Does your club do Zoom stamp displays in these COVID times?

Post by colinscovers »

Hi

I am program secretary for Leeds PS. What was planned is on the attached link.

https://leedsps.org.uk/programme/

Having managed to hold one actual meeting, the changes to the restrictions in the UK for coronavirus resulted in our venue saying we could hold no further meetings in their premises so have returned to Zoom meetings.

Some of our planned speakers are unable to do an online version which means I may have to look at filling some evenings.

I wondered if there is anybody willing and able to do a display via Zoom for us. Whilst we have not done a one person evening yet we are thinking that it would be about 30/40 sheets so not anywhere near a full display of 160 sheets .

If you are able, we can share screen to allow you to operate the display your end or you could send us scans of the items or some other format and we can then control what is on screen and you just talk.

We are all still learning!

The meetings are held at 7.30 UK time which obviously will rule some out.

If you are a society we can do a reciprocal "society visit" with say three people talking about a few covers or I could see if anyone is able to do a full online display.

If you are interested, I am only collecting details at the moment but may need one for 13h October. If you can let me have details about your display and how many sheets you would want to show that would be great either on this thread or just email me.

Many Thanks

Colin

What a cool idea, and it is reality in this COVID world - sadly.

I am sure someone here can offer to assist. :)

Colin

I would love to help you out but 7.30pm your time is 4.30am here so that makes it a little tough.

I was due to give a display at Brighton Philatelic Society next month on English horse racing but when Premier Daniel Andrews closed down everything in Victoria, work on that display stopped too.

Instead it is currently being put on Stampboards:

If you become really desperate & you think Australian Horse Racing would be of interest to your members then I think I have something that would be suitable.

I'm doing a Zoom display of "Philately in the USA: The Early Years" for Cambridge PS on the 7th, planned to be about 50-60 Powerpoint slides.

If some version of that might suit, we can discuss it off board? (You have my email address -- Maurice Buxton.)

If you sign up for zoom, isn't there a way of recording your presentation to then just be "played" to the viewers later?

Yes -- you can start a meeting, click the record button, then go through the presentation. When you end the meeting, you get the option to convert the recording to MP4 format. You don't actually have to have anyone else in the "meeting". If you have suitable software installed you can also edit that recording to remove any bits that needed "retakes".

The disadvantage of this for a society presentation is simply that you can't interact with the presenter to give a vote of thanks, ask questions about the display etc because they're not actually in the meeting. This may or may not be a problem depending on the society and the presenter.

I too need the interaction. Last year one of the local clubs, where my cousin is President, asked me to do a 20 minute talk. Put it in a powerpoint presentation & had it down pat at 20 minutes.

Interaction with the audience & it went for an hour and 20 minutes.

Hi Colin,

Since I provisionally agreed at York to do a presentation next season, I can't really say no, can I

Whilst I don't have one ready, I can put a Powerpoint version together if you are interested based upon my Cancellations of GB (1840 to 1855) which is an updated and expanded version of

http://www.gbimperf.org/html/exhbit4.html

With regards to timing, I could do a presentation from December onwards - due to current work constraints.

Chris.

Hi

As an update Maurice did a very good and professional display to the Leeds PS last night. This was a display we would never have seen in "normal" times due to the distances between us and shows that there are benefits and changes coming out of these times. Thank you Maurice for your time and efforts.

We are having a virtual "visit" from Stockport PS in November and then doing a reciprocal "visit" to them. At each one there will be short ( 15 minutes) displays from 3 or 4 members similar to how a normal visit would work. However we can now engage with any society and not be constrained by distance and the winter months.

We have got a potential "visit" to Cambridge in the pipeline. They are 162 miles away which takes going up to 3 hours to get to so would never have been a possibility and gives us the chance to see new material.

Chris, sorry for not coming back to you but you are on my potential display list. We are ok now to February and will see how things are then but I think Zoom meetings will still be needed and going forward possibly part of a blended ( a common word now) program of displays.

Leeds are setting up a list of members who are prepared to do virtual displays either as part of a team or individually . If you need a speaker for a future meeting of your society please email and I will provide a list when done.

Moderators. Would it be worth altering the title of the thread to All things Zoom meetings for Society displays? so others may wish to promote their societies and speakers?

Colin

We had our venue in Essendon tell us that the venue will not be available until next year at the earliest as they couldn't do a "deep clean"between different meetings and that is what the Government is requiring.

So last Thursday I setup the first Zoom Meeting for the Essendon and Broadmeadows Philatelic Society. After a few small hiccups the meeting went well. I did a presentation based on the Berlin Private Post used at the end of WWII. There were questions and answers right through the presentation and I recorded the session to see how it looked to others.

What a great idea to share the passion across the world and across the country going forward. We could arrange to have experts in a variety of fields deliver presentations from their own homes and the possibilities are huge.

I have also been thinking about "Video Stamp Sales" as an option for a session in the alternate fortnight between the monthly meetings.
Always interested in trading German material especially post war period.
