Fake handles, we do NOT want you here. You WILL get rumbled!

These boards are a cinch to use, but if BB's are new to you, here are a few basic tips for new users to help you settle in. How to post, edit, how to add photos or avatars etc. Who are the Board Moderators etc. Please feel free to ask questions or add suggestions yourself. Add threads here re any technical issues that might concern you.

Fake handles, we do NOT want you here. You WILL get rumbled!

Post by admin »

Fake handles - we do NOT want you here. And you WILL get rumbled - read here for more info!

A gentle overview of fake handles only started here to be a nuisance - I can and will find you and ban your handle and your ISP!

Just a little overview for info, of how sophisticated this phpBB software really is that I am using. These boards are used heavily by all kinds of groups of folks with common interests. The largest board has SEVENTEEN MILLION members:

http://rankings.big-boards.com/?filter=phpBB,all

This board below (from Holland) has the same look as ours, yet has near 50 MILLION posts;

http://www.bokt.nl/forums

So phpBB Admin software can handle the biggest boards, and has masses of features, that normal users do not see. It has so many bells and whistles attached to it behind the scenes, even after months of using it I am still finding my way.

What I see as Admin on the control console is phenomenal.

By the way - I can 105% guarantee you that all user passwords are NOT visible to Admin - that much you would know from other Bulletin Boards you have used. I have never seen them, or can never access them at any point.

But what I (and the 20 other members appointed as moderators) can see on EVERY post is a little box that tells us the actual ISP (internet address) that posted it. Very interesting. And EVERY IP that member has ever posted from. And if I click on any of those IP addresses it gives me an exact location of where it was posted from.

Of course lots of commercial sites offer that match anyway like:

http://www.ip-adress.com/

So if you paste in my IP address:

58.164.75.16

.... into that box on that site it tells you I am in Sydney Australia. Neat. You can even see an aerial photo of where I am typing this from!

Now for 99.999% of users, this will not be an issue for them - or Admin.

And when I or the 20 moderators here click on that little "IP" button on a post we think looks just a little weird or suspicious ..... guess what -- the software automatically displays any OTHER handles on this board that have posted from that same unique IP address. And when, and on what threads.

So when 3 apparently un-connected handles like "Rusted" of Scotland, "Perfed" from Kansas" and "Mutton" from Auckland are all actually living and posting from Cairns, even a dummy like me smells a rat!

However we all know "there is one in every crowd" and a few jackasses will even mess around with fun stamp boards. It has occurred already in a tiny way, and I quickly negated it without anyone else noticing.

No problem. I can ban any user name(s) and remove all their posts in a 5 second operation if I choose. I LOVE computers!

And in the next 5 second operation I can blanket ban that IP address from ever posting here again ..... they simply can't even access or see the site.

Any moderator can click a box on ANY post and it vanishes in a second. This can and does occur with spam and porno stuff etc and users ordinarily never even see that - it vanishes so fast.

I have no real issue with folks having 2 handles IF for a good and valid reason. for instance if Kevin Morgan wants to start one for Kevin Morgan and one for bidferret so as to post separately I'd have no issue whatever with that or anything similar. A good deal less typing than the current bidferret/Kevin Morgan handle!

The control panel has a few other VERY neat tricks too, that I will not go into here, but they are hard to beat. :D

As I outlined elsewhere I've made over 40,000 posts on travel boards over 7 years. I am a moderator on one, and on the member elected Board for another with 135,000 members. In short I know my way around these boards like the back on my hand. Whatever 'clever' thing anyone has even thought of I have seen, heard of, and know how to deal with it in seconds.

Just a friendly "heads - up" ... please stick to friendly posting about stamps and you will NEVER need to read this section!

In most of the cases the "Guest" posts are simply users who have posted and not signed in.

Here is one example yesterday of a genuine case of this:

http://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?t=120

Sometimes they notice they have done this, and sometimes not.

But we do log them. ;)

No way around that sadly on this software.

If you do it, post same text as your real handle via quick cut and paste and Moderators can later delete the "Guest" one.

Thanks for the tip - I did it the other day and had to give myself the Royal Order of the D*ckhead!

By the way, following on from the earlier discussion about users using multiple IDs...

...I use 2 different computers to login (one is Home, one is Work), hence you'll see my username with 2 different IP Addresses - presume this doesn't cause you any problems/issues (based on the lack of thunderbolts heading my way so far).

Keep up the good work - and many thanks from me for getting this off the ground!

Nope .. a lot of members do understandably post from home and work, and we do see the 2 (ormore) different IP's clearly.

What we also see is any OTHER handle that posts from either IP. :D

With auto log on thingy switched on, logging on is something I don't even think about.

It looked like the log on over the weekend that had the spam links in it were done by some sort of robot, is that likely?

OK .. yes they were deleted soon after. Thanks!

The Moderator team deletes about about 20 t0 30 spam posts a day. Most vanish before any member sees them as we have mods in all time zones.

You should consider volunteering to join the team as NZ is a good time zone we do not have covered!

I have also noticed that sometimes you log in and it actually DOESN'T log you in meaning you have to re-log in. It can be very annoying especially when you do not realize until AFTER you have posted. You may want to look into this glitch Glen as I am starting to think it is not just my computer.
Cheers skie

Gavin .. you are correct that is how the board controls are now set up.

However for a month or two in the period the posts above relate to, we did allow "Guests" to post. i.e. anyone could post and call themselves gavin-h or admin or whatever they chose to type in.

After we allegedly had infamous ebay con-man and Scads Hall Of Shame figure "joanne620" posting as a "Guest" that we could not verify, and other issues, we changed the settings so that no-one can now post here unless they are registered.

Seems to be working well. :D

Glen, or any other computer whiz,

Stating that you can identify someone is using home and work computers, at home we have three computers networked together and I sometimes use any of the computers to enter a post. Would the ISP be the same from any of these computers, or would there be a difference.

I presume you just have 1 internet service provider (ISP) for the network, so the answer is yes.

Remember the original thread is TWO years old.

With the loading of the brand new board software at Xmas 2008, the back end functionality was vastly improved.

Clemo - we can pretty much tell you what you had for breakfast these days. And even what brand cereal it was. ;)

The technology out there for all sorts of things these days is simply mind boggling.

I just updated my home security system this month, with stuff only the FBI had at their disposal a few years back!

I can be sitting at a hotel in New York and monitor in real time, 8 live cameras around the outside and inside of the house at will - rewind, zoom in, and set alarms etc. These things set off email alerts to 8 nominated addresses when triggered, and audio alerts.

Full run down here -

https://www.glenstephens.com/snjune09.html

Even in total darkness at 3am these things each with 45 x LED lights give sharp clear images.

Just to let you know so that you don't ban me. I will more than likely be posting from two IP Addresses. One will be my home, the other will be a Public Building with a Philatelic Library on site. You may or encounter other users from the Public Building.

Hope this helps.

I doubt it is an issue. I have likely more than 100 ip addresses on some 10 countries and 2 continents associated with my handle. With mobile devices that is becoming increasingly common.

A lot of us have dynamic IP addresses or log in at home and at an office, so that is not an issue.

When I worked in IT, my IP often showed as being from Frankfurt, Germany even though I was sitting at a desk near Blackpool, England because we used remote-access servers.

This old thread was set up in the earliest days of Stampboards and the warning was to prevent people impersonating other users etc.

I really don't think you'll have a problem, Mickl84, but thanks for considering this. 8)
