Can anyone identify this Middle-Eastern (?) stamp?

We all have and handle these from time to time. "Back of book", Revenues, "Cinderellas", duty stamps and all kinds of other stamp like labels. Discuss them all HERE!

Can anyone identify this Middle-Eastern (?) stamp?

Post by JasonC »

Hello.
I have this curiosity, which I assume is Middle-Eastern due to the Arabic script and style, but I can't find it in my SG World catalogue under any of the obvious countries, so probably it's not for postage.

The print quality is good, so likely to be post-war?

Any information gratefully received!
Thanks
Jason

My guess: Turkey or Iran (Persia).

Thought it might be Pakistan because of that moon shape, but the text looks all the more elusive.

Perhaps some Iranian back-of-the-book issue. A stunning design, and very intricately detailed. Sorry I can't help much more, but now you have me curious too!

A Google image search returns a few results. One of which https://www.gokcemuzayede.com/urun/945986/turkiye-hilal-i-ahmer suggests (according to Google translate) they are "Turkey Hilal-i Ahmer Society Compassion Stamps - 1927".

Mainly collecting GB, working back from QEII. Often side-tracked into Japan, GB-era Hong Kong definitives, Ceylon and Australia pre-decimal.

Nice finding (the site), Goodwin.

I had time to check my old (1961) Zumstein. According to it, the stamp is 1926 issue and it was overprinted in 1927.

Many thanks Goodwin! I salute your Googling skills - I had tried many searches without success.

Following your lead, I also find this site:
https://www.yanstan.com/TURKEY/REPUBLIC%20PERIOD/KIZILAY%20& ... ONLYRC.htm
for many other Red Crescent stamps.

I'm surprised the date is as early as 1926 - you don't find this quality of colour printing so much at that date.

Not in my 1970 World Simplified catalogue, it's not :D

(Although I've identified many hundreds of other stamps from there, so it's no criticism)

You really need to be more up to date than that. Modern catalogues have colour pictures, which is a great help, and they are more modern pictures.

This should be a Turkish or Ottoman stamp though not a postage stamp. "تورکیا ھلال احمر جمعیتے" means Turkish Red Crescent Society, which is largest humanitarian organization in Turkey.
