I have one of these too:
Image
What we think happened here was that Aust Post changed the date of issue. However before they notified Wesley & Royal, some blanks had been sent to "standing order" customers. Stocks still on hand were overprinted with the amended date:
Image
Or were just typed over by the customer:
Image
This happened a few times around this period & we believe that both Wesley & Royal printed the cachets without dates & added the dates later when the issue date was confirmed. This is why sometimes you will see their cachets without dates.

The same also applied to Royal fdcs.

With the 1960 Melbourne Cup we believe there were two date printings, the first done in the colour of the horse starting directly below the Royal logo & the second in black placed slightly to the left under Royal logo.

Brad,

Thanks for those - a wonderful case of picture working so well to show the variations.

I had not noticed the 2 printings on the Royal, so your Information is much appreciated.

BTW - I am quite keen on WCS and Royal of the early 1960s because of this type of variation: without date, with date; and also the changed / altered issue dates (as for the Anteater).

Thanks very much Brad.

That thread has lots of First Day Cover information - about Wesley Cover Services (WCS), and the Australian Cover Collectors Association (ACCA) and McCallum's Printers "Parade" covers, plus a lot more.

I especially enjoyed the huge number of WCS covers used for the Territories - for Cocos and Christmas Islands, plus the extensive coverage of Norfolk Island FDCs. Fantastic.

There used to be an everyday pictorial postmark at Moonee Ponds, for the W S Cox Plate, it was introduced for the 1993 Spring Carnival.
Image
But some boffin at Australia Post H Q, with the initials T.M., decided because it did not say "Home of the Cox Plate" it could only be used on Cox Plate Day. From memory they decided this in 2002 in the Year of the Horse when stamps were issued for Sunline, Manikato, Wakeful, Rising Fast & Might And Power. I can recall becoming rather annoyed when I went out to Moonee Ponds & they refused to postmark my fdcs.

Anyhow I digress. Because the Flemington Post Office is normally closed on Melbourne Cup day, I usually go out to Flemington the day before to have my annual Melbourne Cup covers postmarked with the "Home of the Melbourne Cup" pictorial postmark.

There are new staff & a new manager there now due to a couple of happenings that may have been in the local paper (but Mum's the word). The new staff & manager have come from, guess where, initials M. P.

So on Monday the Manager, Baabaabaarra, said she could only postmark my covers on Melbourne Cup day & she couldn't give me the covers back until Wednesday because that would be wrong & I could sell them on ebay. To postmark them on any other day other than Melbourne Cup Day (when the Post Office is closed), would be wrong & I could sell them for "big bucks" on ebay. She said she had mail orders for other days like Oaks day but because she didn't have an Oaks Day postmark they couldn't be done & she had postmarked all requests on date of Cup day, when the office was closed & would send them out on Wednesday. So she said come back Wednesday & she would postmark my covers. I said I had come from the other side of town & wouldn't be back till Thursday & she agreed to postmark my covers then. I told her this was most unusual I had been postmarking covers on days other than Melbourne Cup Day for nearly 30 years & explained the difference between Flemington & Moonee Ponds (which I don't agree with). She then decided she would confirm this with the Philatelic Bureau before I returned today. She then went on to make some more extraordinary statements which I prefer not to put here as someone might sell them on ebay for big bucks!

Guess what when I went in there today, Baabaabaarra said I was right. The Philatelic Bureau told here she could postmark any day, except a future date. So here is the result signed by 2015 Melbourne Cup winning trainer Darren Weir:
Image

So isn't wrong to postmark a cover on a date where that post office was not open. Perhaps I could now sell this for "big bucks" on ebay :!: Sssshh don't Baabaabaarra, & end of rant.

But it would appear that when the year was changed over for 2016, on the pictorial "Waterwheel" machine cancel at Tatura, not only did someone roll the date back to 2014 they also managed to invert the date line.

And 8 days into the New Year & no one has picked this up & fixed it.

A design error exists with the new Australian Stamp to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the change to decimal currency:
Image

The stamp shows a $1 coin, a $1 note & a £1 note. £1 = $2 or 20/-. The stamp then should have shown a $1 note, $1 coin & a 10/- note.

You have an eagle eye Brad, I didn't realise that; I remember the changeover of our currency from pre-decimal to decimal 50 years ago today; I should have known.

An error for sure, thanks for pointing it out.

I might be a little pedantic here, the pre-decimal currency was still officially in use from January 1 - February 13, 1966 when 1966 was still pre-decimal.

What the stamp represents is the change-over since February 14, 1966, not January 1 - February 13, 1966. So adding the pre-decimal note is correct, though the £1 banknote isn't the correct note as Brad previously pointed out.

A recent trip to Castlemaine saw me receive this postmark (when I wanted the gold mining postmark - which was out of dateline). I thought it looked pretty flash. However this postmark was withdrawn at the closure of the event on 7th December 2007. Below is Colleen Woolley's write-up from Oz Pictormarks:

1948 NZ Health FDCs.

According to the Stephen Jones' book on NZ pre-decimal health FDCs, this cover exists in predominantly three colours;
namely, pinkish purple, brown and orange brown.
Therefore the covers you show are quite normal for that issue.

The answer of course is "B" 3rd December 1979, so the Sydney Philatelic Sales Centre make a bad date error while it is possible someone came back to Eureka the next year but somehow I don't think so.

Here is one I picked up on Delcampe, an interesting one, as not only is it the "home post office" of the Brighton Philatelic Society, it had an unusual postmark for a time:
Image
Above is our WCS fdc for the 1960 Melbourne Cup & below is a fdc for Ferdinand Von Mueller from 1948, with the "reversed 'N' postmark" :!:
Image
PPA describes the canceller was incorrectly made as "Morth" instead of "North". As these metal cancellers took a long time to make, the first stroke down of the "M" was removed giving the appearance of a reversed "N".

It is ok to add the Sir Donald Bradman, Living Legend stamps to the pse, but the "stamp" section of the pse should not have been cancelled with the Don Bradman Bowral fdi postmark of 23rd January 1997 over 17 years after issue.

As stated above this pse for the Fourth World Bowling Championships at Frankston which ran from 16th January 1980 till 2nd February 1980 was issued on 16th January 1980:

It is ok to add the 1999 Rugby World Cups stamps to the pse, but the "stamp" section of the pse should not have been cancelled with the Rugby World Cup fdi postmark of 8th November 1999 over 19 years after issue:

Up & till the 30th September 1988, you were able to request a postmark provided there was a valid postage stamp of any denomination & many used stamps for this purpose with values as little 1c or 2c. This changed from this day with postmark requests requiring at least the minimum basic postage rate without which an item could not be postmarked.
Image
In this instance we have two extra postmarks without stamps which should have had at least 2 x 1c stamps affixed.

It is interesting to note that the South Brisbane EXPO '88 postmark, although described in Oz Pictormarks, I can't actually see it illustrated. It was used for the duration of the show (30th April 1988 to 31st October 1988). I also can find no reference to the rubber stamp cachet "World Expo 88 Sports Sciences Week 3 - 8 July".

Australian Wildlife fdc correctly postmarked on 13th August 1986:
Image
It would appear that someone did not change the date at Alpha as this was the fdi date of the Horses of Australia issue (although there were a lot of new issues in between):
Image
This one is correctly postmarked at Bentleigh, someone did tell me there was reason for doing this but I cannot recall it at the moment:

From WAPEX '72:

Only about 4 years too late for the usage of this 1954 Black Swan. Last day of usage for pre-decimal stamps was 14th February 1968.
