Wertheim Australian Pianos Cinderella

Post by adam78 »

Not sure of the date of this quintessentially Australian cinderella - the company was formed in 1908 and lasted in independent form until 1929. Kookaburra and Magpie on a barred fence, advertising the then large manufacturing company Hugo Wertheim. Only one I've ever seen.

This much more subdued effort below (HWPL=Hugo Wertheim Pty Ltd) is from c.1930 and is a revenue stamp for their mechanical rights on 78s.

and on its original, and rare, Australian-pressed Polydor 78rpm.

Fascinating Adam.....I recently researched Wertheim pianos as I was given one as a child- was always told it was an American piano but sold it recently and in checking the details uncovered the whole Wertheim saga- it would make a good mini-series! (They are now made in China  )

Had a search for similar cinderellas and found one produced by Holland Pianos, a US company (despite the graphic which could suggest otherwise)

Other Wertheim cinderellas can be found, but they aren't stamp-like

The rectangular ones below are from pianola roll boxes.

Gives a new meaning to "stamp-on-stamp" topicals
I am "ddaannv" on ebay, Dan at Dan's Stamps on HipStamp, and an APS member 86690 since 1976. Currently listing some British colonies, Disney, birds on stamps, and world-wide souvenir sheets including some on cover.

They have an additional claim to philatelic interest through their appearance in various settings on New Zealand's 1882 ad-sons.
