Clearly no-one grows hellebores!

Back to stamps. I said we'd go east so we have gone as far east as you can on a UK map, New Zealand. Page one

Image

...and a bit closer

Image
Image

London Prints

Image
Image

I have Jim to thank for the first of the 1/-'s. The other was a lucky spot, 2 shilling green stamps sold together with no attribution. My hunch was right so £100 well spent.

A nice Richardson chestnut

Image

Richardson shillings

Image

Two Davies pennies

Image

Two more

Image

Davies 2d's. Not entirely sure of the shades which you will see are very different

Image
Image

SG40-42 3d's

Image

A very blue-green Davies shilling

Image

..and with a couple of mates to show the colour

Image

Plenty more to come but this is enough to digest for the moment. TBC.

You could cut the perfs off!?? If you want to do jealousy look at the NZ chalon head thread which I'm sure you will have . Makes mine look ordinary.

Here are some more from the bottom line of page one, the rouletted stamps

2d with a hole which does not bother me

Image

3d with no hole

Image

1/- with dodgy top corner but nice looker

Image

Finally a 2d with manuscript cancel. I posted it on the other thread before it was lost in the photobucket fiasco. Not sure about the "perfs"

Image

Finally a taster of what's to come later

To be continued

These are the perf 13's

Image
Image

Now the pelure papers

Image

Both have issues. Thanks to Jim again for the one on the left. Now the 2d's

Image

The left hand one has a hole at the top but was very cheap. The other one was just cheap. Now the perforated 2d's. Both in nice condition

Image

I still need the shilling. Next sg96 and 96a. The former cost me £25. I think it was advertised as sg11, certainly as a Richardson print but the cancel suggested to me it was not

Image

Now the NZ watermarks

Image
Image

I used to think the manuscript cancel on the 2d was a bit messy. Some may think it adds to the value?? Next are the rouletted

Image
Image

Next sg105 and 106. Until I took the photo I hadn't noticed the different shades of the 1/-

Image

Now the 1864 issues

Image
Image

The last blue is an odd shade. That's the end of page 2. Page 3 to follow later in the week. TBC.

Slight delay whilst getting my head round imgbox. Am I the only one who found copying and pasting unfathomable. Anyway here's page 3 of my NZ collection

Image

The 4d rose is a favourite stamp. Just bought the one on the right

Image

Another favourite stamp

Image

If I could work out how to rotate images, this one and the one above would be vertical. the 2 yellows above have come out a bit orange. This one is the true 4d orange which is not too far in colour from the 4d yellow so easy to misidentify. Perhaps that is why this one only cost me £20

Image

Here are some 6d blues

Image
Image
Image

All bought as sg135/6 but the astute among you will see that the top two are perf 10 at the top and the left hand one at the bottom too. Hence the catalogue value goes from £50 to £500. Happy days.

The very distinctive sg137

Image

Sg138 wmk NZ

Image

I will have to show sg139 sideways but at least you can read the cancel.

Image

Might as well do this one sideways as well

Image

It's not so much the front as the back which is of interest

Image

Lozenge watermark. You don't see them as often as you once did. That's it for now. TBC.

Yep this rotating with imgbox is crazy.

I would have to say the 4 pence rose and yellow are my favourites out of the NZ Chalons.

Looks like you got some bargains with those perf 10s, tell you the truth i'm no good with perfs.

The 6d's must have cost me about a fiver each, which was good. One has a smallish thin patch, but what the hell.

Here are my sidefaces. To be honest they don't do a lot for me, but each to his own

Image

More of the same

Image
Image

...and another

Image
Image

I still have quite a bit more NZ to show, when I can work out how to rotate the images which have managed to turn themselves sideways. TBC.

Let's go to India. It's not a favourite country in the sense that I have not particularly concentrated on filling all the gaps but I've got a few. Here we go

Image

The bottom right stamp in the next scan was in a mixed lot I picked up for relatively little money. A nice bonus

Image

Quite pretty stamps, though not the most beautiful copies here

Image

Image

I'll save the later QV for another time. Busy day ahead. Expecting a parcel!!

Here are the last of my India QV. I am going to be lazy and provide very little narrative. Nothing very special here, though the odd one is nicely cancelled.

Still plenty of Commonwealth to show, and it's just the prelude. I think we'll head south and west next. TBC.

Although the range of QV Seychelles is fairly small, I think they make up for it with their beauty

Image
Image

I have extended the collection to cover Ed VII and GV. As imgbox seems to rotate the image back to the angle the camera was at when "horizontal", you will have to have these sideways

Image
Image

Pretty stamps in nice colours and not too expensive. A good choice for the novice collector.
A couple of pictures of sierra Leone to finish. Not as pretty by half

Image
Image

Back to the West indies next I think. TBC.

I was going to show my Trinidad collection but realise it has already featured , so we will have to travel east instead to...………...Hong Kong. I have a reasonably complete collection, put together at reasonable cost. Pretty stamps, particularly the Ed VII and GV. QV first

Image
Image

The top row are nicely cancelled. You see some pretty bad fakes from time to time. In the next section the 96c ochre is the key value, again nicely cancelled. I try to buy good lookers, though not always easy with HK as they tended to obliterate them pretty well

Image
Image

Next 1876 to 1880. The last 16 "yellow" is an unusual shade, more olive than yellow.

Image
Image

That's all for now, the rest of HK will have to wait. TBC.

My pleasure. I thoroughly recommend it to others. Here's the rest of the HK QV

Image
Image

These are the overprints. There are some VERY expensive ones I have not pursued. The sg45 (second scan, middle row left) without the Chinese character is an interesting stamp, interesting in the sense that half of those advertised on ebay have a Chinese character in plain sight and the other half have the Chinese character hidden by a conveniently placed cancel. I think mine is okay.

Image
Image

Here are the Edward VII, lovely stamps. The close up shows 3 high vals. The $5 is a perfin. The $10 is nice. A lot worse copy sold on ebay a couple of days ago for well over twice what I paid for mine, so money well spent.

Image
Image

Some more close ups of high vals. The $5 is a nice stamp. The $10 I still need. Prices have shot up recently so I may have to be patient. Finally the GV. Not too many gaps and no great desire to fill them.

Image
Image

That's the HK. Not sure where I go next. TBC.

I shall start the week by mopping up a few miscellaneous Carribean countries where the range is relatively small. Apologies for the sideways images at the beginning. First Antigua

Image

As you can see, the Antiguan stamps are very similar, the differences between then being quite subtle. Bermuda next

Image

British Honduras. Still a few gaps

Image

Dominica. Pretty stamps

Image

St Christopher

Image

Nevis, a favourite of mine

Image

Lastly Turks and Caicos

Image
Image

Not sure where next. Maybe Canada. TBC.

I've never really thought much about them. They were not bought individually, just part of a lot. Now that I look in my catalogue they appear to be SG36 and 38 valued at £550 and £750 in 2006. Gosh!

Canada then. Nova Scotia first

Image

These are nice and weren't expensive. Still looking for the dark green

Image

New Brunswick next

Image

One of my favourite stamps. One has a slight surface scuff but again they weren't expensive

Image

This one was more expensive

Image

On to the Dominion of Canada. The first 3 imperfs all have small issues but are decent copies

I have missed a few when taking my last batch of pictures so I will have to take some more and post the rest next weekend. TBC.

Here's some of the stuff I had not photographed when I posted last week

These are my only Vancouver Island. I love this stamp. They cost about the same despite the markedly different condition, about £30 each.

Image

A couple from Newfoundland

Image
Image

Some Canada

Image

I like the 10c because of the numerous shades

Image
Image

Not that I have that many. I will finish for now with a favourite of mine

I will do some more Newfoundland and Canada next time round and then head to Africa. TBC.

whenever i see these for sale they are so faded and dull along with other faults.

Hi Sue

Thanks for the nice comment. There must be so many nice stamp/covers out there that never see the light of day, which is a shame, so I thought I'd share mine. Keep watching, I've only just started!

Africa then. South Africa to be precise, starting with COGH

Image

The gap at the beginning was filled in the last week by this pair which I picked up for £30, which I thought was a bargain. Not perfect but for £30 a no brainer

Image

I find the red shades easy to differentiate but the blues are hard so I have largely relied on the seller's description

The last of the triangles. No woodblocks.....yet

My first attempt at posting images using the new board's software. Gold Coast

Close up of the perf 12.5's. All acquired fairly inexpensively. The 4d is a bit faded. The 6d I acquired recently for less than a tenner

This one was a bonus. I bought a smallish lot which included some mint sets from the late 1970's (flowers/birds) and some earlier definitives. Cost £17. I sold off the modern stamps for about £17 which left the older stuff at nil cost. This one was loose in the packet. When I looked at it closely it was a decent copy of SG1.

IMG_6690.JPG

They are my attributions, which hopefully are correct
IMG_6691.JPG

I was told the 5/- had a fake cancel. I don't know why that was the view.
IMG_6692.JPG

A few mint
IMG_6693.JPG

Where did they all come from?
IMG_6694.JPG

I think I still have to do Mauitius and St Helena, so those next I think. TBC.

Mauritius. I have avoided the very early imperfs, with one exception, but otherwise I have a fairly complete range
IMG_6683.JPG

I would certainly recommend Mauritius to the novice collector. Interesting stamps and not too pricey in the main.
IMG_6684.JPG

Unless someone can fix the curse of the rotating images, you will just have to have these sideways
IMG_6685.JPG

These too I'm afraid
IMG_6686.JPG

Last one

And here's a Northern Brown Argus which I spotted today. Never seen one before in my life. About as spectacular as butterflies get in Northern England

St Helena . Not too many gaps in the early stuff

IMG_7806.JPG

I like the big stamps of Edward VII and George V
IMG_7807.JPG
IMG_7808.JPG

Here are some new half-lengths I have added since I posted Victoria. First an SG6 in a shade I didn't have
IMG_7815.JPG

Secondly what I think is SG10
IMG_7816.JPG

Lastly a reddish lilac. Not perfect but a good shade
IMG_7817.JPG

I will mop up the rest of British Commonwealth in the next couple of weeks perhaps, take my statues down and then we can move on to something more exciting. TBC.

I don't think I showed the later Mauritius before, so here they are
IMG_7796.JPG
IMG_7797.JPG

Quite a few gaps in the later period which I haven't tried to fill

A few bits and pieces. Nigeria

Early Rhodesia

Can't help regarding the cancel. It's a fairly common style of postmark (unique to St Helena??) but the only one with a circle round it.

Here's some Jamaica to end the day

IMG_7775.JPG

I haven't got any of the QV which were printed on multiple crown CA paper during the reign of Edward VII. Bizarrely the only stamp with Edward VII's portrait on it (which I don't have) was issued in 1911, after his death. They seem to have been a bit behind the times in Jamaica

A few pictorials to finish

There are so many different overprints on the Strait Settlements stamps

Thanks for your encouragement which is always appreciated.

Not sure what next. I think that my BC collection has just about been exhausted. Plenty more to show but still to decide the running order which is supposed to be chronological. In the meantime you can have a (sideways) Arisaema
