It is a tiny piece off of a much longer US Tax Paid Cigar Strip..... I will pull my albums and catalogs and see if can pin it down.

Not in my collection but without doubt it can only be from the series of 1878. There are many possibilities based on the paper tyoe but here is the full listing of the series from Springer's 10th edition.

Your little snip from the right end was no doubt clipped off of an otherwise badly damaged specimen.

Pay no attention to the 40 year old prices above. Here is a full stamp for sale on Eric Jackson's web site.

I have taken the liberty of lifting his detailed scan and will display this stunning work of the engravers art in all its glory to be sure you have no doubt as to my ID.

RobRoyH,

The 1878 Cigar Strip is stunning! :D

Any idea who the artist/engraver was of that strip?

Most of these were assembled very quickly by BEP staff from pre-existing vignettes and dies in the vaults of the BEP which included work from earlier private bank note companies.

I recently saw some correspondence from BEP archives that the series of 1868 only took 2.4 DAYS to go from order to finished design.... in last week's APS Stamp Chat presented by Peter Schwarz on these stamps which are the earliest depictions of African Americans on US Stamps.

Having said that, a lengthy search in back issues of the ARA journal might provide details. I also belong to the Souvenir Card Collectors Society because the same "stock" vignettes were widely used on these cards also.

I have some very similar long Snuff strips which will be appearing on my Stamp Den thread when I work down to that point in my backlog.

An object lesson to all - Rob has very cleverly made it this size by using FIVE x IMGUR mages - I cannot even see one join on any of them!

The only trick is getting the pieces sorted into the proper order. I am using Photoscape X Pro to make perfect splits from an original large image.
