Impossible to post photos

Post by magpiez »

The stampboard wants images of stamps and I wanted to post one to try to get the variety identified BUT it is impossible to do BECAUSE imagur will ONLY work with mobile phones and I have no need for one so cannot provide a mobile number. So will have to give up on getting any help.

Imgur does not require a mobile phone.

Try dropping a photo to https://imgur.com/upload?beta and see what happens.

The opposite is true - the Imgur app will NOT allow you to get a link for posting here. And if you can't work imgur try imagebox

Don't give up, it is well worth the trouble to master it. I take it you have tried this:

http://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=53532

I never use my phone for Imgur.

I use

https://imgur.com

on my laptop. Following the instructions it works 95% of the time.

I never post photos on the internet having seen through a past job how people can capture and manipulate images and sometimes cause serious grief for the original owner or an innocent victim, Anyway when trying to register for imagur you MUST provide a mobile phone because they TEXT a code to you that you have to enter to activate the account. So not an option to use that. Someone I know used to post on some sort of photo site but that is now fee paying. Not keen on any sort of third party site but will suss out the viewfinder and any other options people trust.

magpiez is quite correct that Imgur does NOW require a mobile phone number (and email) to be provided when registering an account which must be a recent change.

Whilst it is not the preferred option here, you may try Imgbox https://imgbox.com/ as an alternative.

We'll refrain from digitally adding a moustache on Liz if that's a current Machin and telling the police it was you wot did it.

Flippant comment aside, I presume you're planning on posting a picture of a postage stamp rather than anything which personally identifies you? :)

Is there any need to register an account, Chris?

I've signed out, cleared all imgur cookies, and https://imgur.com/upload?beta still works fine to upload a picture "anonymously".

Yes, that would be a work-around.

But, with my mod hat on...

This method should only be used for an occasional image which doesn't need to be resized; and obviously it must not be deleted after uploading.

An account is always the preferred method, hence the option to use Imgbox which only requires an email to Register.

I've raised a support ticket on imgur to (try to) resolve this - not everybody has a mobile phone.

However, in the UK if you enter a landline number when a mobile is required, the text message is relayed by voice to your landline. That may be a workaround.

Ask a friend nearby, use their phone number. It's just a once only code isn't it?

Response - may not be what you want to hear:
Imgur support wrote:We value the safety and security of our community, which is why we now require phone verification when you create an account. Phone verification helps protect against spam and abuse that hurts our community and our business.

However, you can bypass this requirement by using Facebook to register for your account on desktop
And you don't have to use Facebook at all afterwards.

magpiez, I've found imgbox.com to be very convenient and user friendly, since having trouble with IMGUR tech issues. You don't even need to sign up for an account. God only knows how long this will last, for free!

Maybe give this one a go, if you find the other websites troublesome? Check out the Global Administrator's link above for instructions. I've also had trouble with uploading images since Photobucket died and I'm supposed to be a millennial! So, if I can do it, so can you!

Image

1. Go to the weblink for imgbox.com.

2. Click on 'Upload images' and select the file on your computer.

3. A bunch of drop-down boxes appear. Select 'Family Safe Content' & '800 x 800 pixel (resized)' for the thumbnail.

4. Click on 'Start upload'.

5. When the page appears with your image, you'll see three types of URL links at the top of the page. The one on the far top right is the BB-Code you need for posting images here on Stampboards.

6. When inserting the link, just make sure you delete the 'S' in 'HTTPS' so it becomes 'HTTP'.

7. Check out admin's link for the same instructions with screenshots to help you along the way. 8)
