Hello troy and bazza4338. I trust your expertise on the "4½d violet KGV with inverted small multi wmk".
But for the uninitiated among us (myself included), would you please tell us what are the telltale signs that show you the stamp depicted is a forgery? Interested, not criticising... "Does not exist" = "not previously known" does not seem to be sufficient, otherwise there would never be any new discoveries.

How do you suppose he made that fake inverted watermark stamp? Bleaching a real stamp with the correct WM and printing it with a fake 4.5d image? Kind of like a low-rent Sperati? Would explain the "mushy" detail on the stamp.

would you please tell us what are the telltale signs that show you the stamp depicted is a forgery?

1. The stamp simply does NOT exist. Period. Does EVERYONE who looks at FakeBay live in some alternate Universe of Stupidity? And simply blindly assumes the conga line of crap they see is real?

2. The stamp is not perf 12.5 x 13.5 as all except FakeBay Bunnies and bidders can clearly see. Even on S/Multi Perf 14, which this is, it does not exist Inverted EITHER. A total fabrication.

3. If it WERE genuine and new find, it clearly would appear at a REAL stamp auction, not a stamp cesspool like FakeBay, from a seller of total fakes with only 120 feedbacks start price $10 - and the estimate would be $50,000. Which it would fetch.

4. It is on FakeBay. Assume ANYTHING pricey is forged there from amateurs that has no certificate, or is not sold by a real dealer and member of a leading trade association.

5. It does not exist - he photoshopped this, and one of his endless shill bidders "bought" it via the guarantee of shill bidding - "private auctions". eBay MUST close these accounts, not just suspend them for a week.

5. It is offered by a serial faker - everything he sold this month is a total and utter forgery - as even you hopefully can see -

Yes, the photoshopping shows down the right hand side for example - a different greyer inner edge following the perforations that almost blends in, but not quite.

fake.PNG

It doesn't exist, so never gets mailed, and the buyer's funds get withdrawn by the forger from Paypal asap.

Eventually the buyer claims non-delivery and Paypal ends up out of pocket when they try to clawback the $ from the seller's now empty bank account.

I mean what kind of brain-dead MORON looks at this deliberately fuzzy fabricated mess and assumes for one second it is real?

Lots of them, judging from the price obtained.

https://www.ebay.com.au/sch/sl_143_44/m.html?item=2244459609 ... 6732.m1684

Holes are clearly fake, and entire base of the stamps is added.

Thanks for the replies to my request about that purported "KGV 4½d violet with inverted small multi wmk".

There are three types of evidence being provided, and together they give us a very convincing answer:

(1) The intrinsic evidence of photoshopping of the image, highlighted by gregbear61, is a strong telltale. In addition, it seems that this image shows gauge 14 perforations, not the claimed 13½ (but that requires you to have a trained eye for assessing the gauge of perforations in an image, a high level of experience/expertise).

(2) When that is coupled with all the other reported instances of dodgy items offered/sold(?) by the seller, it fits into the larger picture of serial image manipulation for fraud. It is the supporting evidence about the other activities of the "seller" that is the first tipoff this item is also likely to be dodgy, and prompts us to go looking for intrinsic evidence in the image itself.

(3) Add in the reality checks that (a) no example of the claimed variety is known to experts; (b) any example of such a variety would merit a certificate of expertisation; (c) a verified example would fetch a very high price (perhaps $50K) if offered by a reputable auction house.

Thanks for the combined responses. I'm now much clearer on the basis for identifying this item as fraudulent.

The intrinsic evidence of photoshopping also gives us a much better understanding of how the image was created, and the conclusion that no physical stamp of that description actually exists.

Given that this guy has been around for years and seldom gets negative feedback, I doubt he is running the "list non-existent item, get paid, and disappear" scam. He's sending the winner *something*, though in the case of the 4.5d, it's not clear what. Usually it's pretty obvious -- fake overprint or "OS" punctures, or something run off on a laser printer and "aged". Faking a watermark seems a little advanced for him.

He recently used ID ocean-5002 to add 3 bogus "buyer" feedbacks onto the account for ID el73_28 . Hopefully that should be enough to get both those accounts shut down. I have reported this direct to the shill bidding team.

All listings for northgate14, sl_143_44, el73_28 and ocean-5002 are now gone. I can’t remember if they all had active listings, but northgate and ocean certainly did. Another minor victory ...but disappointingly, they are still not NARUd. ID stampomtrad (previously omramtrading99) is still selling, but only has one active listing.

It seems likely that he has switched, or will soon switch, to other new IDs.

I have sent a report direct to the shill bidding team, asking them to check the 30 items recently sold by this ID premiumequ-88 for shill bids from his other known accounts.

At the moment, there don't seem to be any live listings on any of his accounts - which makes me again suspect that he must be using others ...

Below are the IDs that I'm using for my reports and which appear to be still current - i.e. they produce a "0 listings" response from the Ebay advanced search, rather than a NARU or "ID not found" response. If I have omitted any live account, please let me know.

Not to butt-in but I thought this relevant to spotting forgeries with overprints. It's not just Aussie & NZ.

There are SO MANY sellers with FORGERIES it must be overwhelming for anyone. However, FakeBay would rather collect $'s on the sale instead of actually looking at their listings. They have NO EXPERTS.

As an aid to spotting fakes, TONER INK is being used on Chinese printers to "mimic" actual overprints of all kinds. With a loop & in direct sunlight, toner ink will shimmer with goldish / copper speckles as the remnants of the polymers & metals of the process.

Toner Ink 3 (2).JPG

Additionally, toner ink can be scraped-off with a razor knife, slowly & carefully.

Voiziers FAKE INK 3.jpg

Some sellers are still using forged signatures too. E.G. "Richter" shown here is fake on top as compared to the original below. Not that anyone trusts his name anymore. I've seen this show up on several occasions when the listing says "signed, WWII."

Richter Sig Fake vs Genuine.jpg

Most every overprint I've encountered has been a forgery from FakeBay. I just don't trust any overprint coming from this unwatched platform.

Courtesy is contagious.

Wow, someone at Ebay was fast on that one! I only sent the report on ID la_4211 about 36 hours ago. I have just sent another message thanking them for taking that one down, and reporting the new ID philatel_12.

But what I don't understand is why they banned ID la_4211 which has made no sales yet, but still have not de-registered the other live accounts - including ID ocean-5002 which blatantly left three bogus shill feedbacks for ID el73_28 . Perhaps Nassar got careless and didn't disguise the IP address for la_4211.

Maybe I am an idiot. How does he manage to get the GT (not CT as in his heading) under the cancellation. The date is right, the rouletted stamp is right as is the colour of the overprint with square dots. His close up of the stamp on the cover is not all that fuzzy......or is the entire a concoction. Clever if it is. Obviously I am no expert on the SA Departmentals but would love to know how this was done. I imagine Goolway Tramway is a rare overprint.....

I checked on the map where both Goolwa and Tamunda were before I posted and saw the large distance between them in any event. But does this mean the whole entire is manufactured?

Removing the stamp which was there, replacing with a forged overprint then applying a fake Adelaide cds?

Re: Current accounts and scams of the Sydney Stamp forger on ebay

Simply a forged overprint on a real 2d stamped cover.

Tanunda is Barossa Valley, a good distance the OTHER direction north from Adelaide which is North of GOOLWA.

NEVER assume what you see in a fuzzy scan is real. :!:

Overprints on black cancels pass muster most times. Hard to tell from a SCAN.

Or perhaps you feel this stamp was printed OVER the cancel!

Well spotted. buhay_ko1 is another ebay faker account

Let's load up the FUZZIEST, crappiest, scans that ebay will allow to disguise the forged GT overprint -

The 2d cover posted above by A Helmich was purchased by our ebay forger buhay_ko1 from a reputable New Zealand dealer who has had it for sale for quite some time, several years I believe, with an asking price on ebay at around A$40.

The basic cover with 2d stamp is contemporary, HOWEVER, the red G.T. overprint and O.H.M.S. overprint are both fresh to the cover.

The forger may have just touched up the postmark over the overprint.

That might be the easy part of the concoction, the overprint itself would be more difficult to apply.

A $5 rubber stamp like the fake OHMS header. The Pale red it makes it appear the cancel is over it. Fooled derbyboi, who has 5000 miles more philatelic knowledge than the average ebay Bunny. 8-)

Lets all report this new faker account buhay_ko1 please, and have it banned before it makes any sales.

Greg

I wasn't taken in, I know nothing about them. I was just wondering how it was achieved. It seems an awful lot of trouble if the original cover was $40 and it is on at $47 lol. Hopefully forging doesn't pay.

Yes, I know you weren't taken in. It's a fair enough question to ask as how it may have been concocted.

Sending in report. Good to see he's having a bad run of late with NARUs

northgate14 is back listing 100 items:

https://www.ebay.com.au/sch/northgate14/m.html?item=39333494 ... 7675.l2562

The usual run of overprints and rubbish. A week ago the listings cleared but the account wasn't NARU'ed

If you look at the close-up, the red "G" appears to be over the "U" in the date of the postmark.
