Newfoundland Roessler Cinderella - Any Information?

Post by carmel »

Hi,

I have a stamp like Cinderella from Newfoundland which shows a bi-plane within a green frame and is inscribed 15c AERIAL SERVICE 15c on top and NEWFOUNDLAND below.

Image

IMO it's quite aesthetically designed.

I haven't been able to find much information about this Cinderella, except that it was connected to a certain Roessier who printed/sold it.

Is it listed in Unitrade or some other catalog? Any information on why and what reason it was prepared and issued?

Cheers,

Carmel

In 1922 an essay was submitted by Whitehead Morris & Co for a proposed airmail service between St John's and Montreal. The vignette depicted a Vickers Vimy at Quidi Vidi and was inscribed "Aerial Service". It was engraved by W V Phillips and printed by De la Rue & Co.

In 1931 an American stamp dealer called Roessier produced a typographed imitation of the essay.

As you say, a nice cinderella.

Regards
Cullen

Hi,

Thanks.

Interesting that the government of Newfoundland did nothing to stop this.

I think you have the name slightly wrong.

Rather than "Roessier" the name is "Roessler".

There is a rather interesting thread on him here:

It would seem he was a bit of a character. :)

Hi,

I believe that you are correct.

I've looked again at the dealer advertising this Cinderella. The title is: "NFLD 15c Aerial Service Roessier Cinderella & write-up article, Pristine MNH".

However, the description also includes a portion of a May 6 1991 article from Linn's Stamp News which identifies the issuer as A.C Roessler.

Indeed quite a character.

Cheers,

Carmel
