Australia Post fdc for Military Aviation with cachet featuring the RAAF Roulettes cancelled with RAAF Laverton national fdi pictorial postmark featuring a Hawker F18 Hornet (APM#28900) - 26th February 1996

The Roulettes are the Royal Australian Air Force's formation aerobatic display team. They provide about 150 flying displays a year, in Australia and in friendly countries around the Southeast Asian region. The Roulettes form part of the RAAF Central Flying School (CFS) at RAAF Base East Sale, Victoria.

In 1970, the Roulettes were formed to celebrate the RAAF's 50th anniversary to be held throughout the year of 1971. The Roulettes first air show was at Point Cook in Dec 1970.

Australia Post fdc for Military Aviation with cachet featuring the RAAF Roulettes cancelled with RAAF Williams - Laverton pictorial postmark featuring a Hawker F18 Hornet (APM#27670) - 26th February 1996
Australia Post fdc for Military Aviation with cachet featuring the RAAF Roulettes cancelled with RAAF Williams - Laverton pictorial postmark featuring a Hawker F18 Hornet (APM#27670) - 26th February 1996

This postmark was introduced on 1st March 1995 & replaced a postmark of similar design of Point Cook.
This postmark was introduced on 1st March 1995 & replaced a postmark of similar design of Point Cook.

RAAF Williams (ICAO: YMPC) is a Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) military air base set across two locations, at Point Cook and Laverton, located approximately 20 kilometres south-west of the Melbourne central business district in Victoria. Both establishments previously existed as separate RAAF Bases (RAAF Base Point Cook and RAAF Base Laverton) until 1989 when they were amalgamated to form RAAF Williams. The name was chosen in honour of Air Marshal Sir Richard Williams, the 'father' of the RAAF.

RAAF Williams, Point Cook is the birthplace of the Royal Australia Air Force and is the oldest continually operating military airfield in the world. Since 1994 RAAF Williams (Point Cook) has been the home of RMIT Flight Training.

RAAF Williams, Laverton is the third oldest RAAF base, being built in 1925 at the same time as RAAF Base Richmond, which was opened slightly before Laverton. Located approximately seven kilometres from Point Cook, Laverton is the home of Headquarters Air Force Training Group (formerly Training Command).

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RAAF_Williams

Phoenix says the Laverton R.A.A.F. P.O. opened on 1/6/1938 & became an on LPO 31/7/1995.

Point Cook PO opened circa 1926, was renamed Point Cook R.A.A.F. P.O. on 1/7/1940 & closed on 7/5/1993.

A new Point Cook PO was opened on 4/8/2005.
Point Cook R.A.A.F. P.O. Renamed from Point Cook PO 1/7/1940; closed 7/5/1993.

This explains why I didn't obtain a Point Cook postmark for this issue. :)

Australia Post fdc for Military Aviation with cachet featuring the RAAF Roulettes cancelled with Moorabbin Vic pictorial postmark featuring a bi-plane aircraft (APM#21010) - 26th February 1996

Note the postmark has the Moorabbin postcode 3189, rather than the Moorabbin Airport postcode 3194.
Note the postmark has the Moorabbin postcode 3189, rather than the Moorabbin Airport postcode 3194.

Moorabbin (Harry Hawker) Airport (IATA: MBW, ICAO: YMMB) is a general aviation airport for light aircraft located in between the southern Melbourne suburbs of Heatherton, Cheltenham, Dingley Village and Mentone. The airport grounds are treated as their own suburb, and share the postcode 3194 with the neighboring suburbs of Mentone, Parkdale & Mordialloc. With a total of 274,082 aircraft movements, Moorabbin Airport was the second busiest airport in Australia for the calendar year 2011.

The airport opened in December 1949. Originally the intent was to name the airport "Mentone" but this was abandoned after a potential clash with the then French airport in Menton. Similarly, Cheltenham was discarded due to similarities to the Gloucestershire Airport near Cheltenham in South West England. The name comes from the nearby (but not neighboring) suburb of Moorabbin, postcode 3189. The airport was renamed to Moorabbin (Harry Hawker) Airport on 22 January 1989, after pioneering Australian aviator Harry George Hawker, on the centenary date of Hawker's birth.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moorabbin_Airport

Now you ask why did I obtain this postmark for my Military Aviation fdcs when this airport had nothing to do with the RAAF? Simple, I used to drive past the Moorabbin 3189 post office on my way to & from work & it has a bi-plane on the postmark, so why not. :D

Would it be possible for 'Big Saint' or other knowledgeable person from Brighton Philatelic Society,
To either confirm or not whether the 1970 Cover produced by the Brighton Philatelic Society with the attached label "Exhibition Bripex 70" in red and blue (as displayed on Page 1 of this post) is actually a Cinderella attached to the cover or is the label embedded and part of the cover?

Thank you,

Hi there Top Hat

Thanks for your query. I would describe them as red & blue labels that were affixed to the covers.

The Brighton cancels were used for the Exhibition with blue labels for the first day (25th September 1970) & red labels for the second day (26th September 1970). As the post office was closed on Sunday 27th September 1970 there were no official covers for the last day.

Going back to the Philatelic Exhibition Brighton Vic (BRIPEX) - 3rd to the 5th September 1953, I thought I should show the entry in Colleen Woolley's Oz Pictormarks:

Philatelic Exhibition Brighton Vic (BRIPEX) - 3rd to the 5th September 1953 from OZ Pictormarks

Note the reference to Item 3 - "Unknown number of certificates stamped & cancelled with APM #1020 & signed by BPS President (G Trask) & Secretary (Ern Allitt).

I knew I had these but couldn't find them at the time so I show them now:
