A client pointed out this absolute SHOCKER, that was auctioned yesterday by Leski.

Very crudely re-perforated on THREE sides, but not mentioned. ALL real dealers and auctions MUST be able to see this was a re-perf, and have a DUTY to note it up front. No excuse for offering such mutilation with no comment, from ANYONE professional. Then if anyone bids, it is at their choice.

I sell SOUND copies for around this figure.

Some brainless cretin is being invoiced about $400 for this dog after buyer and shipping fees are added. I'd pay about $100 as a space-filler if it were offered to me.

Just found this thread. It never ceases to amaze me how bold and uninformed many (most?) eBay sellers are about describing the faults or lack thereof of the stamps they are peddling.

However, this submission is not really about that but about a re-perfed stamp that I have come to like quite a bit. It is from United States ~1870 and was engraved and printed by the National Banknote company -- Scott 148. Tough to find a nice used one that is centered with good color and no faults.

This one was described as re-perfed at bottom and it is. I would also say re-perfed at right and top. Only the left side looks original to me. But I would welcome any opinions. But the color and lack of any other faults just makes me like this one every time I see it. It is also known as a large banknote and I like this series of stamps a lot. I paid less than $5 for this about a year ago. I consider it a bargain.

It is a great portrait of Lincoln (assinated five years earlier) and a face free cancel. Below it is the same variety sold by Siegel for $8K. This is my third best example but I keep wanting to promote it. Go figure.

Top one all 4 sides. Siegel one for $8000 also re-perf at top.

Perhaps it had a dodgy PSE GRAYDEAD Cert?

I'm no expert on US dues. What do people think about the perfs at left on this one?

519's are expensive, so some folks make their own. Not typical of this seller, but should have been noticed.

really interesting topic. Learned a lot by just reading a few pages. I will probably never get stamps that are worth re-perforating but the information and your explanations are great motivation to learn more.

I shouldn't laugh, I have more then enough re-perfs in my collection but
that right hand side, I could use that to saw down a tree.
My mission: To get one decent example of every single Queen Victoria stamp. ( minus a few impossible to get. )

Not being experienced in this area, this has been a very useful thread. I felt pleased with myself when the image first scrolled into view - perfs at the bottom clearly all over the place/size. Am I right ? Scrolled down a bit further and read the text ... what, THREE sides !? D'Oh ! It was only when I scrolled up and down - perfs on the left are in line with those on the right, tick, ... but wait, perf holes are a different size !

So what would help in these various posts is just a brief sentence as to why they are wrong would be useful in educating us numpties.

Having said that, .....

Holy crap, even I can spot that one ! There are certain more expensive items I wont buy via Ebay because I'm not good at spotting things like re-perfed, re-gummed, forged overprint, etc and so if I really wanted one I'd therefore go to an established professional source but this thread has somewhat dented my confidence in them!

My well known views on the wide incompetence at Spink and stamps are well-founded it seems.

Even the ebay spivs would spot this shocker.

It is of course no usual auction at Spink . It is a 'timed auction' online only and am I the only one thinking tactics far more akin to ebay than large public auction house.

Far from alone though .

Being new to all this, I've been reading this thread and thinking on the first couple of pages "OK, I think I see what they mean."

Then we get this, er, beauty. Perhaps a drunken swan got hold of a nailgun to do this?
