Tomorrow, I will post the last of the 2016 Spanish Year Book Issues, followed by a chronological order of months of Issue. Then 10 x2016 Andorran Issues, followed by their chronological month of issue.

It is marvelous to get a linguistic input into these issues-not a single tongue put near a cheek! Thanks to RogerE, his inputs are very welcome.
I prefer to collect UK, British Commonwealth esp Pacific area ( not excluding West Indies/Canada ) and Western Europe. At the bottom of my zone of interest is Eastern Europe and communist countries.

Waffle, you are welcome!
With the aid of online resources, I can make the same response in the four languages of Spain:
Spanish: Eres muy bienvenido
Catalan: Benvingut
Galician: Es Benvido
Basque: Ez horregatik

Never mind Waffle, take heart from this piece of wisdom:
The perfect is the enemy of the good.
I find that often helps.

Congratulations on your diligent Spanish (with some Catalan included)!
When I found your summary posts, Google automatically came up with a window asking me if I wanted the page translated from Spanish to English ;)

The very act of transcribing the month names and the stamp subjects is a language-learning activity. It gets you actively paying attention to language details, familiarising you with those details, engaging with the language and making it more "functional" in your thinking. I bet you came away from the activity with a heightened sense of the language :D

At least I can now translate most of the months of the year. Some of the translations of the stamps descriptions may leave a great deal to be desired.

P.S. I've just come across a very recent post by cursus in the "Covid thread". It shows a cover from Andorra to Barcelona, which has just taken 20 days to arrive. The extra interest here is that the lovely Andorran stamps on the cover are from the French Postal Service, not the Spanish Postal Service as shown in the current thread.
https://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=89367&start=284

The distinction is the presence of the French word Postes identifying the French Postal Service, while the Catalan words Correus espanyoles identifies the Spanish Postal Service.

Actually the letter was posted in Sant Julià de Lòria, the first town in Andorra after the Andorra - Spain border. Just about 20 km from the Catalan town of la Seu d'Urgell. It seeems that, by mid June, Andorra Spanish PO was working yet as shown by this:
scan0033.jpg
So, it went throught France by using the Andorra French PO. Anyway, it reached me with a nice Andorra FDC.
I collect: Estonia 1990-1992 Postal History. Barcelona Postal History and postmarks. Catalan cinderellas. Botanical gardens. Ice creams on stamps. Used UK, Germany, Switzerland, Austria & Scandinavia.

That concludes the 2016 year book of Spanish and Andorran stamp issues. Next will be the 2011 and 2012 year books of Portugese stamps, Spain's Iberian neighbour. Some of their miniature sheets are works of art-stunningly beautiful. They start tomorrow.

Waffle, presumably you will start a new thread for Portugal 2011 and 2012.
Would you mind to add a link here to that new thread, please, once you've started it‽

Also, a note about Catalan. Your chronological list of Andorran stamps for 2016
lists the subjects in Catalan, but lists the months in Spanish/Castillian.
Wicked Waffle!

The names of the months in Catalan are:
Gener, febrer, març, abril, maig, juny,
juliol, agost, setembre, octubre, novembre, desembre.

For a listing of month names in Catalan, French, Italian, Spanish and Portuguese, check out the post at

A little reluctantly, I will briefly answer your question about language learning. I am not a professional linguist. Like nigelc, and others who contribute to the Stamps and Languages thread, I've had a long-standing interest in languages, from as far back as I can remember. No role models, just intrinsic. If I am right, early stamp collecting probably contributed to my language interests. My secondary school was in a rural community, where I can remember being told by a local resident: "Why would you learn French? You're never going to go to France!"*

My language knowledge is a mixture of self-taught, later school-taught, later additional studies not in my curriculum (but every opportunity taken up for access), and in middle age, even as a formal component of a graduate diploma which I did by correspondence while teaching abroad. I have always had the enthusiasm to learn languages from any source, such as acquaintances/friends with non-English backgrounds, time spent visiting or working in various countries, and self-motivated use of books (spontaneous purchases, or borrowed library books). Over time, it adds up to a diverse general knowledge of languages, but I'm always conscious that even though it has width, the depth is not great. I guess the motto is: The more you know, the more you realise you don't know.

*Footnote: With pleasure, I have used French in various parts of Canada, in Tahiti, more recently in France, and more recently still in New Caledonia. That's not the reason I learnt French, but it does put those recalled parochial attitudes into their proper perspective. ;)

Roger, that is a superb, not only, story, but also, life history. I did 6 years of French, 3 years of Latin and 1, compressed, of German( enough to recognise bahhoff/ausgang and eingang) Then when we arrived in Traralgon, we joined the Dante Allegheri school for 2 years of Italian. I,at least can read the menu and wine list and order gamberi, pollo. and Dov'e possibile mangiare bene in Italia.Gia.As well as Prosecco by the jug at a trattoria on the canal bank in Cannaregio. Did you like that-I can still remember most of it, even the teacher's name, Emilio. I would still like to learn an Iberian language to the point of, not necessarily being fluent, but being understood and being able to read a menu and paper, which I can do in French and Italian. Paris Match was required material in Frank Redhead's French class.

Thanks for your fine bedside manner Dr Waffle.

Perhaps I'll eventually add some more detail about that background in the
Stamps and Languages thread. In any case, I hope you continue to enjoy that
thread. There have been quite a few "Iberian" posts recently, so it's high time
I added some posts about languages from other places ;) Keep watching!
