A cheap block of 2/3d Wattles, but attractive nonetheless in a block.

A slightly mystifying lot here. Two blocks of six, and three blocks of four OFS 4d stamps. All postmarked field post office No. 16 on June 20th 1900.

I would have thought them CTO for philatelic puposes, but they have no gum, and FPO 16 belonged to the 9th Brigade, who at this time were on the move, going from battle to battle. So I would have thought they had other things than philately uppermost in their mind.

kushti, lovely OFS blocks with your not-so-usual if not scarce cancels.

Just as a matter of interest, recently a single stamp similar to yours but the 2d not the 4d was sold on an online auction site as described below:

OFS 2d overprinted with special type Z1 British Army South African Field Post Office - 17/07/1900 - cancellation superb, very scarce item. Sold for £25,00.

Regardless of value, they are attractive and scarce blocks.

Thanks, Spartacus, I wouldn't like to speculate on value, with cancellations it's more a matter of whether there happens to be a collector who's looking for that particular one. Nice to have them on blocks though, to show the full cancellation, and as the soldiers' letter rate was 1p either locally or to home, other values are less common.

There are a lot of Boer War cancels, there are whole books about them of course. These double circle fpo cancels number from 1-56 (plus 84 and 100 - don't ask, it's complicated) and there are also a couple of dozen base office cancels and so on. Most are fairly common, though there are a few that are very scarce, mostly because their cancellers were captured by the Boers early on in the war and saw only very brief use.
It's possible to pick up small collections of Boer War cancellations pretty cheaply, though to get a complete set would be a major challenge. It's kinda fun hunting them down, though.

Its amazing how this sheet managed to stay intact for so long!
I am also surprised that there are no plate numbers/imprints/sheet numbers on any of the margins.

Tasmania 1892 10/- QV “Tablet”: Likely Unique USED Block 4: Never in 35 years of dealing, have I ever seen a Used Block 4 of this super high value. The beautiful London printed De La Rue Bi-Colour Definitive. Zeehan was a mining boom town on the remote West Coast, and this would have franked a heavy parcel of Silver no doubt.

£2 was a fortune then, in this 1d post First Class Letter era - this was 480 of those stamps - $720 in today’s money. In this period Zeehan was known as “The Silver City”. The ZEEHAN Post Office came into being in 1890. SG 224, £480 as 4 singles, and I’d bet, 100% UNIQUE as a used block. Indeed even MINT bocks of the 2 high values are very rare.

Great eye candy appeal, nicely centred, great perfs, bold deep original unfaded colours, no usual rust spots, and wonderful crisp cds of “ZEEHAN DEC 18 : 00 Tasmania”. This exact printing was on sale state-wide until 1905, so is most certainly an “Australia Commonwealth” stamp. (Stock 716EK)

Show us your postally used block 4, 6 etc

Post by briggia »

I don't know about you but I don't think postally used blocks in many instances can't be bettered IMHO - blocks of stamps as they were intended - used :D

So, show us your postally used blocks from your collection that you love, prize, or simply get a kick out of.

I'll start the ball rolling with a postally used block 6 of the 1959/64 Australian 5s Cattle stamp (SG 327):

Image

Sent from GPO Sydney in 1963 to Port Vila (New Hebrides/Vanuatu) - I know this because this block has been in the custody of the recipient until recently. CV if only 6x used $90 AUD.

Show us your blocks..................

The thread title doesn't exclude covers, so here's a very ordinary block of Great Britain Wilding definitives. The very first stamp issued in 1952, the 2½d red, in a block of 4 - ie 10d.

The postage rate to Switzerland was 4d, and the Express Fee 6d making 10d - they could have used the 10d stamp issued in February 1954, or 2 x 5d issued in July 1953, but 2½d was the letter rate, so that would be most plentiful. The violet postmark only adds to the attraction - Aylesbury 9 April 1954
