Show your Jordan and Jordanian themes stamps and items

Post by Eli »

I don't have a lot from Jordan and about Jordanian themes, only few sets in my different collections. Since there is no thread about Jordan stamps, as far as I know, I start this one and hope members show the stamps and items they have from Jordan and stamps from all over the world show Jordanian themes.

Here is the first set from Jordan. It shows Jerash ("Pompeii of the East") antiquity from the Roman Empire period, issued on June 22, 1965:
Jerash’s “Golden Age” dates from the reign of the Roman Emperor Trajan (98-117 CE) who incorporated the city of Jerash into the new Roman province of Arabia in 106 CE. Located in close proximity to the province's capital of Bosra, Jerash profited from its prime location at the axes of several trade routes. Trajan, himself, is partially responsible for Jerash's boom in growth as he ordered the construction of new roads, including the Via Nova Traijana (Trajan's New Road), which connected Bosra to the Red Sea gateway city of Ailaon. Most of the structures at Jerash date from the second century CE. The Roman Emperor Hadrian (117-138 CE) stayed in Jerash during the winter of 129 CE, and this extended sojourn was celebrated with the construction of a triumphal arch that is known as "Hadrian's Arch." Jerash's wealth enabled an ambitious program of public works to be undertaken, including the construction of a new Temple of Artemis in the middle of the second century CE. (Source: www.ancient.eu)

Hussein Ben Talal, King of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan (1935-1999), issued by Israel on February 15, 2000. Design based on the original drawing of King Hussein by Omar Shelleh. King Hussein signed peace with Israel in 1994 after about 46 years of hostilities and wars between the two countries - Jordan and Israel.

Thanks, Fletches, for sharing these great stamps. Jordan issued many bird stamp sets but I think this one is the best of them (and very expensive).

In 1947, a year before of the British Mandate on Palestine was ended, when civil war between the Jewish community and the Arab community escalated (and led to the 1948 war), Jordan issued a set of tax stamps to raise donations for the Arabs of Palestine. Those stamps were overprinted in 1953 by Jordan with "Postage" and used as regular postage stamps. Here are three overprinted stamps:

Mosque in Hebron:

Omar Mosque, Jerusalem:

Jordan 1953 Palestine 2.jpg

This stamp value is in "Mils" (instead "Fils"), the British Mandate currency:

I am not sure I have a great deal from Jordan, however, I will always remember a stamp in my dads schoolboy collection

I dont have this set but it is these Jordan Pavilion New York World Fair 1964 stamps - so striking!

Thanks, Lundy, for sharing! Indeed, lovely set. I personally love the Jordanian stamp style of the 1950-60's. Here is another set from the same period: It is a set shows the Dead Sea, the lowest place on Earth, issued on September 23, 1965:

Dead Sea Scrolls, a collection of different texts discovered in Judea desert near the Dead Sea, many of them Jewish holy scriptures, written in Hebrew two millennium ago by Jewish sect called the Essenes:

Indeed, great set from the period Jordan issued engraved stamps. Here is one in high resolution shows the great engraving of it:

The Madaba Mosaic Map is part of a floor mosaic in the early Byzantine church of Saint George at Madaba, Jordan dates to the 6th century AD. The Madaba Map is a map of the Middle East and part of it contains the oldest surviving original cartographic depiction of the Holy Land and especially Jerusalem.

On April 23, 1978, Israel issued a souvenir sheet depicting the Madaba map to publicize the “Tabir78” national stamp exhibition held in Jerusalem, Israel in that year:

Petra is a Nabataean city, situated in Southern Jordan. It was an important crossroads between Arabia, Egypt and Syria-Phoenicia. Petra, called by the locals "The Rose City", is half-built, half-carved into the rock, and is surrounded by mountains riddled with passages and gorges. It is one of the world's most famous archaeological sites, where ancient Eastern traditions blend with Hellenistic architecture. In 1985, Petra was declared by UNESCO a World Heritage Site. In 2007, Petra was chosen as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.

"Petra - The Rose City", issued by Jordan on August 11, 1995:

Thanks, Lundy, for sharing this great cover!

The Via Dolorosa (Latin:"Way of Suffering") is a street within the Old City of Jerusalem, held to be the path that Jesus walked, carrying his cross, on the way to his crucifixion, and ultimately, his bodily resurrection from the dead three days later. It is marked by fourteen Stations of the Cross; five of them being inside the Church of the Holy Sepulchre.

Here is a set of stamps issued by Jordan September 14, 1966 depicting the fourteen stations of the Via Dolorosa:

Station 1 - Jesus is condemned by Pontius Pilate.
Station 2 - Jesus receives his Cross.
Station 3 - Jesus falls under the weight of the Cross.

jordan 1.jpg

Station 4 - Jesus meets his mother.
Station 5 - Simon of Cyrene helps Jesus to carry the Cross.
Station 6 - Veronica wipes the face of Jesus.

jordan 2.jpg

Station 7 - Jesus falls a second time.
Station 8 - Jesus speaks to the daughters of Jerusalem.
Station 9 - Jesus falls a third time.

jordan 3.jpg

Station 10 - Jesus is stripped of his garments.
Station 11 - Jesus is nailed to the Cross.
Station 12 - Jesus dies on the Cross.

jordan 4.jpg

Station 13 - Jesus is taken down from the Cross.
Station 14 - Jesus is laid in the tomb.

jordan 5.jpg

Jordan Via Dolorosa.jpg

Missing the SS of this set contains a 100 Fils stamp (same design as the 1 Fils) and the holy sepulchre in Jerusalem in the background.

Wonder how the stamps depicting the 14 stations of the Via Dolorosa went over in an Islamic country?

Anyway . . .

Below are pictured a set of stamps issued by Jordan in 2011 picturing the current crown prince: Crown Prince Hussein (born 1994).

We called into Aquba on our world cruise last year when it was still permissible to leave Australia. Finding the Post Office proved difficult, even with a map. Once there, they only had eight stamps and with limited English(his) and even less Arabic(mine), getting enough of the right denomination for cards and letters to Australia was a pantomime.

Not sure I would return although a previous cruise round the Red Sea(M.S.C.) included a visit to Petra-fantastic. Aquaba does however have a duty free shop, again difficult to find, with copious supplies of grog.

Officially, we were not supposed to bring alcohol back on board. We got some gin.and whiskey, went next door to McDonalds, where my wife visited the ladies to empty the grog into our plastic water bottles. She came out laughing like mad. The waste bin was overflowing with empty alcohol bottles. Great minds thought alike.
I prefer to collect UK, British Commonwealth esp Pacific area ( not excluding West Indies/Canada ) and Western Europe. At the bottom of my zone of interest is Eastern Europe and communist countries.

Admiral, during the 1960's, Jordan issued many sets show different attractive themes to sell for tourists like space flights, President Kennedy, Fauna and many Christian subjects like the Via Dolorosa set which was very popular among tourists visited Jerusalem (In year 1966, Jordan still controlled East Jerusalem). Many of the stamps were issued in different shapes like triangles and gold embossed rounded stamps to make them more attractive.

Last summer me and my daughter visited Aqaba and I know what your are talking about. They had only law values stamps and I had to stick the stamps on top of each others like in this postcard. BTW, the food was delicious....and very cheap!
