Postmarked Kalgoorlie WA on 1st October 2008

1. The State designation of Western Australia was not included in the postmark.
2. The postcode of Kalgoorlie. 6430, was not included in the postmark.
3. The Centenary of 1898 - 2008 is not a Centenary it is 110 years
Colleen Woolley of Oz Pictmarks tells us the postmark was quickly withdrawn when noticed. There was a similar postmark with the same faults for the nearby town of Boulder.

Now I don't have Boulder but as you can see I do have Kalgoorlie, which Colleen has not seen , so you are seeing it first here. :D

I can now add the previously unseen (by me) "Centenary of the Town Hall Boulder WA 6432 (APM #40521)".

As with Kalgoorlie above, the faults were similar:
1. The State designation of Western Australia was not included in the postmark.
2. The postcode of Boulder, 6432, was not included in the postmark.
3. The Centenary of 1898 - 2008 is not a Centenary it is 110 years

30 days have September:

Incorrectly postmarked one month early on 31st September 1990 (a non-existant date) at Campbelltown NSW

I thought this Endeavour Replica postmarking error was on this thread already but I could not see it:
BigSaint wrote:Just found this thread when looking for something else.

A definite error & when the aforementioned Tony Shields heard of it, he had a number of covers postmarked. I think after postmarking, he told the postmaster of the spelling error, & it was withdrawn.
Image
Image
Image
WWW was printed in 1992 & therefore this fdi postmark is not in the book. The status of the online version says major rework for Greensborough. I will have to ask David Wood whether he is aware of "Greenborough". :)
While the postmarking error is Greenborough instead of Greensborough, the date of the postmark 9th February 1995 is correct.

So what happened here :?:

Minlaton South Australia, "Home of the Red Devil" pictorial postmark APM #26960:
Image
Cook Endeavour Replica 45c stamps issued 9th February 1995
Image
Postmarked Minlaton SA on 18th September 1994
Image
Almost 6 months before the date of the Endeavour Replica stamps.
The Red Devil was WWI flying ace Harry Butler's Bristol M1C Monoplane & in 1919 Harry made the first over water flight in the Southern Hemisphere from Adelaide accross St.Vincent's Gulf.

There was no shenanigans with the flight but I think there was with the postmarking, perhaps a few extra covers were produced 6 months down the track by some little red devil.

Colleen Woolley of Oz Pictormarks tells us that Australia Post introduced this butterfly pictorial postmark on 15th June 1983 to compliment a set of 9 butterfly stamps issued on the same day.
Image

And the one below with missing dateline - APM #13611

Aust fdc 1983 - Butterflies 3.jpg
APM #13610 with dateline

Aust fdc 1983 - Butterflies 5.jpg
APM #13611 without dateline.

Colleen advises only a small number were cancelled before this error was discovered.
Dateline was probably not clicked into position properly rather than faulty date line. :)

GB 2013 Christmas 1st Class stamp, with quite spectacular Colour Mis-Registration
GB 2013 Christmas 1st Class stamp, with quite spectacular Colour Mis-Registration

GB 2013 Christmas 1st Class stamp, with quite spectacular Colour Mis-Registration. The most striking error of this type I have seen in any very modern issue. Especially from the GB, De La Rue printings, who these days have VERY sophisticated computer eye quality controls to detect exactly this type of freak. From the one sheet of 50 from De La Rue printers, that was discovered showing this error on some units.

Often a spike of electrical outage causes press to “hiccup” for a millisecond, and registration on the roll of paper is slightly skewed - looks like THREE colours are mis-registered here! Very attractive price as you can see superb MUH - “Christmas On Stamps” is a huge topical, and of course GB is mega popular. (Stock 683KT)

Corryong, Gateway to the Snowy Mountains.

Colleen Woolley of Oz Pictomarks writes that a redesigned (although similar theme) pictorial postmark was released on 27th December 2006 - APM #38180:

Aust fdc 2006 - Corryong Postmark.jpg
Corryong pictorial postmark APM #38180 on Scouting Jamboree pse cancelled 19th December 2006
Aust fdc 2006 - Corryong Postmark 1.jpg
Corryong pictorial postmark APM #38180 on Hume & Hovell pse cancelled 19th December 2006
Aust fdc 2006 - Corryong Postmark 2.jpg
19th December 2006 is 8 days before official release on 27th December 2006.

Colleen makes no mention of early usage of this postmark. :)

150th Anniversary of Charles Sturt's Explorations & Goolwa:

Aust fdc 1980 - PSE Sturt Expedition.jpg
150th Anniversary of Charles Sturt's Explorations pse cancelled with Goolwa cds 12th November 1980 being the fdi
Aust fdc 1980 - PSE Sturt Expedition 1.jpg
150th Anniversary of Charles Sturt's Explorations pse with Sturt's Desert Rose 2c coil stamp added cancelled with Goolwa cds 10th February 1981 (possibly the 150th Anniversary of Sturt's arrival in Goolwa).

On 5th August 2003 Australia Post issued a set of 5 stamps for Murray River Shipping 50c gummed (SG #2311- SG #2315) & Self Adhesive (SG #2316 - SG #2320) & with it were two pictorial fdi postmarks, one for Swan Hill (APM #35520) & the other for Goolwa (APM #35530).

Now someone (I suspect the Allexander Boys of Ballarat - Havilah Enterprises) thought they would create different fdcs by adding these stamps to the Sturt pse, overprinting them & having them postmarked at Goolwa.

Aust fdc 1980 - PSE Sturt Expedition 2.jpg
SG #2320 - Adelaide Paddle Steamer 50c stamp
Aust fdc 1980 - PSE Sturt Expedition 3.jpg
SG #2316 - Oscar W Paddle Steamer 50c stamp
Aust fdc 1980 - PSE Sturt Expedition 4.jpg
SG #2317 - Marion Paddle Steamer 50c stamp
Aust fdc 1980 - PSE Sturt Expedition 5.jpg
SG #2318 - Pyapp Cruise Vessel 50c stamp
Aust fdc 1980 - PSE Sturt Expedition 6.jpg
SG #2319 - Ruby Paddle Steamer 50c stamp.

All would have been good if the Goolwa fdi postmark - 5th August 2003 had not cancelled the stamp section of the pse which had been issued almost 23 years earlier.

With one like this, one can only presume that the 5c coil stamps were inadvertently loaded into the coil vending machine outside the Melbourne GPO prior to the official date of issue:

Aust fdc 1970 - 5c Wattle Coil.jpg
Excelsior fdc for the Floral Emblem coil stamps (5c Golden Wattle) cancelled with Melbourne machine slogan cancel on 24th April 1970 - date of issue 27th April 1970.
Aust fdc 1970 - 4c Sturt Rose & 5c Wattle Coils.jpg
Excelsior fdc for the Floral Emblem 4c Sturt's Desert Rose & 5c Golden Wattle coil stamps correctly cancelled with Morwell Vic fdi postmark 27th April 1970.

Note the colour of this cachet is gold like the one above but the gold embossing has come off like many of these cachets leaving a yellow/green appearance behind.
Aust fdc 1970 - 4c Sturt Rose & 5c Wattle Coils 1.jpg
Excelsior fdc (silver cachet) for the Floral Emblem 4c Sturt's Desert Rose & 5c Golden Wattle coil stamps correctly cancelled with with ANPEX 70 Exhibition postmark in red on fdi - 27th April 1970.

Paralympic Village, Sydney, NSW - 18th to 29th October 2000 - APM #33370:

Aust fdc 2000 - Paralympic Games.jpg
Postmarked 11th October 2000 & 1st November 2000 at Paralympic Village
Aust fdc 2000 - Paralympic Games 1.jpg

Colleen Woolley of Oz Pictormarks tells us this postmarker was designed for use during the Sydney 2000 Paralympic Games from 18th October to 29th October 2000.

Colleen notes that covers have been seen, like the one above, dated 11th October 2000, a week early. Not only does the cover above have early use but also has usage, on 1st November 2000, 3 days after the postmark was withdrawn.

Two errors for the price of one. :)

I hope these show better the error. The blue CYAN typography at top of stamp is missing on a small number of the maximum cards. If you find one, you will make a handsome return.

They can be faked in 5 seconds with a soft eraser. VERY convincing looking.

If offered on ebay etc you can near guarantee they will be forged. :!:

The Holden Australian Open Golf Championship, Adelaide SA 5000 - 3rd to 6th December 1998 - APM #31680.

Colleen Woolley of Oz Pictormarks writes:

This is one of only very few golf themed postmarks ever used in Australia. Colleen has not seen all dates from 3rd December to 6th December but because the postmarker has rolling dateline that all 3 days exist.

As Colleen does not mention any early dates, I can only presume she hasn't seen the ones below either:

Aust FDC 1998 = Holden Aust Open 1.jpg
1994 Hockey World Cup pse cancelled with Holden Australian Open Golf Championship, Adelaide pictorial postmark on 1st November 1998, one month early.
Aust FDC 1998 = Holden Aust Open 2.jpg
Aust FDC 1998 = Holden Aust Open 3.jpg
1988 Australian Bicentennial Exhibition pse cancelled with Holden Australian Open Golf Championship, Adelaide pictorial postmark on 1st November 1998, one month early.
Aust FDC 1998 = Holden Aust Open 4.jpg

If the postmark was 3rd November 1998, then one would think someone put the wrong month but it is the 1st & not the 3rd, I am not sure how this incorrect date could be done. :?

I shown the image 9p Great Britain used stamp. By magnification we can see the Queen's face altered by some other designs.
I don't know the error happened during printing or after that.

With the creases it l@@ks like it's either done 15 rounds with Muhammad Ali or a washing machine.

More likely the washing machine with White King & possibly with some other stamp friends. :D

1982 10c Sierra Leone Aerogramme Error

My collection has a colour shift of 15mm upward of the olive-yellow/brown colours. Creates a ghost-like image of the portrait.

I really don't understand why the kangaroo stamp was not simply added the new Parliament House Darwin pse. :?

I also think it a bit ordinary for the lack of use of capital letters in the postmark - forest hill vic august. What are we trying to teach the children :?:

These are not philatelic errors. They are just people making creative covers (whether legal or not).

Paralympic Village, Sydney, NSW - 18th to 29th October 2000 - APM #33370:

Colleen Woolley of Oz Pictormarks tells us this postmarker was designed for use during the Sydney 2000 Paralympic Games from 18th October to 29th October 2000.

Colleen notes that covers have been seen, like the one above, dated 11th October 2000, a week early. Not only does the cover above have early use but also has usage, on 1st November 2000, 3 days after the postmark was withdrawn.

Two errors for the price of one. :)
I'm not sure about Sydney 2000, but for London 2012 the Paralympic Village had to be fully ready and have all facilities open one week before the Opening Ceremony, and closed three days after, so perhaps it is Ms Woolley that is not fully correct here.

(From the Technical Manual on Paralympic Games, 2012, pdf)

"The Paralympic Village is required to open with full services provided seven (7) days prior to the Opening Ceremony and close three (3) days after the Closing Ceremony, for a total of twenty-two (22) days."

Yes you can't just rely on what Colleen may have stated years ago alone. Like any research, it is continually evolving and updating with new finds or information. Postmarks are known to be used earlier from time to time for legitimate reasons.

Going off the official notice from Australia Post is probably the best starting point. As for "later dates" it also does not mean it is necessarily a genuine "error". For instance, in the past months I have written to a lot of post offices to secure postmarks, and some have given me postmarks that technically they should not have as they are meant to be withdrawn, or in one instance I got a "First Day of Issue" from one post office for a Personalised stamp I made through the Philatelic Bureau!

Technically they should not do that - but it is not an error - it is just lazy or ignorant post masters using old or irrelevant postmarking devices in their possession. So you can't read too much into this.

I was going to let your earlier comment ride & address it later as I am very busy with work at the moment.

However I do not think it is fair to be critical of Colleen's work. The information was supplied to her by Australia Post & she has made a cross reference to that information in her work. It was a mammoth task taking many hours of hard work. It was a labour of love as the selling price was well under the cost of her time to produce.

Now if a postmaster or postal clerk puts the wrong postmark on the wrong stamp on the wrong date, then how can it be anything other than error. The error may have been caused by laziness, stupidity, haste or lack of knowledge but it is still an error. The cause of an error does not stop an error from being an error.

Not critical of Colleen at all - wish there were more Colleens around! Great work, great job. You don't read the context. The point was, research gets updated with time with new information and you can't just rely on older publications alone as up to date facts and by default anything that varies from the old research has to be "an error" just because the older research presented different facts. Need to look at context. Everyone's research is updated with time and new discoveries and evidence. Colleen's work cannot be criticized.

The issue is this is meant to be a forum on philatelic errors. There is a lot here that are not errors (like creating your own creative cover contrary to postal regulations - is not an error - it was intentionally done!). Similarly using a postmark device you are not supposed to is not a "philatelic" error. It is an error in judgement of an individual perhaps you could argue yes.

I think understanding what a true philatelic error is, is the only issue here. I've just cut and paste some stuff in haste which appears to be on the right track:

A postage stamp error is any of several types of failure in the stamp printing process that results in stamps not having the intended appearance. Errors include use of the wrong colors, wrong denominations, missing parts of the design, misplaced or inverted design elements, etc. The term "error" is typically reserved for failures in the production process that (potentially) replicate over many stamps, while unique errors or poor quality are known as "freaks" or "oddities". Printing plate flaws, such as cracks, wear, or even constant flaws, and plate repairs, such as re-entries, are also not considered errors.

This would also apply to postal stationery, FDC etc.

2003 Canada Year of the Ram - MISSING GOLD FOIL ERROR

Canada has some really nice errors. This one in my collection is a bit different to the norm in that it is the gold foil that shifted in the production process, resulting in the left stamps missing the gold 100%, the second stamps partly missing gold. Approx. 350 in total known from a few sheets.
