Chinese Fable - "Now Three, Now Four":

The following stamp issued by the Republic of China in 2001 depicting a scene from the Chinese fable “"Now Three, Now Four". SB member dzuho sent me the story behind this stamp:

Once upon a time, there is an old man who has a group of monkey and takes care of them daily. He has such a close relationship with the monkeys that he knows exactly what the monkeys want and the monkeys understand his words as well. Unfortunately, his fortunate has turned to the worse and he has less and less food for the monkeys. One day he decided that he must cut back on the food to the monkey in order to be able to continue to look after them. He's afraid that the monkeys would be mad at reducing the food so he came up with a track. He said to the monkey initially: "How about 3 nuts in the morning and 4 at night?" The monkeys got all upset. He then said: "OK, OK, How about 4 in the morning and 3 at night?" The monkeys are all happy thinking they get more nuts overall. It's a story referring to people who change their minds frequently without proper considerations.

Many thanks to dzuho :) :) :)

Monkey Orchid

To commemorate the relationship with Ecuador, Israel issued on December 16, 2014 a single stamp depicting Bee orchid (Ophrys fuciflora), represents Israel, and Monkey orchid (Dracula simia), represents Ecuador:

Image

The monkey orchid scientific name, Dracula simia, means "Dracula monkey", since its flower resembles monkey face with Dracula fangs. IMO, the flower resembles to a Golden Lion Tamarin South American monkey. Here is a stamp issued in GB depicting close-up of Tamarin face. what do you think?

The Three Wise Monkeys

The three wise monkeys embody the proverbial principle to "see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil". The three monkeys are Mizaru, covering his eyes, who sees no evil; Kikazaru, covering his ears, who hears no evil; and Iwazaru, covering his mouth, who speaks no evil.

There are various meanings ascribed to the monkeys and the proverb including associations with being of good mind, speech and action. In the Western world the phrase is often used to refer to those who deal with impropriety by turning a blind eye.

Here are two items depicting the three wise monkeys. Both were issued in 2004 to celebrate the year of the monkey:

The Barbary Macaque of Gibraltar

The Barbary Macaque (Macaca sylvanus) population in Gibraltar is the only wild monkey population in the European continent, and, unlike that of North Africa, it is thriving. At present, some 300 animals in five troops occupy the area of the Upper Rock area of the Gibraltar Nature Reserve. As they are a tailless species, they are also known locally as Barbary apes or rock apes, despite being monkeys.

The Barbary Macaque is depicted on many Gibraltar's coins, banknotes, postage stamps and philatelic items. Here are several of them:

I wouldn't know how to classify this stamp, most likely under Monkeys in Art (since photography is an art).

In any case it was really interesting the choice of the picture to be part of the UN International Day of Happiness set of stamps last year.

Where is my monkey?

One of my fans in collecting monkeys on stamps is to find monkey which is a very small part of the design, like 3-4 mm, sometimes hardly visible. Here are three examples:

Small monkey in the upper left corner on a stamp issued by Ghana in 1972 as one in a set depicting fauna and flora of Ghana:

Image

The monkey depicted on the stamp is Mona monkey (Cercopithecus mona):

Image

Cute chimpanzee in the right side of a boy, issued in 1965 for use in Fernando Poo as one in a set commemorating 25 years of peace(?):

Image

Here is the Chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes):

Image

And the last stamp depicting the smallest monkey in my collection. The stamp issued in 2009 by Gibraltar as one in a set commemorating the birth bicentenary of Darwin:

The monkey depicted on a page from one of Darwin's books:

The CITES

The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) is a multilateral treaty to protect endangered plants and animals. Its aim is to ensure that international trade in specimens of wild animals and plants does not threaten the survival of the species in the wild, and it accords varying degrees of protection to more than 35,000 species of animals and plants.

To publicize the CITES, Poland issued in 2001 the following SS depicting the CITES logo and many endangered species protected by the CITES including monkey:

Image

The UN issued many sets of stamps, each consisted of four stamps, depicting endangered species protected by the CITES. Many endangered monkeys stamps are depicted among these sets. In 2007, three sets devoted only to monkeys were issued for use in the UN headquarters in NY, Geneva and Vienna. The CITES logo appears on the sheet margin:

UN Headquarter in NY:
- Drill (Mandrillus leucophaeus)
- Common Squirrel monkey (Saimiri sciureus)
- Ring-tailed Lemur (Lemur catta)
- Collared Mangabey (Cercocebus torquatus)

Image

UN Headquarter in Geneva:
- Gelada (Theropithecus gelada)
- De Brazza's monkey (Cercopithecus neglectus)
- Black-and-white Ruffed Lemur (Varecia variegata)
- Silvery Gibbon (Hylobates moloch)

Image

UN Headquarter in Vienna:
- Grivet (Chlorocebus aethiops)
- Proboscis monkey (Nasalis larvatus)
- Chacma Baboon (Papio hamadryas ursinus)

Monkeys in Burmese Art

To celebrate the 700th anniversary of the city Chiang Mai, Thailand issued on April 12, 1996, a set of four stamps. One of them depicting a gilded wood carving positioned above the main entrance at Wat Pan Tao Temple in Chiang Mai. This woodcarving was created in the time when Chiang Mai was under Burmese occupation, hence the central figure is a peacock, an important Royal symbol in Burma.

Looking carefully at the bottom of the carving, there are several allegorical animals:
- A leopard, probably a symbol of a military official of the third rank, probably the governor of Chiang Mai.
- Naga dragons, the guardians of the King.
- Ducks, the symbol of the Mon-people of Bago/Pegu and Western Thailand.
- Monkeys holding the Pagoda, a symbol of the Buddhist faith. The monkeys representing Hanuman monkey-god, the servant of god Rama.

I placed this block in the "block" thread but feel it also deserves a home here so enjoy. I am lucky enough to live only a few miles from Monkey World in Dorset where we visit it almost every year especially to see the orangutans:-

Jambo, the gentle Gorilla

Jambo (1961 – 1992) was a gorilla housed at Jersey Zoo. He is well known for protecting a young boy named Levan Merritt who fell into the gorilla enclosure in 1986. You can see the video here:

Tarsiers are primates of the family Tarsiidae. Although the group was once more widespread, all the species living today are found in the islands of Southeast Asia. All tarsier species are nocturnal in their habits, but like many nocturnal organisms, some individuals may show more or less activity during the daytime. Here are several stamps depicting members of this family:

Monkeys of the Amazon Rainforest

The Amazon rainforest is a moist broadleaf forest that covers most of the Amazon Basin of South America. Due to massive exploitation of the rainforest, many animals became endangered species.

In 2001, GB issued a set of four WWF stamps in SS entitled "Amazon Alive" depicting four endangered species of the Amazon, including Spider monkey:

Spider monkey (Ateles sp.) - The genus contains seven species, all of them are under threat; the black-headed spider monkey, and brown spider monkey are critically endangered:

To commemorate the 500th anniversary of Brasil discovery, Chile issued in year 2000, a SS depicting fauna of the Amazon including Capuchin monkey:

Where is my monkey?

As I have written above, one of my fans in collecting monkeys on stamps is to find monkey which is a very small part of the design, sometimes hardly visible. Here are more four examples:

"Mary with Child and the Long-Tailed Monkey", by Albrecht Dürer (1471 - 1528) - issued by Malta in 1978:

Here is the monkey depicted in the lower part:

Animals in forest - Issued by Cameroon in 2000:

Gorilla in the lower right part:

Burial urn (?) from El Duende - Issued by Colombia in 1991:

Two monkeys (I hope) sitting on the urn:

Common Chimpanzee Stamps

The common chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) is a species of great ape. It lives in in groups in a variety of habitats, including dry savanna, evergreen rainforest, montane forest, swamp forest, and dry woodland-savanna mosaic. The common chimpanzee is listed on the IUCN Red List as an endangered species. Between 170,000 and 300,000 individuals are estimated across its range in the forests and savannahs of West and Central Africa. The biggest threats to the common chimpanzee are habitat destruction, poaching and disease.

In my collection, more than 200 common chimpanzee stamps. Here I chose six of them that are, IMHO, beautifully hand designed:

Benin - Issued on October 1, 1979 as one of a set of four stamps depicting endemic animals. Designed by Pierrette Lambert:

Image

Togo - Issued on June 13, 1977 as one of a set of six stamps depicting endangered animals:

Image

Poland - Issued on August 21, 1972 as on of a set of nine stamps depicting different animals. Designed by Janusz Grabianski:

Image

Israel - Issued on September 17, 1992 as one of a set of four stamps depicting animals from Israeli zoos. Designed by Dvora Bochman:

Image

Sierra Leone - Issued on September 24, 1990 as one of a set of 18 stamps depicting local animals. The stamps were issued as a sheet, all together depicting the map of the country:

Image

Rwanda - Issued on March 20, 1978 as one of a set of eight stamps depicting different apes and monkeys. Designed by Mark Fernand Severin:

Monkey Stamps designed by André Buzin

André Buzin is a Belgian artist who paints fauna and flora. Buzin designed many stamps for several countries, the well known from them are the birds stamps, a definitive stamp series of Belgium. I admire very much the work of Buzin and his designed stamps (for instance, the lion stamps he designed for Congo). In my monkey collection, two sets issued by Rwanda designed by him. Each set consisted of four stamps. Here are two stamps from each one:

Mountain Gorilla (Gorilla gorilla beringei), WWF stamps issued on March 14, 1983:

Image

Common Chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes), issued on September 15, 1988:

Mantled Guereza (Colobus guereza), issued on September 15, 1988:

The Bonobo - Pygmy Chimpanzee

The bonobo (Pan paniscus), formerly called the pygmy chimpanzee, is an endangered great ape and one of the two species making up the genus Pan; the other is Pan troglodytes, or the common chimpanzee. Bonobos are found only in the humid forests of the Democratic Republic of Congo of central Africa. Here are stamps depicting the Bonobo:

Congo (Zaire) - issued in August, 1971:

PDR of Congo - issued in January 31, 1972. Designed and engraved by Michel Monvoisin:

UN - issued in 2000 as one in a set depicting endangered species. The tab also depicting the Bonobo:

Monkeys in Space Exploration - Gordo

As part of the NASA space program, the monkey Gordo was launched from Cape Canaveral on December 13, 1958 in the U.S. PGM-19 Jupiter rocket on its AM-13 mission. The rocket would travel over 1500 miles before returning to Earth. A technical malfunction prevented the capsule's parachute from opening and, both Gordo and the capsule were lost.

Here is a stamp issued by Romania in 2008 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of space exploration. The stamp depicting Gordo the monkey and Jupiter AM-14:

The stamp was issued with tab:

Monkeys in Art - Darwin Theory

To commemorate 200th birth anniversary of Charles Darwin (1809 - 1882), Austria issued on November 24, 2009 the following SS:

Image

I assume the design of the SS depicts a work of art but I have no information. I will appreciate any information about this beautiful design. Thanks.
