We all have and handle these from time to time. "Back of book", Revenues, "Cinderellas", duty stamps and all kinds of other stamp like labels. Discuss them all HERE!

Sharing my 1970s Bubblegum Sticker Collection

Post by castores »

Back in the early 1970s Australia was awash with bubblegum stickers.

They came in all sorts of themes, this was my favourite and if I remember correctly I have the full set (though I seem to be telling myself it might be missing one :( :? )

I should put them in order and check!

Here is a few examples of these stickers. As you can see they are 'mix and match', which I believe was my only reason for not actually using them - which head to permanently place with which car?

If there is interest in seeing the whole set I'm happy to scan.

Castores,
Do they come inside the wrapper or as a pack when we buy some?
I remember my friend had a sticker collection which comes with a noodles pack.

I vaguely remember these, which probably means that they weren’t that commonly stocked in the Newcastle area.

First of all - thanks for the change in the title, it means I'm meant to share the lot!

Second, can you change "Bubblegum" to "Chewing Gum", I'm sorry I have no idea how that word slipped into my vocabulary. I noticed a while back one of the centres near me with a sign that said "Center". I was not very happy

Kewinmons,
Do they come inside the wrapper or as a pack when we buy some?
Yes they did, plastic wrapper and the stickers were always powdery due to what they covered the gum with.

Glen,
Very cool -- are they stickers or trading cards?
Thank you :D I think so too, they are stickers. I will get them in order and start scanning. Also, I have an older set which probably are the reason they came up with these. They are stuck into a book in order and when I find those I will post them also - they are, I think, awesome!

Ubobo'
And the back of one card so that we can see the series name and issuer.
Ha! I just replied to you on another thread.... Yes, I meant to with the first post.

Hi again MarkM,
I vaguely remember these, which probably means that they weren’t that commonly stocked in the Newcastle area.
I don't think they were around that long, there were so many types going they seemed to change every day, I'm in Canberra (by the way, we can see clearly again - worst air pollution in the world just recently).

DJM
I remember the Star Wars/Kiss bubblegum Trading Cards & Egg Stickers but not these...
I don't think they were such a big run...

Wait until I find the other ones before this run!

Peter

I will now get them in order.... and post. Will be fun seeing them all again (hope they're all still together, I am extremely bad at keeping things in order).

BUBBLEGUM is the correct terminology for these cards as one stick of bubblegum came with each pack.

Looks like your stickers are from this series. 1970. Scanlens Oddest Hot Rods. Blank backs.

I remember a strip of four (I think) long pieces not one. Isn't bubblegum an american word? Nothing against you guys but I'm coming from Australia.

Hubba Bubba was the first I remember being called bubblegum.

No, we had both. "Chewing gum" could not blow bubbles, only "bubblegum" could.

Okay, so two missing. I believe that means one is hiding behind a unit - which has a fridge 'temporarily' in front of it. I think my original thought of one missing is correct and I will post the other at some stage (along with the earlier set).

The T20 Women's Cricket World Cup, England Vs South Africa is on, so this has been fun to do as I'm watching...

So, 1 - 65:

Hi Allanswood,

So did we and this couldn't make bubbles, therefore Chewing Gum. Title should be changed.

If you had kept a wrapper you would see that they all say "Bubblegum", so the title is correct.

Wow, I got goosebumps when I opened up that page, they look extremely clean. I never thought to search for them, I thought who else would've kept these stickers - extremely silly of me, everything gets collected.

Thank you for having a search and posting Ubobo. Love to have the complete set.

I have extras* for swap if anyone has my missing one/s or anyone who wants some one-offs for Aussie stamps (yes I would post in sell/swap but I'm just after anything I'm missing which is a lot so it would be easier just to email someone (is this okay to post this here? please edit if not) with my missing). Also anyone who has copies they want to get rid of. Email me and I can give you a full list of what I'm missing (irrespective of prices). Regarding trade equivalent, I'll be pretty much happy with whatever you offer - one stamp or whatever.

* Will email or post list of doubles as requested.

Looking at what you show you are missing # 8 45 66. # 8 is listed on ebay.

Interesting, 66 stickers yet the back of mine says 65 - might be the difference between the US and Aus release. Secondly my 23 is that set's 66. The 23 they have listed I have never seen.

Hmmm, looks like a last minute change (car in the middle of the heads?), was there something wrong with that number 23 here in Australia?

Oh no! variations in the same sticker set!

Number 8 is the one I am pretty sure I have (and is missing) - recognised it immediately. Edit: just noticed that's just short of $70 Australian including postage...

I am going to make a list of what I have missing (Australia) and post in the appropriate place, it is about time I stopped 'playing' with the stamps I have and do some serious filling.

I have many, many gaps. Look forward to hearing from you (you can jump the gun by letting me know you may be of help and I will email you once I have a list made).

Hi Allanswood,

The image you've shown may well be the set of stickers I was referring to earlier, time will tell once I find the book. Instead of separate heads and cars they were all in one.

Note, I have never bought gum in a wrapper like that, I gather that is an American one which (if that is the case) would obviously use the word 'bubblegum'*. I will agree that a good way to separate the two would be, as previously mentioned, bubblegum makes bubbles and chewing gum doesn't. The gum that came with my stickers did not make bubbles.

Peter

* maybe American 70s tv has skewed my understanding.

Back to the original purpose of posting these, in Glen's words, aren't they "very cool".

That's what I thought and why I decided to share them. I hope, apart from the wording, you enjoyed them.

I hadn't noticed the 65 Australia 66 USA thing. It makes getting your missing cards so much harder.
Also no guarantee that the Australian wrapper is the same as the USA one. I wish you well in that endeavour.

Thanks Ubobo, until I was directed to ebay listings I have never pursued the idea of obtaining the missing sticker/s.

Like I previously said, it's rather interesting that my 23 is a car surrounded by heads.

If I was that interested the 'missing' has gone from one (hopefully) to - 'do I want the American version as well'. No, definately no, what I have is more to do with my history of them and that time when I was just 10 or 11. I will have a search for my missing one and I will check out ebay for the one I believe I have missing but no rush.

I appreciate all those who have checked these out and look forward to more feedback. They aren't stamps but they do look cool.

That's the only way I remember the gum being sold - in wrappers like that..

The website is showing ALL the editions of gum and wrappers over the years. Somewhere I should have the Star Trek ones, probably buried with all my footy cards.

Castores. I would be going on to ebay, see who is selling Scanlens cards from that era, and emailing them to see if they have your missing cards. Helpful that you have duplicates.

Thanks Ubobo, I was thinking of StampBoard members, but yes I should check into it. Note, this should show I'm not so interested in $s but if someone is seriously collecting a set and I have this missing one/s, that would be nice. Thanks for the suggestion.
