I would discard covers like this at the earliest possible opportunity (along with the album sleeve) before the fungal rust infection get on to the rest of the covers. Many are already infected.

Thank you NigelC. Even with magnification and illumination, I was unable to make it out. Norvic will be relieved.
I've stopped looking now. Some of the covers are not First Day Covers, many of them don't have the full set of stamps, and the whole thread is a chronological mess. Sorry, but it's not my cup of tea any more.
I thought you weren't looking at this thread anymore. But as you have, I am sure Dr Waffle will appreciate your advice on his disease infested fdcs.

I apologise for the display of fungal rust encrusted F.D.C.s. One of the inescapable hazards of living in the Australian and especially Queensland, climate, with its summer heat and high humidity. Suggestions of how to treat and prevent it, within reason, would be most welcome.

Most of the affected covers date from before 1986, and had been in Australia for 10 years; plenty of time to be affected.

In the main the condition of your covers is good but as you admit there are some showing signs of fungal rust.

I note also there are a few with insect damage, stamp damage & other marks.

Is your collection of GB fdcs ongoing or is it something you no longer collect? If it is ongoing, are you looking for better examples to replace those which are bit worse for wear & looking for ones to fill the few gaps you have in the earlier part of your collection?

Do you have air conditioning at home?. It is refrigerated or evaporative? Evaporative is not good for stamps.

There are a few threads here on the Board that deal with rust. It may be worth your while to have a look there on how to protect your collections. :)

Thanks for the information BigSaint. I started collecting U.K.and other F.D.Cs in 1979 whilst in Traralgon. My mother and sister back in Belfast set up a standing account with Royal Mail, and when mum died, I took it over.

I bought a job lot of pre-1980 F.D.C.s from a stamp shop off Burke Street in 1981 to compliment the ones I was getting from the U.K.On retirement in 2015,, I had to cancel many O/S standing orders including the U.K.

However I still order, via the internet, F.D.C.s relating military history e.g. the recent DDay and VE day issues and others that interest me. James Bond, Star Wars and Game of Thrones, spring to mind.

I will search the Rust problem solutions on stampboards, as there are some 2000 F.D.C.s in the collection and we do not use air-conditioning(too expensive for age pensioners), only ceiling fans in every room and 24 solar panels.

I'm now looking because this response was flagged up in the notifications.

My advice was serious; the collection is otherwise a good one but there is the risk, as BigSaint has written.

As it happens most of the covers can be replaced quite cheaply (cheaper than face value in most cases) so if you do dispose of them your collection could still be maintained (as long as you also get new sleeves and albums).

If I can help, I will, but not until I unearth the boxes were the older FDCs are! I think they may be under a bed.
