Thank you, tacomabob, for posting this lovely set with the lovely "Curious George" stamp.

Beside this stamp, USA issued several stamps depicting monkeys:
- A stamp celebrating the Year of the Monkey issued in 2004. This stamp issued in three different versions.
- A stamp celebrating the Year of the Monkey depicting small monkey on the upper left corner issued in 2016. You can see it on a cover in the previous page.

I personally also collect monkey related stamps so from USA I added the stamp of Tarzan issued 2012 and the stamp depicting William Jennings Bryan, the persecutor in Scopes monkeys trial issued 1986.

Hanuman monkey-god in Wayang Kulit (Indonesian puppet show)

Wayang Kulit is a type of traditional puppet-shadow play that originated in India and is now performed in Indonesia. The Indonesian word "Wayang" is derived from a word meaning shadow or ghost, while "Kulit" means leather or skin. Wayang Kulit is offering a unique combination of ritual, lesson and entertainment.

In Indonesia, the Ramayana epic has been integrated into local culture, and has become the source of moral and spiritual guidance as well as aesthetic expression. Cultural performances such as Wayang Kulit shadow puppet and traditional dances often took their story from Ramayana.

Here are items depicting one of the Ramayana heroes, Hanuman monkey-god, in Wayang Kulit show:

Endangered Primates on WWF Stamps
The Calabar angwantibo

The Calabar angwantibo (Arctocebus calabarensis), also known as the Golden potto, is a primate of the family Lorisidae, closely related to the potto (Perodicticus potto) and to the various lorises. The Calabar angwantibo lives in the rain forests of west Africa. Its range covers Cameroon, Nigeria and Equatorial Guinea. The species takes its name from the Nigerian city of Calabar.

Major threats are habitat destruction from forestry and clearance for cultivation, as well as some hunting for meat in Nigeria. This species will not be affected by low-level habitat disturbance, since it is able to inhabit secondary forests as long as dense undergrowth remains and inter-tree distance are not too great. However, broader clearances are likely to eliminate it because of its weak capacity to disperse.

A set of WWF stamps depicting the Calabar angwantibo was issued by the Republic of Congo (Brazzaville) on June 3, 1996:

Monkeys in the Bible - King Solomon's Ships

The Biblical book of Kings I tells that Solomon, King of Israel, had many trade relations with nearby Kingdoms. His ships brought goods to the Kingdom including "Ivory, apes and peacocks" (Kings I, 10:22). Egyptian murals show the "apes" to be baboons.

Israel issued on November 13, 2016, a SS depicting King Solomon's ships and the goods they brought to Israel including a couple of Baboons:

Endangered Monkeys on WWF Stamps
The Lar Gibbon

The lar gibbon (Hylobates lar), also known as the white-handed gibbon, is a primate in the gibbon family, Hylobatidae. Lar gibbons have the greatest north-south range of any of the gibbon species. They are found in Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar and Thailand. In recent decades, especially, the continental range has been reduced and fragmented. Lar gibbons are likely extinct in China, but if they still exist, they would only be found in southwest Yunnan, their former range.

Lar gibbons are threatened in various ways: they are sometimes hunted for their meat, a parent is killed to capture young animals for pets, but perhaps the most pervasive is the loss of habitat. Lar gibbon habitats are already threatened by forest clearance for the construction of roads, agriculture, ecotourism, domesticated cattle and elephants, forest fires, subsistence logging, illegal logging, new village settlement, and palm oil plantations.

A set of WWF stamps depicting the Lar gibbon was issued by Laos on April 3, 2008:

Sun Wukong, also known as the Monkey King, is a main character in the Chinese classical novel “Journey to the West”. In the novel, he is a monkey born from a stone who acquires supernatural powers through Taoist practices. After rebelling against heaven and being imprisoned under a mountain by the Buddha, he later accompanies the monk Xuanzang on a journey to retrieve Buddhist sutras from India.

The novel was written in the 16th century by Wu Chengen. It is believed that the novel is a criticism against the Feudal rulers in China in those days.

Marco (Matmex) sent me a very beautiful SS depicting the Sun Wukong, the Monkey King issued by the UN office on December 2, 2016. The SS contains three stamps depicting the Monkey King riding on Phoenix, dragon and a tiger.

Endangered Apes on WWF Stamps
The Common Chimpanzee

The common chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) is a species of great ape. It lives in in groups in a variety of habitats, including dry savanna, evergreen rainforest, swamp forest, and dry woodland-savanna mosaic. The common chimpanzee is listed on the IUCN Red List as an endangered species. Between 170,000 and 300,000 individuals are estimated across its range in the forests and savannas of West and Central Africa. The biggest threats to the common chimpanzee are habitat destruction, poaching and disease.

A set of WWF stamps depicting the common chimpanzee was issued by Guinea on February 28, 2006:

The stamp at left has a drawing of the young chimpanzee "Julius", born 26 December 1979 at the Kristiansand zoo, rejected by his mother and raised by the family of the zoo director. He is now the park's most popular attraction.

This pair of stamps was issued on 10 June 2016 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Kristiansand Zoo And Amusement Park. The second stamp show "Captain Sabertooth", apparently a popular character in Norwegian media, who first appeared in a play performed at the zoo in 1990.

Julius the Chimpanzee

Julius (born 26 December 1979) is a chimpanzee at Kristiansand Zoo and Amusement Park in Norway. As a baby Julius was rejected by his mother, and was eventually adopted by the family of Edvard Moseid, the director of the zoo. The baby chimpanzee became the subject of a children's documentary on the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation in 1981, and was soon the park's most popular attraction.

Endangered Monkeys on WWF Stamps
The Diana Monkey

The Diana monkey (Cercopithecus diana) is an Old World monkey found in West Africa, from Sierra Leone to Ivory Coast. The Diana monkey is found in the primary forests, there they live in groups consist of a single male with a number of reproducing females and their infants. The species is regarded as vulnerable by the IUCN since it has lost a considerable amount of primary habitat over the past 30 years and in combination with the effects of hunting is presumed to have undergone a decline of 30% or more over this time-frame.

A set of WWF stamps depicting the Diana Monkey was issued by Ghana on May 16, 1994:

Liberia 1906 Chimpanzee Stamp – First Documentation of an Ape digging for Termites using Tool?

In 2001, two scientists reported in “Nature” magazine that the Liberian postage stamp from 1906 might be the first documentation of digging for termites by a chimpanzee meaning that Jane Goodall’s discovery was not the first.

As a response, Ulrich Kattmann discovered the original drawing that have served as model for the Liberian stamp by the artist Gustav Mützel (1839–1893). Mützel signed the chimpanzee picture, adding the note “n. d. Leben” to show that his drawing was from his own observation of a living ape's behavior, not from a pelt, photograph or other illustration.

The figure shows the female chimpanzee Mafuka from Gabon, who lived in the early 1870’s in Dresden zoo where Mützel drew her. Mafuka and other zoo apes learnt to use tools without any instruction. In Mützel's picture the ape is probably using a stick to explore a knot-hole in the trunk of a tree. But the natural-looking environment is added from the illustrator's imagination. There is no termite mound in the picture, so Jane Goodall remains the first person to document wild chimpanzees 'fishing' with tools for termites.

Endangered Monkeys on WWF Stamps
The Angola Colobus

The Angola colobus (Colobus angolensis) is a primate species of Old World monkey belonging to the genus Colobus. It occurs in dense rainforests, both in the lowlands and coastal mountains. It lives in most of the Congo Basin, Burundi and southwestern Uganda. The species can also be found in East Africa, especially in the montane and coastal forests of Kenya and Tanzania. Although the species is named after Angola, it is quite rare in that country.

This species is threatened in parts of its range by habitat loss through deforestation for timber and conversion of land to agricultural use. Isolated populations, such as those in the Eastern Arc and coastal forests, are especially vulnerable. It is hunted for meat, especially in the Congo Basin.

A set of WWF stamps depicting the Angola Colobus was issued by Angola on December 29, 2004:

Endangered Apes on WWF Stamps
The Central Chimpanzee

The central chimpanzee or tschego (Pan troglodytes troglodytes) is a subspecies of the common chimpanzee (one of the closest living relatives to humans, along with the bonobo). The 2007 International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species classifies the central chimpanzee as endangered. Major threats to central chimpanzee populations include Ebola virus disease, poaching for bushmeat, and habitat destruction. The IUCN attributes this to increasing human presence (agriculture, deforestation, development) and political instability.

A set of WWF stamps depicting the central chimpanzee was issued by Central African Republic on April 25, 2012:

The Geoffroy's Spider Monkey

The Geoffroy's spider monkey (Ateles geoffroyi), also known as the black-handed spider monkey, is a species of spider monkey, a type of New World monkey, from Central America and parts of Mexico.

It is one of the largest New World monkeys. Its arms are significantly longer than its legs, and its prehensile tail can support the entire weight of the monkey and is used as an extra limb. Its hands have only a vestigial thumb, but long, strong, hook-like fingers. These adaptations allow the monkey to move by swinging by its arms beneath the tree branches as can be seen on several stamps.

Geoffroy's spider monkey lives in fission–fusion societies that contain between 20 and 42 members. Its diet consists primarily of ripe fruit and it requires large tracts of forest to survive. As a result of habitat loss, hunting and capture for the pet trade, it is considered to be endangered by the IUCN.

Here is a group of stamps and philatelic items depicting the Geoffroy's Spider monkey:

Issued by Nicaragua on October 10, 1990 and May 21, 1991, respectively:

Monkey Stamps designed by Jean Van Noten

One of my favourite stamp designers is the Belgian artist and designer Jean Van Noten (1903-1982). Although he has made a great number of stamps and art works, not much is known about the life of this famous man. He was born and educated in Brussels. He studied at the Brussels Art Academy and took up painting landscapes, marines and portraits.

Van Noten was one of those artists that started designing tapestries at a certain moment in their career. Among others he was artistic advisor of the National Commission for Handicrafts and Industry, Tapestry department. For this commission he organized competitions and travelling exhibitions abroad.

Van Noten designed dozens of stamps for Belgium, Belgian Congo, Ruanda-Urundi and after their independence for Congo (Kinshasa), Rwanda, Burundi and Senegal.(source: unostamps.com)

In year 1992, Belgium issued a stamp for the Philately Day shows Jean Van Noten designing a Belgian stamp. I still don't have it, and will post once I reach it.

Here is a group of stamps depicting primates and monkeys designed by Van Noten:

Extinct Primates (I)

Mesopithecus pentelici - Mesopithecus ("middle monkey") is an extinct genus of Old World monkey that lived in Europe and western Asia 7 to 5 million years ago. Recent study suggests that they are closely related to the snub-nosed monkeys and doucs. Mesopithecus resembled a modern macaque, with a body length of about 40 centimetres. It was adapted to both walking and climbing, possessing a slender body with long, muscular limbs and flexible fingers.

Mesopithecus pentelici, issued by Macedonia on September 17, 1998. A skeleton restoration on the upper right corner:

Ramapithecus (Rama's Ape) (syn: Sivapithecus) is a genus of extinct apes. Fossil remains of animals now assigned to this genus, dated from 12.2 million years old in the Miocene, have been found since the 19th century in the Siwalik Hills of the Indian subcontinent. Any one of the species in this genus may have been the ancestor to the modern orangutans.

Ramapithecus sivalensis, issued by Nepal on December 31, 2013:

Theropithecus is a genus of primates in the family Cercopithecidae. It contains a single living species, the gelada Baboon, (Theropithecus gelada), native to the Ethiopian Highlands. Additional species are known from fossils, including:Theropithecus brumpti, Theropithecus darti and Theropithecus oswaldi.

Extinct Theropithecus (left), issued by Cuba on December 27, 2002:

Extinct Primates (II)

Subfossil lemurs are lemurs from Madagascar that are represented by recent (subfossil) remains dating from nearly 26,000 years ago to approximately 560 years ago (from the late Pleistocene until the Holocene). They include both living and extinct species, although the term more frequently refers to the extinct giant lemurs.

Giant Lemur, issued by Micronesia on May 24, 1999:

Smilodectes is a genus of early primate that lived in North America during the middle Eocene, some 55 million years ago.

Smilodectes, issued by Guyana in 1991:

The Cebidae are one of the five families of New World monkeys now recognised. Extant members are the capuchin monkeys and squirrel monkeys. These species are found throughout tropical and subtropical South and Central America. Several Genera and subfamilies of the Cebidae were extinct.

Endangered Primates on WWF Stamps
The Patas Monkey

Patas monkeys (Erythrocebus patas) live only in Africa. The species has a wide distribution across sub Saharan Africa from the western tip of Senegal to East Africa. They live mainly in savanna and woodland habitats since they are predominantly terrestrial. Patas monkeys are listed in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species since there is a continuing decline in their population.

A set of WWF stamps depicting the Patas monkey was issued by Sierra Leone on October 11, 2004:
