Lord Derby:

Edward John Stanley, 18th Earl of Derby, MC DL (21 April 1918 – 28 November 1994) was a British peer, landowner and businessman.

The eldest son of Lord Stanley and the Hon. Sibyl Cadogan, daughter of Viscount Chelsea, his grandfather was Edward Stanley, 17th Earl of Derby, a British Ambassador to Paris.

He was educated at Eton and Magdalen College, Oxford. His father having died in 1938, he succeeded his grandfather in the earldom and other family titles.

Edward Stanley served with the Grenadier Guards in the Second World War, being promoted Major, and was awarded the Military Cross for gallantry during the Italian Campaign.

Lord Derby married Isabel Milles-Lade, daughter of the Hon. Henry Milles-Lade, in 1948. Their marriage was childless.

Lady Derby died in 1990; Lord Derby survived her by four years and died in 1994, aged 76, being succeeded in the family titles by his nephew, Edward Stanley as the 19th Earl.

Following family tradition, Lord Derby was an owner of thoroughbred racehorses: his colt Teleprompter won the 1984 Arlington Million at Arlington Park, Illinois.

The earliest date I have seen, & using a set of the European Assembly Elections stamps, as this 4 weeks before the Horse racing stamps were issued.

Presumably this postmark was available for the period of the Exhibition, 5th April 1979 to 1st July 1979.

This was intriguing for me as I used to live in West Ewell near Epsom.

Here's a quote from 3rd Epsom (St. Martin’s) Scout Group History relating to 1979:

All Sections of the Group, which with 135 members was now the largest in the District, took part in “Cub Scout Venture (CSV) '79”, a District Activity Camp in Hook Road Arena, the first of several such District Events.

Hook Road Arena is an open grassy area used for events or recreation.

The British crown, the successor to the English crown and the Scottish dollar, came into being with the Union of the kingdoms of England and Scotland in 1707. As with the English coin, its value was five shillings.

In the previous four entries I have not been able to give any details of the usages of these slogans, towns used, dates etc., as no details are provided in PPP.

From what I have shown I can say it was used in Epsom & Sutton but I don't know if any other nearby towns were used. All dates I have are prior to the running of the Derby so I am guessing it was used from January to May. I will need to look into this further.

The World Dressage Championships 1978, Goodwood, Chichester, West Sussex:

Dressage (a French term, most commonly translated to mean "training") is a highly skilled form of riding performed in exhibition and competition, as well as an "art" sometimes pursued solely for the sake of mastery. As an equestrian sport defined by the International Equestrian Federation, dressage is described as "the highest expression of horse training" where "horse and rider are expected to perform from memory a series of predetermined movements.

The Dressage World Championship is held every four years. The best horse and rider competitions in the world compete for individual and team titles. The Dressage World Championship is since 1990, held at the World Equestrian Games in conjunction with other equestrian world championships.

In 1978, the estate of 10th Duke and Duchess of Richmond staged the 1978 World Championships on the front lawns of Goodwood House. The Swiss horse and rider team of Stückelberger and Granat made dressage history as the most successful performers in international Dressage competition for the nation of Switzerland. After winning equestrian individual gold at the 1976 Montreal Olympics, they took gold again at the 1978 Dressage World Championships in Goodwood.

Goodwood Racecourse is a horse-racing track five miles north of Chichester, West Sussex, in England controlled by the family of the Duke of Richmond, whose seat is nearby Goodwood House. It hosts the annual Glorious Goodwood meeting in late July and early August, which is one of the highlights of the British flat racing calendar, and is home to three of the UK's 36 annual Group 1 flat races, the Sussex Stakes, the Goodwood Cup and the Nassau Stakes. Although the race meeting has become known as 'Glorious Goodwood', it is sponsored by Qatar and officially called the 'Qatar Goodwood Festival'

From Goodwood we go to Great Yarmouth.

Great Yarmouth, often called Yarmouth, is a seaside town in Norfolk, England, straddling the mouth of the River Yare, about 20 miles east of Norwich. A population of around 39,000 makes it Norfolk's third most populous place. Yarmouth has been a seaside resort since 1760 and a gateway from the Norfolk Broads to the North Sea. As a tourist centre, it was boosted when a railway opened in 1844 gave visitors easier, cheaper access & triggered an influx of settlers. Wellington Pier opened in 1854 and Britannia Pier in 1858 & Yarmouth became a booming resort.

Great Yarmouth racecourse is a horse racing course located a mile north of Great Yarmouth, owned by Arena Racing Company. The track takes the form of a narrow oblong of a mile and five furlongs round, with two long straights about five furlongs in length. It is a left-handed course, used for flat racing only. An extension to the finishing straight allows races of up to a mile to be run on the straight course.

Racing at Great Yarmouth was first recorded in 1715, when a lease was granted by the Great Yarmouth Corporation to a group of innkeepers for some land where they could stage race meetings. Racing may well have been taking place there before that date.

The most valuable race is the John Musker Fillies' Stakes, run over a mile and a quarter in September. In 1998 Dubai Millennium won his debut at Great Yarmouth impressively, ridden by Frankie Dettori, before becoming one of the best horses to run for the worldwide Godolphin operation, owned by the Dubai royal family. Since then Great Yarmouth winners included Ouija Board, who went on to win the English and Irish Oaks before scoring at the Breeders Cup, the annual international horse racing championships in the USA.

Great Yarmouth, like Ayr, had a generic slogan everyday machine slogan cancel "Come Racing at Great Yarmouth" combined with a horse passing the winning post.

I hear there were rumblings near the winning post at Aintree Racecourse today near Liverpool, I think "Old Rummy" was turning in his grave there.

Old Rummy who won the race 3 times with 2 seconds from 5 starts had just heard this years race in early April had fallen victim to Coronavirus.

Because medics are there for jockeys who are injured when the horses fall - as they always do in that race - and for any other accidents to stable etc personnel. It's not just the punters, who would only fall over drunk, but the entertainers themselves.

There is very little jumps racing in this country, compared to the past & may be that is the difference. All race fields here are followed by two ambulances.

The Oakbank Easter Carnival & Warrnambool in May are two big regional jumps racing programmes & we will just have to wait & see what decision will be made there.

So lets leave that news there & back to the covers.

That was a quick trip to Great Yarmouth & next we go to Hamilton & Lanark in Glasgow.

I have decided to show these together after realising that both are in Glasgow, the racing slogans are similar, both applied at Glasgow (South DO) & alternate between each other in a 6 month period in 1968. They were used in no other year.

Parsons, Peachey & Pearson record their usages as follows:

LP 629t type 311 Racing at Lanark used from 15th April to 5th May 1968.
LP 639t type 315 Racing at Hamilton used from 6th May to 14th June 1968.
LP 665t type 311 Racing at Lanark used from 15th June to 28th June 1968.
LP 668t type 315 Racing at Hamilton used from 29th June to 12th July 1968.
LP 675t type 311 Racing at Lanark used from 13th July to 6th September 1968.
LP 700t type 315 Racing at Hamilton used from 7th September to 28th September 1968.

I am guessing that the slogan changed after each race meeting.

I recently went to a function where jockey Craig Williams was the special guest. Craig of course rode Vow & Declare to victory in last year's Melbourne Cup. He has ridden all over the world including Scotland. The audience was a little surprised there was racing in Scotland as so little news of the racing there travels to Australia. Craig said like the other jockeys that he enjoyed riding there.

Craig's autograph on a cover prepared by myself postmarked on Melbourne Cup day. He has made a smiley face out of 2019.

Lanark is a small town in the central belt of Scotland with a population of just over 8,000, 27 miles south east of Glasgow. The name is believed to come from the Cumbric Lanerc meaning "clear space, glade". It is traditionally the county town of Lanarkshire with a railway station & coach station that have frequent services to Glasgow. Some residents commute to work in Glasgow & Edinburgh.

Lanark Racecourse (closed October 1977) was a Scottish horse racing venue, reputedly founded by King William the Lion of Scotland (1165-1214).

The course was a right-handed oval, 10 furlongs (2,000 m) round, with a run-in of around 3 1⁄2 furlongs (700 m). It was home to Britain's oldest horse race, the Lanark Silver Bell, which after a gap of three decades following Lanark's closure, is now contested again at nearby Hamilton Park Racecourse. The original Silver Bell is commonly reported to have been a gift of William the Lion in the 12th century. While the original bell no longer exists, the present one dates from the 17th century. The course also staged the longest handicap in the racing calendar, the 2 1⁄2-mile William the Lion Handicap, which closed the Scottish flat racing season.

Hamilton is a town in South Lanarkshire, in the central Lowlands of Scotland with a population of just over 54,000. It is 12 miles south-east of Glasgow, 35 miles, south-west of Edinburgh & 74 miles north of Carlisle. Hamilton is situated on the south bank of the River Clyde at its confluence with the Avon Water. Hamilton is the county town of the historic county of Lanarkshire.

Originally known as Cadzow, it was renamed Hamilton in the time of James, Lord Hamilton, who was married to Princess Mary, the daughter of King James II.

Hamilton Park Racecourse is a thoroughbred horse racing venue in Hamilton, Scotland to the south of Glasgow. It is a flat racing venue, with a season which runs from May to October.

Racing has been staged in Hamilton since 1782 with the present racecourse opening in 1926 & since 1973 being owned by the Hamilton Park Trust which ploughs back all profits into developing the course.

The notable races here have been the Glasgow Stakes, Braveheart Stakes (discontinued from 2015), Lanark Silver Bell & the Scottish Stewards' Cup.
