Jean,

The latest entry in the catalogue thread belongs to discussion thread. Could you move it there?

Hmm, probably after dinner tonight, around 7-8 pm EST. I also have to do the draws for my Lunar New Year giveaway tonight.

However, not sure you could follow it anyway because I usually do the entire update in one "edit session". I can email you later with the steps I use.

Hi Kimmo

The index is updated. Here are some notes:

1. I deleted Belti's Belarus post and pointed the index to Victor's post
2. Belti posted the Azermarka Azerbaijan catalogue twice (Feb 5 and 16), I deleted the second post
3. I edited the BiH posts
4. I grouped Denmark/Faroes/Greenland and Finland/Aland together
5. I grouped the conflict zones of former Soviet Union together (there is a listing under Moldova that includes Transnistria - I'll let you decide if you want to add that under this heading as well)
6. You may want to edit some of the entries that appear identical, for example the Azerbaijan and Belarus listsings - I'll leave that to you

Jean

P.S. I'll send you an email with some instructions on how to update the index. :D

Re: Discussion on Free internet stamp catalogues

Belti,

Thank you for adding many new catalogues to my thread.

Could you try to get the catalog issuing year to the first paragraph? For most online catalogues that is 2000 or later (the Internet as we know it today didn't exist much before that). For scanned old catalogues I use the year of publishing of the printed catalogue, as the content is reproduced without altering it. If I cannot see anything, for online catalogues I have used '2010?'. If there is the date of the last update I use that if nothing else is given. For online catalogues that are continually kept up-to-date I use current. This year helps users to know how up-to-date the information is in the catalogue (does it include latest discoveries etc.).

In the second paragraph use the years covered in the catalogue. Often, with the catalogues that are current at the time of issuing, it is the same as the last year covered but for 'historical' catalogues, including dead countries, that is hardly ever same.

As you may notice, yesterday I editied almost half of the years in the first paragraph.

Thanks, Kimmo

You're welcome Belti and Kimmo.

A thought occurred to me this morning - it might be useful to indicate which links in the index are for the country's Postal Administration. You could either substitute "Postal Admin" for "Stamp Catalogue" in the listing, or mark the index listing with an "*" at the end.

Similarly you could indicate online retailers with a different symbol like "^".

Just a suggestion. It might be good to include that information in the actual post as well. :D

I think it's reasonable for listings like SMOM that could be associated with more than one country. I didn't check the Moldova and Transnistria listing to see if it could be split into 2 specific links.

I agree with you Jean. In fact most of my first posts in this thread were catalogues from the country's Postal Administration. While there are other links from retailers website, there are also links from collectors, for example one which comes to mind is the New Hebrides link which I posted a little earlier today.

I like the idea of indicating whether catalogs are from postal admins, retail shops or collectors. Maybe something to add to the first paragraph. Since we are discussing the template for catalog listing I would like to suggest that maybe an indication like 'country specific' versus 'specialized' might also have added value in understanding the nature of an entry.

I'm open for all suggestions. Regarding where that information should go, I would place it in the second or fourth paragraph. I would keep the first paragraph to the country, which is not always evident from the catalogue name. That way people can recognize faster the potential usefulness of the catalogue. That way this thread is not totally dependent of the index.

johnrcrow,

Thank you for providing information on these 4 Germany related catalogues. Also, I'll be posting scanned old catalogues here at the rate of about 1 per day (that doesn't take too much time to do and keeps this thread active for quite some time). Once I'll get to Germany there may be something of interest also for you. In my opinion there are some rather nice old catalogs which are compareable with Michel in their level of detail. So, keep checking every now and then where am I going with my posts.

Belti,

Do you mind if I edit your Åland Islands entry? That entry points to web shop of Posten Åland while the same website contains their stamp catalogue (which starts from 1984, the beginning of Åland issues, instead of from 1999 in the web shop). I can add that catalogue if you want to keep the webshop entry, but being the same site (and one can always find the web shop), I don't see the point.

I did the editing, but as I noticed the online shop goes further than the catalogue, I decided to keep it, too. Now it has two links, but as the site is the same and so is the country I think it doesn't confuse too much. However, I think such should be avoided if it doesn't give any added value.

Belti,

Thank you for asking. As the thread is for Free catalogues, they just excluded themselves from this listing. However, if they have free sample pages that are useful in your opinion, you can post them here with a note that full access is available with paid subscription.

Hi Kimmo
I spend several hours every day working on a database of engraved stamps. Your thread has been the most valuable resource I've found for ages. For instance, I've just gone back over the Russian stamps that I had no details for and found all the designers on the catalogue you indicate. Thank you for all the work you have done and thanks also to all those who have contributed.

Hi John,

I am very happy to hear you have find this thread useful. I'll keep adding here resources (and hopefully others will too) to make this thread even better and more useful. A nice thing about you finding information from the catalogues is that it will be recycled directly back to this thread as your engraved stamps site is listed in this thread, too. :)
On my and my "team's" behalf I want to thank you for your nice and encouraging feedback.
