GB Illustrated Special Event Covers & Postmarks

Post by GBCC »

Dear All,

I have for some years been a collector of Great Britain Illustrated Event Covers with or without a Special Event Handstamp Postmark applied and also plain covers with a Special Event Handstamp applied.
Overtime I wondered how many illustrated Covers had been produced for a specific handstamp and conversely did every postmark have an illustrated cover?
On researching for answers to the above I established that unlike First Day Covers there were no sites that could provide the answers.
I have therefore created GB Cover Collector which is reached at www.gbcovercollector.co.uk to be a reference site for GB Illustrated Event Covers and Plain Event covers.
The site will also cover GB General and Local Publicity Slogans on full covers/envelopes.
Currently I have uploaded just over 700 Illustrated Event images and I am currently scanning and uploading plain event covers with their postmarks.
To increase the size of the reference data base I would appreciate if like minded collectors could send me scans of at this time of GB illustrated Event Covers that cannot be found on the site.
These can be e mailed to info@gbcovercollector.co.uk or posted on this topic.
Any other views and comments will always be appreciated.
I will use this forum to keep all updated as to the sites progress

There are quite a few here:

I'm sure if you asked nicely, Debbie & Roy (owners of the website) would let you use some images.
Always on the lookout for Australian pre decimal First Day Covers.

Debbie and Roy already have let images be used for the postmark database as long as the pictures are acknowledged as being "Courtesy of BuckaCover"

Additional background for the benefit of those who don't know how our system in the UK works.

First day postmarks are produced by the Post Office and later Royal Mail for new stamp issues. But anybody or any organisation can ask Royal Mail to produce a postmark to their design - subject to certain rules about content, caption and size. There is a fee for this, around £220, and this fee is for either a one-day handstamp or for a changeable-date handstamp for up to 6 months. A slightly higher fee applies for a 12-month handstamp.

Although the sponsor pays for the production of the postmark, they are all available for anybody to use on and ordinary mail or special illustrated or plain covers. The items to be postmarked must be sent to one of 6 special handstamp centres, and we usually supply a return envelope so that they can be returned pristine. Most handstamps are applied in black, although the sponsor can pay for coloured ink which is usually applied only to the sponsor's covers.

Although in the early days of special postmarks a posting box was provided for visitors (eg to Wimbledon, or the Ideal Home Exhibition) to obtain a souvenir by posting their own envelopes, this is rare these days and most special postmarks are sponsored to accompany a cover-producer's special covers. However, the rule that the postmark is available for anybody means that not only do the postmarks exist on plain covers, but also that illustrated covers can be produced by anybody.

As an example, this is a cover we produced for the Maiden Transatlantic Crossing Westbound of the Queen Mary 2, from Southampton on 16 April 2004. Only 10 covers were produced of this design with this postmark. (Other covers with almost the same design were used for the FDC of the stamp and other voyages.)

Norvic,

Thank you for the explanation added to the thread.
Any covers you you feel you could scan to me to add to the data base?
Any objections if I add a link on my site to yours? I would ask if you could do the same but if I am correct you don't have a links page

Only if they issue a stamp/sheet. As I indicated above, most handstamps are paid for by dealers and organisations.

Geoff
Your site seems to be coming on well and a very interesting topic, but I am a bit confused as to why you started a new thread, I believe the other thread http://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=45789&hilit=gb+illustrated is still live.

Sorry if there is a good reason for this but it just confuses me and others as to where to post to, I personally felt the other thread was doing ok with 44 posts to it.

regards
Mick

could I suggest these threads are merged?

Mick,

Thanks for your posting and sorry to confuse all.
With hindsight I should not have created this thread and then to compound matters then update it last night.
I am relatively new to bulletin board postings as am using them to share my area of collecting and the site and added this thread to the Nice looking stamps and Covers board to ensure I spread the word as far as possible.

viewtopic.php?f=13&t=45789&hilit=gb+illustrated is still live and will be the board I will in future post all updates etc on.

Mick thanks for raising the point and Noel thanks for the scan, will be uploaded on to the site later today
