OUR new look $10 note is here, guys, but you’d be forgiven for not knowing who is on it, even if you’ve been looking at her the whole time.

On Friday, the Reserve Bank pushed out its specimen for the new $10 note, one that includes Banjo Patterson and Dame Mary Gilmore. Patterson is familiar to most Australians, but Dame Gilmore? Not so much.

It turns out she’s been staring back at you from the inside of your wallet or purse for years. The new tenner shows the same people depicted on the old tenner, but it kinda looks like Dame Gilmore had a makeover. Does her nose look different to anybody else?

Image

Dame Gilmore was a poet and journalist born in 1865 who was known as a fiery, radical woman. She grew up in the NSW rural hub of Wagga and later moved to Sydney.

She deserves her place on the $10 note because she’s more Australian than you. She’s so Australian that after traveling to Paraguay in 1896 she established a communal settlement and called it New Australia.

Her face has adorned an Australia Post stamp and the Canberra suburb of Gilmore was named after her.

That settled, others had equally important questions about the new note, like: “Why does it look like a travel brochure from the Gold Coast from 1993?”

Other questions about the new $10 note: why does it look like a travel brochure for the gold coast from 1993?

Or, “Why does it have pollen on it?” To taunt the hay fever sufferers among us, obviously.

Governor Philip Lowe said it was important to keep familiar faces on the banknote and that Patterson and Gilmore deserved their place inside Australia’s wallets.

“Their work is recognised in several design elements on the banknote, including images of a pen nib in two of the clear windows and excerpts of their poetry in microprint.”

One of Patterson’s poems is carried on the neck of his collar. There’s some wildlife too, for those who are interested in that sort of thing.

“Each banknote in the new series will feature a different species of native Australian wattle and bird. The $10 banknote features the Bramble Wattle (Acacia victoriae) and the Sulphur-crested Cockatoo (Cacatua galerita),” Mr Lowe said.

The new notes won’t be issued until September, so don’t throw your old ones out just yet.

Interesting.

You'd have thought there were enough well known deceased ozzies to have 2 new ones on a re-designed note?

Dame Mary Gilmore looks a ton better on the new note than the 7c Australia stamp issue!

Seems like this re-design has been in the pipeline for TEN years - at a cost 2 years back, of near $10 million -

AUSTRALIA is set to lose its mind again with the release date of the new $10 note announced this week.

Reserve Bank governor Philip Lowe said the update currency will go into general circulation from 20 September and will offer the same features found in last year’s new $5 note.

‘The new notes contain the same world-leading security benefits as the $5 note, including a clear top-to-bottom window, and a tactile feature so that it can be recognised by vision-impaired members of the community,” he said in his opening statement to the House of Representatives Standing Committee on Economics.

The note will feature two of Australia’s biggest icons — prominent writers Dame Mary Gilmore and Banjo Paterson.

To ensure that the new banknotes can be used in day-to-day transactions across the country — including depositing machines — the Reserve Bank has been working with cash handlers, businesses and machine manufacturers in the lead up to the launch.

According to the Reserve Bank of Australia, the note will have the following features:

• A rolling colour effect when you tilt the banknote.

• Multiple security features in the clear top-to-bottom window.

• An image of the nib of a pen to represent Gilmore and Paterson’s works as writers.

• A flying cockatoo that will move its wings and change colour when the note is titled.

• A sulphur-crested cockatoo

• A reversing number 10, which changes within the homestead on the note.

• An interpretation of the Bramble Wattle.

• Two raised bumps on each of the long edges of the banknote, which work as a tactile feature.

• A portrait of Banjo Paterson is based on a photograph taken when he returned from the Boer War in 1900

• The designer’s interpretation of a horseman from the era of Paterson’s writing.

• Tiny parts of text in multiple locations on the banknote that includes excerpts from The Man from Snowy River.

• A cockatoo and wattle branch printed with fluorescent ink and visible under UV light.

Once the new $10 is released, people will be able to continue using the existing series of banknotes with all previously issued banknotes remaining legal tender.

And when the currency comes into circulation, let’s just hope it’s better received than the $5 was last year.

TAB betting terminals at various pubs in the Sydney CBD rejected the note, saying “Warning: bad or invalid banknote detected”.

Thirty poker machines were tested across three different venues, with every machine emphatically rejecting the note. Even a brand new machine delivered to a Sydney pub just one week ago rejected the note.

Numerous vending machines rejected the note, with one at Central Station swallowing it up with no credit added. Another vending machine at Central which said “We accept the new $5 and $10 note” did actually accept the banknote as currency.

The self-service checkout at the IGA Romero Food Hall supermarket at Martin Place also rejected the note.

The note was accepted at Coles, Woolworths and Kmart self-service checkouts across the city, along with OPAL card top up machines.

A TAB spokesman said the company was preparing to update its electronic betting terminals to accept the new $10 note “once testing is complete and regulatory clearance obtained.”

Ross Ferrar, chief executive of the Gaming Technologies Association, said newly built poker machines will be able to accept the note; however upgrading the note reader on older machines is the responsibility of the venue where the machine is installed.

The new $10 was released into circulation this morning, with a queue of about 40 people lined up at the Reserve Bank to buy a copy of the currency. Money collectors are interested in acquiring notes with low sequential serial numbers.

The new note features two iconic Australian writers, Dame Mary Gilmore and AB ‘Banjo’ Paterson, and has a rolling colour effect when it is tilted.

The note also contains multiple security features in the clear top-to-bottom strip and changing colours on the crest of the cockatoo.

It also has two raised dots which can be recognised by vision-impaired members of the community.

(Can someone past images please - I am having some issues)
