Help with Cinderella stamps from 1956 Melbourne Olympics?

Post by Thomasgun esq »

Hi All,

I saw these in a friend's collection and they caught my eye, I asked her is she knew anything about the stamps (excluding the obvious) and she replied no.

So I was hoping that someone out there could possibly fill in the blanks for me. Any info will do.

Kindest regards :D

Yes a dollar or so each in decent condition, but in pretty appalling condition like those look like in the scan, worthless pretty much. :cry:

Post by sj_perth »

This is my first attempt at using photobucket. Let me know if I have done something wrong.

I have a stamp which I hope someone can identify.

In Bill Horndage's "Cinderella" DVD that Brian produced a couple of years ago, in the first few of the 800+ pages, I found this;

"AUSTRALIA, 1956 Olympic Games. Four souvenir labels produced for the games all with outer border designs in silver and centres featuring a sport in a second colour: Cycling (red), Women's Hurdles (blue), Men's Swimming (purple), and Men's Running (green). Cpt set on special Olympic PC with 4d Olympic stamp affixed and cds at Games PO with special pictorial games cds. These Olympic labels themselves are scarce and seldom seen affixed to the Olympic cards as only small quantities were processed."

Unfortunately, there's no image to prove whether or not the labels illustrated above in the OP, are the ones Bill wrote about.

To gain a bit more insight, the following might be worthwhile:

There are a number of threads about the series of cinderellas originally asked about.

Here they are;

Great work by the volunteer team recreating threads affected by the Photobucket debacle. Even though this is quite an old thread, I hope people eventually learn to use the search feature as effectively.

Glen, to your three colours one needs to add a further colour to complete the four colours these labels were printed in.
They came in sheets, perforate and imperforate, ten different labels per sheet.

Yes. The Barcelona-based E. Moreno Medrano printer, active up to the 1960's specialized on Esperanto publications. They made, as well, a lot of Esperanto cinderellas.

Being a cinderella collector, based on the same city of Barcelona (Catalonia, Europe), I'm very familiar with their abundant, althought not specially nice, poduction of Esperanto cinderellas. An old friend of mine, even knew the owner of the printer.

The 1956 Melbourne Games cinderellas, are also Esperanto ones.
I collect: Estonia 1990-1992 Postal History. Barcelona Postal History and postmarks. Catalan cinderellas. Botanical gardens. Ice creams on stamps. Used UK, Germany, Switzerland, Austria & Scandinavia.

No Glen.

I mean the imperforate Cinderellas that you posted early today and the Night watchman perforated ones. They're both 1956 Olympics and Esperanto Cinderellas.

Like this 1957 cinderella issued for the 1957 Barcelona Trading fair:

Image

As, I'm sure you know, the 5 points green star is the symbol of Esperanto.
I collect: Estonia 1990-1992 Postal History. Barcelona Postal History and postmarks. Catalan cinderellas. Botanical gardens. Ice creams on stamps. Used UK, Germany, Switzerland, Austria & Scandinavia.
