Day 4 of Australia 99 was Monday 22nd March 1999 & was Olympics day. All post offices were open throughout Australia & the Olympic Torch issue was the last new issue of the show. So life should have been easier for the overworked postal clerks:

National fdi Melbourne cancel:
Image
Pictorial cancel of the MCG one of the venues where the 1956 Melbourne Olympics were held:
Image
Olympics day cancel signed by Ron Clarke who is pictured on the fdc carrying the 1956 Torch. I understand he suffered burns to hand from carrying that torch.
Image
So all is good 3 correct cancels.

I went to Bentleigh to collect the covers I had arranged to be done for me. It was too good to last:
Image
Oops 3 days early. I commented how nice the cover was & asked for a couple more to be done this time with correct date.

It wasn't just Bentleigh. I had a friend in Sydney who went to Post Offices around Homebush, one of the venues for the 2000 Sydney Olympics. At Homebush South he received this one:

Again 3 days early, but also managed to have the correct date done:

The University Of Sydney introduced a new pictorial postmark on 8th June 1999, the same day the 100 Years of Test Rugby were released. Perhaps they should have reserved it for those fdcs rather than putting on a pse for the 150th Anniversary Of Sydney which was issued in 1992.

Speaking of the 100th Anniversary of Test Rugby here is a correct one signed by David Campese, a former Australian Test Rugby player.

Now 30 days have September, April, June & November, all the rest have 31, except February which has 28 & 29 in a leap year. Apparently not if you live in Bentleigh,

These ones from the set of Botanic Garden PSEs are correctly postmarked on the first day of issue, 12th February 1998:

However I cannot workout why this one was postmarked by Bentleigh fdi 2 weeks later:

All the pses in the set were wrongly postmarked by Bentleigh.

Hi, Thought I would share these covers I have. Probably not rare but interesting all the same.

First one is the 1992 Emperor Penguin on commercially used cover to England paired with a "SPECIMEN" overprinted copy.

The second is the 1972 Primary Industry FDC with a extra copy of the 30c fish stamp.

A new innovation this stamp with the hologram, depending on how you look at it the date will either be 1999 or 2000. The one below is correctly postmarked fdi on 1st November 1999:

However this unbranded Alpha Souvenir cover has had this stamp postmarked on 1st January 2000 at Mornington, 2 months after the date of issue:

There have been many over the years who have said someone should cut the ropes that stop Tasmania drifting away from the mainland. It would seem that Australia post did exactly that with the 49c Paralympic shotputter :!:
Image
Tasmania is missing from the green stamp in the top left of the block of 9 on the above fdc.
Image
Or when turned the right the bottom left corner on the unbranded Alpha fdc above.
Image
It is always the green stamp on the left edge of the left pane (ie 3 down from the top or the middle one).

Hopefully this one makes it easier to see.

Ford Australia is the Australian subsidiary of Ford Motor Company which is an American company and was founded in Geelong, Victoria, in 1925

So this machine slogan cancel was introduced in 2000 & is still going strong in 2014 now that Ford has been in Australia for 89 years. Perhaps the postmark is going stronger than Ford these days!

Brad :)

Ford announced massive job cuts in Victoria at about the time of this cover, so I imagine that the very late use of the Ford slogan by "mistake" was perhaps an act of solidarity by the worker(s) responsible at the mail centre.

Did Australia Post ever state that white test paper was not valid for postal usage? The postage has been paid for, as indicated by the value imprinted on the blank paper by the Frama machine.

I could agree it is not classed a "stamp" (perhaps classed as a 'label'?) , but surely it is as valid for postage, just as any meter impression was!

If it wasn't for the missing dateline on that postmark, stamps would have been soaked off for sure.

Some Australia Post fdcs for the Centenary of Federation issued on 1st January 2001. Some post offices in the Capital Cities were open for a few hours for postmarking, on that New Year's Day, & if remember correctly the queue was out of the door at the Melbourne GPO:

On 1st January 2001, some selected post offices were open to postmark "Centenary of Federation stamps & covers" with the special pictorial fdi postmark. I do find it a little puzzling how this stamp was cancelled with that special postmark by Canberra nearly 21 months after the stamps issue.

This illustrated Air NZ cover is also a very common type and they were sent on all first flights in '65 and '66.

All I have seen, except the top one shown above, have the words 'the five star jetline' and the stars below in teal not white.

But they also managed to postmark it 4 days early too:

It would seem that the issues for 100 years of Army Service & 50 years of the Formation of the Women's Royal Australian Army Corps which were both issued on 15th Fbruary 2001 caused some confusion here.
