Pre-decimal Cocos Keeling Islands are not valid and 5/s was enough for a small registered airmail cover to USA in 1963.

Not sure how the staff of the GPO Brisbane could overlook this.

Dan

Great cover you show there but I don't believe you are correct, I have seen plenty of Cocos stamps used in Australia from 1963 to the start of decimal currency & not been taxed. I have copied something from the link below here:
https://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=4081
fromdownunder wrote:Kev, I split this topic off, because it is interesting in it's own right. I will state what I think I know, and others will come along to correct me, and we all get to learn something :D

Lets look at the Biggest Picture - all current and former Australian Territories:

AAT - all stamps valid in Australia
Cocos (Keeling) Islands - valid in Australia 1963-1967, 1992 onwards
Christmas Island - valid in Australia 1992 onwards.
Nauru - Never valid
Norfolk Island - Never Valid
Papua & New Guinea - Never Valid

I think the major question is why were Cocos (Keeling) Islands stamps valid in Australia from 1963 to 1967? That is the one I would like answered personally, as that appears to be the single anomaly in this whole affair.

100% valid nationally (or for all foreign mail of course) from Day #1 in 1963 to Feb 13, 1968 when we went decimal and had a 2 year grace period to use Sterling franking, AND they were on sale nationally at all Philatelic Sales Centres too.

Seven Seas Stamps in Dubbo used them on near all mail. Endless covers with them exist, and ''millions'' of used copies with Dubbo postmarks exist. 8)

But agree no way was a small letter to USA costing 8/-. Standard Air Post was 2/- as I recall, and Reg'd was maybe 6d back then. MAYBE triple weight, but for tiny letter size, hard to imagine.

For those of you who follow my JFK (Scott 1246) fdc thread, you will know this stamp was issued on the 29th May 1964. If you haven't the link is below:
https://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=41842
Image
Atlanta, Georgia
Image
Postmarked 26th May 1964, 3 days early.

Image
The double strike does make it difficult to read that early May 26th, 1964 cancel, with the "Y" of May in the second cancel filling in the loop of the "6" in 26.

Not sure why the postal clerk ran it through the machine again after he discovered he had forgotten to change the date.

Got this one around 20 years ago. From a Len Jury auction I think. Isn't a first day cover (5th July), but is most likely closest I will ever get to owning one. Back then, I figured I'd better get one before prices go too far out of my reach.

The very rare double overprint on cover is supplied with an RPS Victoria (Royal Philatelic Society) certificate. Two sheets of the 3d was issued with double overprint. The second impression is weaker than the first, and is 1mm to the left, and slightly higher than the first overprint.

Examples of a similar, but a closer double overprint (from another sheet)have been used on cover cancelled at 'No. 8 Aust. Base P.O. -7 Nov 1947', shown below. This cover is one of only two existing.

Added this to stock this week (Stock 592JA) - pretty cool stamp error!
Image
Australia 1976 18¢ Nationhood Anniversary *MISSING GOLD*: Fresh MUH single, with all the gold printing missing. As can be seen, the error results in the loss of heavy rope line cordon under the star, the Gold on the central star, and all the state Coat Of Arms from the Shield, and all the Wattle flowers! SUPER Scarce - only a few dozen ever found, and in 40 years of dealing have never owned one. Today’s price is nuts - should be easily double this, as almost never offered.

Fresh Mint Unhinged. From the famous award winning Commonwealth Missing Colour collection of Tom Pierron/Richard Monteiro. This stamp was printed in 4 colours - Stone, Gold, Yellow Ochre and Deep Violet. SG 614b £350=$A700, but SG oddly mix up the Dies compared to ACSC, and this might very well be SG 614cb £1,300 = $A2,500 - very confusing. This lot is of both stamps you see here - the error, and MUH copy of the normal stamp. $A500 (Stock 592JA)

If a letter was 7c in 1973 and only 1c was paid it was short 6c so double deficiency was 12c not 10c.

Added this cool Olympic stamp error piece to stock - :D
Image

Samoa Olympic Games Miniature Sheet *IMPERFORATE AT SIDE*! 1988 Seoul Olympic Games stamps, with the spectacular error on right hand side - totally imperforate on right. Believed to be the ONLY example recorded - I have made extensive enquiries, and no others seem to be recorded. Purchased off Max Stern in the 1980s my client’s note says, for $400, and it was apparently found in Max’s New Issue stock. So that is over $1,200 in today’s adjusted money, near 30 years on. TOTALLY imperf - not even an ‘albino’ type impression of the perf pins, as often occurs on these kind of errors.

Superb piece for any collector of the popular “Olympics On Stamps” topical, which is a major theme globally. Or for collectors of Samoa, which lots of Australians keep, as Australia Post sold their New Issues for decades, nationally, at face value. Very few issues in the modern era have Imperf at side errors, due to security printer controls. There are several from Australia in this era which sell for FIVE times this sum. The 24c ‘Tasmania Tiger’ Thylacine, ACSC 902b from Australia in this era, imperf 1 side, sells for $1,000s a single etc. $A200 (Stock 582LX)

Now, I know what you are thinking ....
Image
British, 80's, hand addressed, corner / condition issues, "dull as ditchwater" ... (basically "landfill").

I was trimming a pile of similar this evening, to extract stamp sets
(they are easier to move on as "VFU sets, x 50").

Then I noticed the date
Image
Which, in itself looks quite ordinary unless you know that...
SG 1147 - 50 International Year of the Disabled, was officially issued on 25th March 1981.

O.K., its only a date slug error, but its a curiosity, and that moves it out of the trimmable pile, for me. :D

Excellent pickup ViccyVFU.

One wonders how a large post office would make an error like that 3 months into the year. January is understandable but March when surely it would have been used for other stamp issues earlier in 1981.

Centenary of the Town Hall Kalgoorlie WA 6430 (APM #40520) used from 1st September 2008 to 31st December (or was meant to be) but for the following errors which were not noticed during the design stage:
Image
Postmarked Kalgoorlie WA on 1st October 2008

Image

1. The State designation of Western Australia was not included in the postmark.
2. The postcode of Kalgoorlie. 6430, was not included in the postmark.
3. The Centenary of 1898 - 2008 is not a Centenary it is 110 years
Colleen Woolley of Oz Pictmarks tells us the postmark was quickly withdrawn when noticed. There was a similar postmark with the same faults for the nearby town of Boulder.

Now I don't have Boulder but as you can see I do have Kalgoorlie, which Colleen has not seen , so you are seeing it first here. :D

Colleen Woolley at least knew about my previous error even though she had not seen it. This one she makes no mention of at all. She mention 182 cancels were done presumably at the Glebe Post Office & has not counted the 100,000 or so first day covers churned out at Sprintpak in Rowville.
Image
WCS Centenary of Rugby League - National First Day of Issue pictorial postmark featuring a Rugby footballer.
Image
Now someone has written that the 24th March 2008 was Easter Monday & the Post Office was not open on that day & that is right. But worse than that is the 24th March 2008 was not the first day of issue, it was the 25th March 2008 & illustrated below.
Image
WCS fdc for Centenary of Rugby League correctly dated 25th March 2008.

APM #40050 - 25th March 2008

I can only guess the hand held fixed date National FDI postmark was sent to Glebe Post Office where they did not notice the incorrect date & proceeded to postmark 182 items totally oblivious that the date was incorrect.

On 4th January 2000, the historic town of Port Wakefield SA 5550, about 100 kms north of Adelaide received a pictorial postmark featuring the town's logo of an historic sailing ship:
Image
APM #32650 size 38mm
Image

On 9th October 2006 this postmark was replaced by a smaller version(s) 34mm x 33mm. Colleen Woolley of OZ Pictormarks tells us there were two different datelines, one with a bar in front of the 9 (APM #38011) & one without (APM #38010). Personally I think this just a different positioning of the first wheel of the date line which are "a blank", -, 0, 1, 2, & 3." But that is just by the by.

And then there is this one dated 11 days early - 29th September 2006 which Colleen records :
Image
APM #38010 or #38011 - we can't tell because the 2 in the 1st position.

Colleen reports 60 cancels on fdu but no one knows how many were done on 29th September 2006.

Meningie, South Australia - new pictorial postmark 28th September 2008:
Image
Meningie, South Australia APM#40750 postmarked 26th September 2008
Image
Two days before issue of new pictorial postmark APM#40750 size 30mm.
Colleen Woolley writes in Oz Pictormarks that this postmark was not advertised in the Philatelic Bulletin. It was a re-issue of APM#36870 which was similar except the date was blocked & size was 33mm x 32mm which was possibly damaged or lost.

This in turn had replaced APM#28950, similar design again but size 32mm. Perhaps it had also been lost or damaged. :)

1993 World Heritage Sites of Australia (SG #1392-1395) issued 4th March 1993
postmarked with APM#25260, a stylised Emu Canberra ACT 2600.
A set of World Heritage Sites of Australia PSEs were also issued on that day & someone thought it was a good idea to change the postcode from 2600 to 2601:
Image
Shark Bay, WA issued 4th March 1993 postmarked with APM#25261, a stylised Emu Canberra ACT 2061
Image

Image
Kakadu, NT issued 4th March 1993 postmarked with APM#25261, a stylised Emu Canberra ACT 2061
Image

Image
Fraser Island, Qld issued 4th March 1993 postmarked with APM#25261, a stylised Emu Canberra ACT 2061
Image

Image
Uluru, NT issued 4th March 1993 postmarked with APM#25261, a stylised Emu Canberra ACT 2061
Image

As you can see instead of postcode being 2601, some maroon incorrectly put 2061 by reversing the 6 & the 0.
Incidentally postcode 2061 is Milson's Point & Kirribilli on the north side of Sydney Harbour near the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

BigSaint wrote:This cover has 3 Emu Frama's, which were issued on 2nd January 1992, that have been overprinted "Family '94". I have not seen this overprint on a Frama label before. I note that on 14th April 1994 that special postmarks & 3 new stamps were issued for the International Year of the Family. Australian Pictormarks refers to these but there is no reference to the overprinted frama.
Image
Leaving aside that the Emu Frama was issued on 2nd January 1992, & that the overprinted Family '94 may have been released on 14th April 1994, how do we explain how these framas were cancelled with a fdi postmarker for the 50th Anniversary of Victory in Europe & another fdi postmarker that was to be used for the Weary Dunlop PNC cover (the 2nd PNC cover released) that was released on the same day (20th April 1995). The Shrine of Remembrance pictorial postmark which was first used on this day was the only postmark correctly applied on this cover :!:

Brad :)
I bring back this cover to show the "Shrine Of Remembrance" postmark introduced on 20th April 1995, a close up for you:
Image
APM #27860
On 30th October 2008 this postmarker was replaced, whether it was
"mislaid, lost, stolen or strayed"
is not clear, perhaps it was simply broken, but the replacement postmarker lasted even less time:

As you can see the "Remembrance" is spelled "Remembrancf, the last letter being an "F" & not an "E". Colleen Woolley of Oz Pictormarks says it was replaced immemdiately, immediately after someone had found theme related pre-stamped envelopes to cancel with the incorrectly spelled pictorial postmark it would seem. In their excitement to obtain examples they over inked the stamp pad slightly, losing the definition of the leaves:
Image
Image
Image Image
"SHRINE OF REMEMBRANCF - APM #40751
Although Colleen illustrates the correctly spelled postmark on this date & numbers it as APM #40750, I have not seen it on this date. :)

I wonder if a cover exists with APM #40750 & APM #40751, bet it does. Something more to look for. :)

Another example not quite so over inked:
Image
I note Colleen prices APM #40750 at $2.50 & APM #40751 (the error) at $30. Perhaps the correct one on fdu should attract a premium rather than the error.

Haymarket, NSW - Year of the Snake pictorial postmark used from 8th January 2001 to 7th January 2002:
Image
Unbranded Alpha souvenir cover produced by Havilah Enterprises (aka the Alexander Boys
from Ballarat) postmarked 7th January 2001 one day early.
Image
Oz Pictormarks - APM #33560
Colleen Woolley of Oz Pictormarks makes no reference to any early postmarking, she does however describe that there were two of these postmarks with different datelines.

APM #33560 shown above & confirmed as being used at the Haymarket NSW Post Office & APM#33561 with a slightly different dateline used at the National Philatelic Bureau.

At this time Havilah Enterprises was the largest customer of the Philatelic Bureau. Not only did they submit large orders with the Philatelic Bureau they also personally visited many of the post offices like in this case. They would have taken several hundred covers to Haymarket as well as another batch to Cabramatta. Another member of the family would have been doing the same at the China Town post office in Melbourne.

They would have taken some for last day of use of the "Year of the Dragon" & the rest for the first day of the "Year of the Snake". To add to it there would have been last day & first day combo covers as well as the post office cds. No doubt with the volume of covers involved, someone became confused somewhere & the wrong postmark was applied to the wrong cover. It is understandable how this error may have been made.

Colleen did report that 200 first day cancels were done of this postmark at Haymarket.

Then back to Ballarat to design & print the cachet. :)

Tour Down Under - International World Class Cycling Event - 18th - 23rd January 2000.

Colleen Woolley, Oz Pictormarks tells us that the "Tour Down Under" is a cycling race in & around Adelaide SA, starting on the 3rd Tuesday of January each year. The winner in 2000 was Gilles Maignan of France. Officially there were 6 postmarks for the event but there ended up being 7. :D

Colleen's postmark numbers are all over the place for this event & I am not sure why. :?
Image
Stage 2 Tour Down Under - 19th January 2000 - North Adelaide SA 5000
on unbranded Alpha Souvenir cover.
Image
Incorrect North Adelaide postcode 5000 should be 5006 - APM #32721 :?:
Colleen records this error in Oz Pictmarks but hasn't given it a number. I think is a typo & I think it's number will be APM #32721. It is not known how many examples exist.

The error was corrected & Colleen assigned number APM #32720 to that one. :)

Greetings from Perú
Thank you aladeral. Very nice.

But you needed to explain the missing perforations for the left hand stamps on the mini-sheet & details about the issue so it could be picked up by the Googlebots.

Now most of us will know decimal currency came to this country on 14th February 1966 & some will know the Queen Elizabeth 7c Purple (SG #388a) was issued on 1st October 1971:
Image
Queen Elizabeth 7c Purple (SG #388a) postmarked Thornside Qld, 13th September 1962

Probably meant to be 1972.

But very few will know how this date error occurred.

Well I thought here is a nice last day cover, given to me by Stampboarder towradji, & a lucky date too, 8th August 1988 or 8/8/88, all 8's.

Oz Pictormarks says it was replaced on by the Hughenden Dinosaurs on 1st August 1988:

Muttaburrasaurus & Hughenden Sauropod on 1st August 1988 fdu.
Hughenden is 376 kms west of Townsville & 1,400 kms north west of Brisbane.

Hughendon has replica of the Muttaburrasaurus discovered in 1963, 220 kms away by road near Muttaburra & has an annual Dinosaur Festival.

PPA tells us the post office opened as an RO circa 1874 & became a PO 1/7/1878.
