Falkland Islands
June 14, 2012

30th Anniversary of liberation.

Argentina invaded the Falkland Islands (Islas Malvinas) on April 2, 1982.
Their claim that they were rightly taking back their own territory was supported by most countries in Latin America, although only Peru provided aircraft and missiles to Argentina. Most of Europe took Britain's side. Chile broke with its South American neighbors by allowing the Brits to use its harbors and airports to stage a military response to the invasion. The U.S. hemmed and hawed for a while, said it was neutral, and then finally sided with the Brits.

There were a few naval battles and air skirmishes. On May 21 British forces landed on one of the islands and began a land campaign. The Argentine forces surrendered June 14, 1982.

Death toll:
3 Falkland civilians
255 British troops
649 Argentine troops

New Zealand 1987, special penguin postmark on Life Insurance Dept cover: the first day of the National Stamp Exhibition at Dunedin.

Not a penguin on a stamp this time, but on the postmark!

Dunedin (= "Edinburgh of the South", a city settled by Scottish refugees) has penguins living along its coast, so the penguin managed to sneak its way on to the postmark for the first day of the Exhibition. :)

Different pictures were used for the postmark the other two days.

Classic Stamps Ltd of New Zealand advertised by picturing more penguins in booklets of stamps at the then postage letter rate of 40 cents in 2002.
The Postage rate has more than doubled over the next 16 years.

The Galápagos penguin (Spheniscus mendiculus) is endemic to the Galápagos Islands. It is the only penguin found in the wild on or north of the equator.
It is the rarest of penguin species. Once numerous, the species is severely endangered, with perhaps 1,000 pairs surviving in the wild.

Birds of Africa, African Penguin
Spheniscus demersus, also known as the jackass penguin and black-footed penguin

The African penguin is only found on the south-western coast of Africa, living in colonies on 24 islands between Namibia and South Africa. It is the only penguin species that breeds in Africa.

The African penguin is classified as Endangered because it is undergoing a very rapid population decline, probably as a result of commercial fisheries and shifts in prey populations. This trend currently shows no sign of reversing. Population estimated at 50,000 individuals in 2015, down from roughly 4 million penguins at the beginning of the 19th century, 200,000 in 2000.

Ocean Park is a 226 acre marine mammal park, oceanarium, animal theme park and amusement park in the Southern District of Hong Kong.

Ocean Park is operated as a not-for-profit organization aiming to merge entertainment and education, including conservation advocacy. Ocean Park was officially opened in January 1977 and has had several large rounds of upgrade over the years since. Its initial construction and second phase of development was funded by the Hong Kong Jockey Club with land provided free by the Hong Kong Government.

King penguins, southern rockhopper penguins and gentoo penguins are now housed and displayed in their "Polar Adventure" feature which opened in 2012.

Once the name "KOOL" was selected, the advertising agency of Batten, Barton, Durstine and Osborn, Inc. developed an advertising campaign centered around the image of penguins. Apparently, seals and walruses were also considered.

New Zealand 2007 penguin on a cal stamp.

This "personalised stamp" (or "cals" as they are known in NZ), was produced by the NZ Post at the request of a photographer, John Lamb, to promote his photography business, and features one of his close-up photos of a penguin. Issue date was 21st November 2007.

Cals have full postal validity, even today, and this one has been used on a letter.

For more details about NZ cals, please see the NZ Post website, where you can order your own, no matter where in the planet you live! . ..

Added this famous Penguin stamp into stock today. (294WX) The 1946 Tristan Da Cunha "4 Potatoes" legendary local stamp created by entrepreneurial local resident, Allan B. Crawford.

A fresh well centred marginal MUH strip of 3 from the lower RH corner of the sheet which all had straight edges along the base.

Pretty rare beasts, especially in bright MUH. Not sure whether to offer as singles, or in strip 3 to save some work!

New Zealand 1990 penguin plus Mawson, Shackleton, the good ship Nimrod, & the first Antarctic stamp.

This "cinderella" minisheet was released at the NZ 1990 World Stamp Exhibition, a fantastic stamp show in Auckland.

I have been unable to find out who published it, but it was certainly not the NZ Post Office. And I didn't see it on sale at the exhibition, but then again, I was mainly occupied looking at the great exhibits.

Does anyone else know more?
