This Gala & Display is in lieu of last year's one, which was to celebrate the 70th Anniversary of Brighton Philatelic Society.

So I thought I might add here some of my collection of Brighton Philatelic Society souvenir covers:

Philatelic Exhibition Brighton Vic (BRIPEX) - 3rd to the 5th September 1953.

BRIPEX registered souvenir fdc cancelled Philatelic Exhibition Brighton pictorial postmark (APM #1020) - 3rd September 1953 (first day of use) to Coburg Vic

Collen Woolley of Aust Pictormarks writes that the Exhibition was opened in the Brighton Town Hall by the Director of Posts & Telegraphs, Mr N Strange. She adds there was a slight variation in the 2 datelines. One where the 3 in the dateline sloped back (APM#1020) & the other which did not (APM#1021)

Colleen states there 17,522 ordinary cancels & 850 registered. I am not sure how that works as the registration labels I show above range from 0043 to 2570.

The covers were produced in three colour combinations & mostly used the 3½d Young Farmers stamps which were issued on 3rd September 1953, the first day of the exhibition:

Brown Town Hall with green print (QEII Coronation stamps) - 3rd September 1953 to Caulfield Vic

One thing I have been wanting to check is how BPS covers were used at places other BRIPEX on the first day of issue. I have been wanting to check the Club's minutes of the time on this matter but they have been with the Club's historians who have been updating the official club history for it's 70th Anniversary.

The BRIPEX '70 Exhibtion to celebrate the Society's 21st Birthday was officially opened at 7.30pm on Friday 25th September 1970 by former Pick A Box Quiz champion Mr Barry Jones MA LLB & was attended by over 450 people at Brighton Town Hall.

The Exhibition Committee has obtained from the Postmaster-General's Department a special slogan postmark cancellation.

Two covers with add-on cachets, in two different colours were designed & were available, one for the 25th (blue) & the other for the 26th (red).

BRIPEX '70 Souvenir Covers in red cancelled with BRIPEX 70 Philatelic Exhibition Brighton Town Hall Sept 25 - 27th 1970 machine slogan cancel - postmarked at South Melbourne 1st September 1970 on Grasslands Congress 5c stamp (first day of use at South Melbourne)

Why South Melbourne, no one seems to know.

These covers were done by Eric Lyon (BPS President 1971/72) & Ted Brooke (BPS Life Member 1971) & come from Ted Brooke's Estate. They are said to be proof cancels.

Seems like an early use of the BRIPEX cover for reasons unknown.

I wonder why the Club gave up it's PO Box at Brighton. :?

Colleen Woolley of Oz Pictormarks writes that the postmark shows the facade of the former church & hall that was to become (& at the time of writing is still) the home of the Brighton Philatelic Society & a facsimile of an early "barred" cancel.

Of course Brighton's barred numeral was 19.

Colleen continues with the opening being performed by the Minister of Posts & Telegraphs, the Hon A A Staley, who commented that the word philately came from two Greek words - 'philo' meaning lover or fond of & 'ateleia' meaning free of payment or tax. He added that a more literal translation could be "a lover of tax avoidance schemes".

Two little stories in relation to the purchase of the building:

1. Auction day, one member, John McNabb, was put in charge of bidding under the instructions of the Committee. He was a member of the Australian Army Reserve & turned up at the auction in his Army uniform. The Greek Orthodox Church were also keen to buy the property but dropped out the bidding thinking John was bidding on behalf of the Army with unlimited funds.

2. Rather than the Army providing funds for the purchase it was a well to do family of Brighton who made a large donation to enable the Club to acquire the property.

BPS Souvenir cover (green cachet) postmarked with 50th Anniversary of Brighton Philatelic Society pictorial postmark (APM#33090) - 13th August 2000, last day of event

Colleen Woolley of Oz Pictormarks writes that the Brighton Philatelic Society was formed in 1950 & in it's 50th year had over 400 members. (At it's height it had over 550 & from memory in 2000 had about 450.)

For the celebration the Society produced a "P" stamp with a tab of Bri-Phil house. It was the 1st time a building had been used by anyone on one of these tabs. The tab was used in conjunction with the "Celebrate 2000" hologram stamps.

Colleen continues it is believed that a maximum of 400 covers were cancelled at Bri-Phil House over the weekend. but I can assure you it was more than that.

Colin Dunn of the Philatelic Bureau was to come down & do all the postmarking but shortly before the event he became ill & Australia Post were unable to send a replacement. I am not sure how it happened but I was volunteered to become postmaster for the weekend.

The Committee had decided that each member would receive a cover free so I postmarked 450 covering the 3 days for all the members. The night before each day I postmarked about 100 covers for next day (so the ink was dry) & invariably I sold out & had to make more during the day, with many members wanting a full set of covers. There were also others who wished to have their own covers cancelled. I would estimate that it would be closer to 800 covers that were cancelled by me.

There were three postmarks each with a fixed date, so I wonder why Colleen did not give them each a different number.

Colleen Woolley of Oz Pictormarks commended BPS for the celebration of the 150th Anniversary of the Brighton Post Office.

Colleen went on to say that she could find no information on the Brighton Post Office, it's incarnations or the number of covers produced.

Well I don't know about information about the Brighton Post Office or it's incarnations but I do know about the numbers produced & I am a little surprised that Colleen did not ask me, as we were both BPS & Australian Cover Society members.

Given time was short the Committee asked me to produce covers for the 150th Anniversary of the Brighton Post Office under my banner of "Beta Covers". I sourced 500 of the Art Design C6 pre-stamped envelopes & added my design to those envelopes.

April 19, 2003 was actually Easter Saturday & arrangements were made with the Postmaster for John Rennie & myself to attend the Brighton Post Office & postmark the 500 C6 covers I had overprinted. I also postmarked 50 covers for Havilah Enterprises, 20 covers each for two eBay dealers & another 20 each for John Rennie & myself. We also postmarked about 20 covers for people who came into the post office that morning & others who had placed mail orders with the Postmaster.

So there you have it 650 covers postmarked in the Brighton Post Office that morning. I am not aware of postmarking orders for the Philatelic Bureau.

Supplies of the official Australia Post outer cover came via Richard Breckon (Australia Post) & BPS member. These were being trialled by Australia Post at the time as a method to stop special cancels requested by collectors picking up other machine cancellations on their way through the postal system. For reasons unknown to me Australia Post did not continue with this system. The outer covers worked well with the BPS mailout although some did incur some minor damage in the postal system.

Colleen Woolley of Oz Pictormarks writes that BPS overprinted the Australia Post Centenary of Scouting with featured early Elsternwick Scout Geoffrey Fethers, who caught the interest of the BPS Committee.

The club obtained 300 blank fdcs (from memory that was that Australia Post had in stock) & these were designed & overprinted by BPS member Sylvie Smith. I, once again, was given the job of postmarking.

Colleen Woolley of Oz Pictormarks wrote that it was unusual to have a philatelic exhibition with postmarks in red for the first day, green for the middle day & black for the last day. We all know it is usually green for the first day, black for the middle day(s) & red for the last day.

Colleen said she could not obtain a satisfactory answer. Again Colleen did not me.

The 60th Anniversary of BPS coincided with the 57th Annual Congress of the Victorian Philatelic Council (VPC) which was celebrated with limited overprint of 250 Great Australian Railway Journeys miniature sheets which was postmarked with the black postmark of August 8 (APM#42512).

And this is the answer, the Committee decided that a black postmark would look better with the VPC overprinted Great Railway Journeys miniature sheets on the DL size envelopes that were printed for that purpose. :)

Well that completes my collection of Brighton Philatelic Society covers, I won't guarantee it is a complete set but that is what I have put together over the past 30 years.

I am not one of the official exhibitors for the Gala Display as I am busy putting my display together for the October display meeting of English, GB & UK Horse Racing, for a sample, see the link below:

https://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?t=86935

However I would like to show you here my Rotary & RAAF collections, both organizations having their Centenaries in 2021, & being the themed exhibits of the Gala Display.

So here I will start with Rotary. :)

Rotary International is an international service organization whose stated purpose is to bring together business and professional leaders in order to provide humanitarian service and to advance goodwill and peace around the world. It is a non-political and non-religious organization open to all. There are over 35,000 member clubs worldwide, with a membership of 1.2 million individuals, known as Rotarians.

The first Rotary Club was formed when attorney Paul P. Harris called together a meeting of three business acquaintances in downtown Chicago, United States, at Harris's friend Gustave Loehr's office in the Unity Building on Dearborn Street on February 23, 1905. In addition to Harris and Loehr (a mining engineer and freemason), Silvester Schiele (a coal merchant), and Hiram E. Shorey (a tailor) were the other two who attended this first meeting. The members chose the name Rotary because initially they rotated subsequent weekly club meetings to each other's offices, although within a year, the Chicago club became so large it became necessary to adopt the now-common practice of a regular meeting place. In 1922, the name was changed to Rotary International.

In 1921, four Rotary Clubs were created in Melbourne, Auckland, Wellington and Sydney. From there, Rotary and Rotaract clubs were created everywhere across Australia and NZ.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rotary_International

On the 17th May 1971, the Australian Post Office issued a single stamp to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Rotary International in Australia:

Australia 1971 50th Anniversary of Rotary International in Australia 6c stamp SG #488.
Australia 1971 50th Anniversary of Rotary International in Australia 6c stamp SG #488.

My first day collection of this stamp follows by cachetmaker. :)

Hopetoun is a town which serves as the major service centre for the Southern Mallee area of Victoria, Australia. Hopetoun is situated 400 km north-west of Melbourne on the Henty Highway in the Shire of Yarriambiack. In the 2016 census, Hopetoun had a population of 739.

The town was named after the 7th Earl of Hopetoun, the Governor of Victoria from 1889 to 1895 and later the first Governor-General of Australia. The post office opened on 12 September 1891 when the township was established.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hopetoun,_Victoria

The additional red cachet mentions a "Rotary Club of Hopetoun Project - Hopetoun Gateway to the Parklands". From my research so far I have not been able to identify this project except to determine that the Rotary Club of Hopetoun closed in 2007.

Australia Post fdc number 24 featuring a Rotary "Wheel" emblem for Rotary 6c stamp, overprinted "A souvenir from the Swan Hill Pioneer Settlement" & postmarked with the Swan Hill Folk Museum fdi postmark - 17th May 1971.

Swan Hill is a city in the northwest of Victoria, Australia on the Murray Valley Highway and on the south bank of the Murray River, 338 km NW of Melbourne. At June 2018, Swan Hill had a population of 11,103.

Swan Hill was named in June 1836, when explorer Thomas Mitchell camped on a hill and was kept awake with the sounds of swans. A post office opened in 1849 and a hospital and churches followed.

The Pioneer Settlement is 3 hectare site that opened in 1966 after a joint community and government effort to recognise the unique history of the Murray Mallee region. By the 1970s, the Pioneer Settlement was one of the most popular tourism destinations in Victoria.

Phoenix says the Swan Hill Folk Museum PO opened on 30/8/1970 & was renamed Swan Hill Pioneer Settlement PO on 27/9/1971 & became an LPO 29/11/1993.

The Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) is the principal aerial warfare force of Australia, a part of the Australian Defence Force (ADF) along with the Royal Australian Navy and the Australian Army. The Air Force is commanded by the Chief of Air Force (CAF), who is subordinate to the Chief of the Defence Force (CDF).

Formed in March 1921, as the Australian Air Force, through the separation of the Australian Air Corps from the Army, which in turn amalgamated the separate aerial services of both the Army and Navy. It directly continues the traditions of the Australian Flying Corps (AFC), formed on 22 October 1912.

The RAAF traces its history back to the Imperial Conference held in London in 1911, where it was decided aviation should be developed within the armed forces of the British Empire. Australia implemented this decision, the first dominion to do so, by approving the establishment of the "Australian Aviation Corps". This initially consisted of the Central Flying School at Point Cook, Victoria, opening on 22 October 1912. By 1914 the corps was known as the "Australian Flying Corps".

The RAAF took part in many of the 20th century's major conflicts. During the early years of the Second World War a number of RAAF bomber, fighter, reconnaissance and other squadrons served in Britain, and with the Desert Air Force located in North Africa and the Mediterranean. From 1942, many RAAF units were formed in Australia, and fought in South West Pacific Area. Thousands of Australians also served with other Commonwealth air forces in Europe, including during the bomber offensive against Germany. By the time the war ended, a total of 216,900 men and women served in the RAAF, of whom 10,562 were killed in action.

On the 6th June 1971, Australia Post issued a 6c stamp to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the forming of the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF):
