Benham "Derby Day 200 Exhibition" cachet fdc cancelled with the Derby 200 Exhibition, Royal Academy London pictorial postmark 9th May 1979:

The earliest date I have seen, & using a set of the European Assembly Elections stamps, as this 4 weeks before the Horse racing stamps were issued.

Presumably this postmark was available for the period of the Exhibition, 5th April 1979 to 1st July 1979. I found this one misfiled. :)

Over to Haydock Park Racecourse (at Newton-le-Willows).

Haydock Park Racecourse is a racecourse in Merseyside, North West England. The racecourse is set in an area of parkland bounded by the towns of Haydock to the west, Ashton-in-Makerfield to the north, Golborne to the east and Newton-le-Willows to the south. Horse racing had been run in Newton for many years (the great racemare Queen of Trumps won at Newton in 1836), and the venue was also used for hare coursing in the 1880s. The current racecourse was opened in 1899.

The track is a mostly flat left-handed oval of around 1 mile 5 furlongs. An extension or "chute" to the straight allows sprints of up to six furlongs to be run on a straight course. There are courses for flat racing and National Hunt racing.

Come Racing Series Number 4 - Haydock Park
Image

Image

Image

Produced by Stamp Publicity (Worthing) Ltd of Worthing Sussex
Note this cover is like most of the other covers in the series as it is franked with the 9p "Saddling Mahmoud for The Derby 1936" stamp.

The Sprint Cup is a Group 1 flat horse race run at Haydock Park open to thoroughbreds aged three years or older over a distance of 6 furlongs (1,207 metres).

The event was established in 1966, and it was originally open to horses aged two or older. It was devised by Robert Sangster, the heir to the Vernons Pools business, who later became a leading racehorse owner/breeder. During the early part of its history the race was sponsored by Vernons.

In 1979 the race was won by Double Form who was ridden by Geoff Lewis trained by Fulke Johnson Houghton & owned by Baroness H. Thyssen.

Double Form (14 February 1975–1983) was an Irish-bred British Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. A specialist sprinter, he showed promise as a two-year-old in 1977, and improved to become a high-class performer in 1978. He won only one race as a three-year-old but was placed in several major sprints. In 1979 he improved again to become the highest-rated sprinter in the United Kingdom, winning the Temple Stakes, King's Stand Stakes and Haydock Sprint Cup in England and the Prix de l'Abbaye in France.

Record 19 starts 7 wins 4 seconds 5 thirds
Major wins
Temple Stakes (1979)

John Francome MBE (13 December 1952) is a former National Hunt Champion Jockey, television pundit and author.

Born in Swindon, Wiltshire, the son of a railway fireman, his family had no connection with the horse racing world. At sixteen years old he became apprentice to Lambourn trainer Fred Winter and so began his career as a jockey. He rode a total of 1,138 winners, his last being in April 1985. During the course of his career he was Champion Jockey seven times, between 1976 and 1985. Francome is the third most successful National Hunt jump jockey of all time after Tony McCoy (20 championships) and Peter Scudamore (8 championships). He is dubbed the best jockey never to have won the Grand National.

Limited edition souvenir cover number __ of __?
It is not clear to me whether this is Colin Tinkler senior or junior as both were jockeys, but I suspect it is junior - Colin Harwin Tinkler.

Born in Leeds on April 7, 1954, Colin Harwin Tinkler rode his first winner, Montabel, at Teeside on October 10, 1970. He was eventually to ride 395 winners in total.

Colin's career was abruptly ended when his mount, O'er the Border, suddenly ducked out when leading in a novice chase at Newcastle on November 13, 1982.
He was thrown against a tall, wooden upright, supported by a concrete post. His left femur was smashed in seven places and he lost the sight of his right eye.

Among the good races he won were the 1978 Topham Trophy on Canit; 1975 Arkle on Broncho ll; 1973 Greenall Whitley Chase on Tregarron and the 1974 Fred Withington on Meridan ll.

From Horsham to Cheam, Surrey.

Possibly a giveaway by a medical company like "Sigma Pharmaceuticals".
Horsham is a market town on the upper reaches of the River Arun on the fringe of the Weald in West Sussex, England. The town is 31 miles south south-west of London, 18.5 miles north-west of Brighton & 26 miles north-east of the county town of Chichester.

The first historical record of Horsham is from AD 947. The name may mean either "horse home" or "Horsa's home" (a Saxon warrior who was granted land in the area). The town has historically been known for horse trading in early medieval times. :)

In an Isle of Man philatelic 'contrived' cover I found an insert about the island's branch post offices. I thought this might be of interest.

Four Roads Post Office.
This PO is near to Derbyhaven, where the first ever Derby Horse-race was run

The land was owned by Lord Derby and from other information on the web I believe he and his friends staged a race (almost certainly for a wager) on the peninsula. Whether it was regarded anywhere else as the first Derby Race I don't know, but obviously the locals like the story.

BigSaint, I remain in perpetual awe with regard to your voluminous collection of horse racing philatelic interest. I suspect that there would be very little room on this thread for anyone else to post anything that is not already in your collection. Discussion with Puffin has revealed your many course memberships in Victoria so I should be totally un-surprised at the plethora of material that comes up. Purely as a matter of personal interest and curiosity, is there any philatelic areas, other than JFK related and horse racing related that you collect?
I prefer to collect UK, British Commonwealth esp Pacific area ( not excluding West Indies/Canada ) and Western Europe. At the bottom of my zone of interest is Eastern Europe and communist countries.

Visit the Hull Show - 1976:
Image
PPP 2846t type 1880 used from 5th - 31st July 1976
Hull, North Humberside to Manchester - 30th July 1976 (2nd last day of use).
Kingston upon Hull, usually abbreviated to Hull, is a port city & unitary authority in the East Riding of Yorkshire, northeastern England. It lies upon the River Hull at its confluence with the Humber Estuary, 25 miles inland from the North Sea, 50 miles east of Leeds, 34 miles south-east of York, 54 miles north-east of Sheffield & 189 miles north of London. With a population of 260,000, Hull is the fourth-largest city in Yorkshire & the Humber.

The town of Wyke on Hull was founded late in the 12th century by the monks of Meaux Abbey as a port from which to export their wool. Renamed Kings-town upon Hull in 1299, Hull has been a market town, military supply port, trading hub, fishing & whaling centre & industrial metropolis.

I can't really find too much information on this Horse Show only that thousands of spectators flock to East Park in Hull, to support Horse Jumping & events. Hundreds competitors come from all over, many from the North West and Midlands to compete against Yorkshire based riders. :)

Havering-atte-Bower is a village and outlying settlement of Romford in Greater London, England. It is located in the far north of the London Borough of Havering, on the border with Essex. Havering-atte-Bower has been the location of a number of palaces and large houses including Bower House.

The name is recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Haueringas. The last syllable is the only clear difference in pronunciation as v was written as u in Middle English and Anglo-Norman orthography. It is an ancient folk name meaning settlement of the followers of a man called Hæfer. The name is recorded as Hauering atte Bower in 1272. The atte Bower suffix means at the royal residence and refers to Havering Palace.

Edward the Confessor was the first royal to take interest in the area. He established a hunting lodge here, which over the years would become a palace or 'bower'.

The House of Commons, officially the Honourable the Commons of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland in Parliament assembled, is the lower house of the Parliament of the United Kingdom. It meets in the Palace of Westminster but owing to shortage of space, its office accommodation extends into Portcullis House.

The Commons is an elected body consisting of 650 members known as members of Parliament (MPs). Members are elected to represent constituencies by the first-past-the-post system and hold their seats until Parliament is dissolved.

The House of Commons of England started to evolve in the 13th and 14th centuries. It became the House of Commons of Great Britain after the political union with Scotland in 1707, and assumed the title of "House of Commons of Great Britain and Ireland" after the political union with Ireland at the start of the 19th century. The "United Kingdom" referred to was the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland from 1800, and became the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland after the independence of the Irish Free State in 1922.

The House of Lords, also known as the House of Peers and domestically usually referred to simply as the Lords, is the upper house of the Parliament of the United Kingdom. Membership is granted by appointment or else by heredity or official function. Like the House of Commons, it meets in the Palace of Westminster. Officially, the full name of the house is the Right Honourable the Lords Spiritual and Temporal of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland in Parliament assembled.

Unlike the elected House of Commons, members of the House of Lords (excluding 90 hereditary peers elected among themselves and two peers who are ex officio members) are appointed. The membership of the House of Lords is drawn from the peerage and is made up of Lords Spiritual and Lords Temporal. The Lords Spiritual are 26 bishops in the established Church of England. Of the Lords Temporal, the majority are life peers who are appointed by the monarch on the advice of the Prime Minister, or on the advice of the House of Lords Appointments Commission. However, they also include some hereditary peers including four dukes.

Membership was once an entitlement of all hereditary peers, other than those in the peerage of Ireland, but under the House of Lords Act 1999, the right to membership was restricted to 92 hereditary peers. Since 2008, only one of them is female (Countess of Mar); most hereditary peerages can be inherited only by men.

The Isle of Man, also Manx & also known as Mann is a self-governing British Crown dependency situated in the Irish Sea between Great Britain and Ireland. The head of state, Queen Elizabeth II, holds the title of Lord of Mann & is represented by a lieutenant governor. The United Kingdom has responsibility for the island's defence.

The Isle of Man is located in the middle of the northern Irish Sea, almost equidistant from England to the east, Northern Ireland to the west, and Scotland (closest) to the north; while Wales to the south is almost the distance of the Republic of Ireland to the southwest. It is 32 miles long &, at its widest point, 14 miles wide. It has an area of around 221 square miles with a population of almost 84,000.

Internationally, the Isle of Man is known for the Isle of Man TT (Tourist Trophy) motorcycle races & for the Manx cat, a breed of cat with short or no tails, not so much for horse racing.

The first racecourse on the Isle Of Man was at Langness in the 17th century. Peel & Douglas came in the early 19th century & Strang late in the 19th century. Bellevue started in 1912 but was not popular & closed in 1931 when betting was made illegal.

The main race on the Island was the Manx Derby. The first Manx Derby was run on the the birthday of James Stanley, 7th Earl of Derby, KG (31 January 1607 – 15 October 1651) soon after he took control of the Island in 1627. Sometimes he is confused with Edward Smith-Stanley, 12th Earl of Derby PC (1 September 1752 (O.S.) – 21 October 1834) after whom the English Derby was named.

The course of the Derby went from Hango Hill, to Derbyhaven, Langness & back. The horses were restricted to those who had been bred on the Island. The Derby raced from time to time at various tracks & finished up at Bellevue in 1931. It was revived in 1974 at Great Meadow near Castletown & continued until 1984 when Red Rum was the guest of honour.

British Horse Racing horse racing stamps (SG #1087 to #1090) which has no connection to horse racing that I can find. In fact the only sporting event that it lays claim to is a cricket match way back in the 18th Century. So why I am I showing a Horse Racing fdc postmarked in Ilford Essex because:

Signed by former jockey, Terry Biddlecomb.
Terry Biddlecombe (2 February 1941 – 5 January 2014) was an English National Hunt racing jockey in the 1960s & 1970s. He was Champion Jockey in 1965, 1966 & 1969.

Biddlecombe was born in Hartpury, Gloucester on 2 February 1941. He rode 114 winners in the 1964/1965 season, & followed that with 102 the next season. In 1968/1969, he rode 77 winners, which saw him tied with Bob Davies. One of his finest moments came in the 1967 Cheltenham Gold Cup, when he rode the 100-8 horse Woodland Venture to victory. In 1972 he finished second in the Grand National on Gay Trip. Between 1972 and 1974, he rode many times for Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, a well-known supporter of horse racing. In April 1974 he appeared on the television programme This Is Your Life, & finally retired from competitive racing having posted more than 900 winners.

He married the trainer Henrietta Knight in 1995 & she trained Best Mate to 3 Cheltenham Gold Cup wins.

Jersey, officially the Bailiwick of Jersey, is a British Crown dependency located near the coast of Normandy, France. It is the second-closest of the Channel Islands to France, after Alderney.

Jersey was part of the Duchy of Normandy, whose dukes went on to become kings of England from 1066. After Normandy was lost by the kings of England in the 13th century, & the ducal title surrendered to France, Jersey & the other Channel Islands remained attached to the English crown.

The bailiwick consists of the island of Jersey, the largest of the Channel Islands, along with surrounding uninhabited islands & rocks collectively named Les Dirouilles, Les Écréhous, Les Minquiers, Les Pierres de Lecq, & other reefs. Although the bailiwicks of Jersey & Guernsey are often referred to collectively as the Channel Islands, the "Channel Islands" are not a constitutional or political unit. Jersey has a separate relationship to the Crown from the other Crown dependencies of Guernsey & the Isle of Man, although all are held by the monarch of the United Kingdom.

Jersey is a self-governing parliamentary democracy under a constitutional monarchy, with its own financial, legal and judicial systems, and the power of self-determination. The Lieutenant Governor on the island is the personal representative of the Queen.

Jersey is not part of the United Kingdom, & has an international identity separate from that of the UK, but the UK is constitutionally responsible for the defence of Jersey. The definition of United Kingdom in the British Nationality Act 1981 is interpreted as including the UK and the Islands together.

Jersey is an island measuring 45.6 square miles. It lies in the English Channel, about 12 nautical miles from the Cotentin Peninsula in Normandy, France,& about 87 nautical miles south of Great Britain. It is the largest and southernmost of the Channel Islands.

Horse racing is conducted at Les Landes Race Course which can be found at Les Landes in St Ouen next to the ruins of Grosnez Castle in the north west of the island. Les Landes Race Course holds nine race meetings a year.

30th Anniversary of the Victory of Corbiere in the 1983 Grand National at Aintree.

Jersey Lighthouse - Corbiere. B.jpg
Corbiere was named after the Jersey lighthouse because of his white blaze

A Grand National winning horse named after a famous Jersey landmark has appeared on a new set of stamps.

Corbiere won the Grand National in 1983 by three-quarters of a length.

The horse, named after the Jersey lighthouse, was jockeyed by Ben de Haan and was the first Grand National winner to be trained by a woman, Jenny Pitman.

Melanie Gouzinis from Jersey Post said Corbiere was remembered with so fondly that his death in 1988 was reported on BBC news.

She said: "Corbiere was owned by Bryan Burrough, the great grandson of the First Lord Trent, Jesse Boot, founder of Boots the chemist.

"Jesse Boot had married a local girl, Florence Booth and together, they gifted significant park and recreational land to the people of Jersey."

She said Jenny Pitman, Bryan Burrough and Ben de Haan were all delighted to help with the research for the stamps.

Jersey Corbiere Stamps C.jpg
Corbiere won the Grand National at Aintree in 1983

'Big white blaze'

Mr Burrough provided photographs which were used for artistic reference and Ms Pitman wrote the text for the envelopes and presentation packs.

Mr Burrough said: "The horse had a big white blaze so it also seemed appropriate to name it after a lighthouse.

"We took Corbiere over to Jersey to see the lighthouse and parade at the racecourse, however as you can imagine on a windy day with a restless horse the photo is not perfect."

The stamps have been painted by artist Nick Watton.

Ms Pitman said Corbiere was "not the fastest by any means but with an undeniable strength of character, he was as brave as a lion and his enthusiasm for life warmed your heart on the bleakest winter day."

"His exuberance out at exercise, bucking and kicking at the end of a morning's work as he made his way back home from the gallops, required the patience of a saint and his devoted rider, Gary Curran, pandered to his every whim.

"No horse I've trained loved life more than Corky," he said.

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-jersey-22109315

Jenny Pitman, referred to above, is the ex-wife of jumps jockey Richard Pitman. Richard is "infamous" for his loss on Australian champion jumper Crisp to Red Rum in the 1973 Grand National.
