Raz wrote:Hi Brian, I'd like to register for a cd/dvd thanks. What is the difference? Is the CD only for use on a computer. What is on the DVD that is diffferent to the CD? :?:

Could you please explain, to quote Pauline Hanson.

And please send me paypal details, thank you.
Thanks Ron, simply put, due to the different technologies employed, the main difference between the formats is the amount of data they can hold: 4.7 gigabytes for a DVD compared to 650 megabytes for a CD. (Two-layer DVDs can store twice as much again.)

Both formats were originally employed to contain music and video though in recent years they have become used increasingly for data storage, as in this case.

When making a choice between the two for the Cinderella Price Lists I guess it comes down to two main factors; is your computer enabled to play CD or DVD format (or both - as most new PCs are); and to personal preference.

I hope this helps.

Meanwhile, PayPal invoice sent as requested.

I sent payment via PayPal on April 3, but never received any confirmation via email that you received the payment.

I just want to make sure that it didn't run awry.

Thanks,

-Dan

P.S. As I put in the notes section of my payment, for me it makes no difference between CD and DVD, *but* I would prefer a single DVD to having to deal with multiple CDs, so I guess it all depends on how large the total file size is of the project.

With respect to indexing (and by this I mean electronic searchability, not a hand-compiled set of index pages):

Have the PDFs been run through Adobe's internal OCR process so that they are fully searchable? What about an index file (catalog) of all the PDFs in the project?

I have authored several CD releases of PDF archives as part of my day job, and find the electronic search capabilities to be an important part of the process... easy to do both of the above, but they both have different effects on usability; one is within-document searching, and the other is being able to search across ALL documents on the disc in a single search. In my opinion, both are required to create an effective product.

I have a full set of the catalogues but have bound them into book form so not much use for copying, and indexing them is one of those jobs I have on my 'to do' list that never seems to get any closer to being done.

I will certainly give them a plug in Cinderella Corner when the time comes

Apologies Dan, I thought our system was foolproof - but only a fool would think that! Payment was duly received - and No 6 was reserved for you on April 4.

The PDFs will be indexed and fully searchable. Thanks for your comments.

Update: Cinderella Price Lists 1990-2000 on Disk

As advised on StampBoards, I had intended to publish the volume on CD and DVD on Monday, May 17. Work was completed early last week when testing revealed several issues which we are working to rectify including reduction of excessive file size and the achievement of 100% text searchability throughout the volume using Acrobat Reader software.

These improvements are essential for the optimisation of the volume and to maximise user experience.

Those who are familiar with Adobe technologies, you will understand that, in order to compile the volume, we had to re-scan every one of the 800-odd pages, convert them from flat image files to text-searchable PDFs, and combine them all into a single volume whilst maintaining reasonable image quality and a reasonable file size.

As a result, we are working to make the necessary improvements and the publication/shipping date will now be two weeks later than originally planned; hence, the revised publication/shipping date for Pre-Orders is Monday, May 31 and I have every confidence that this deadline will be met.

All StampBoarders who have pre-ordered the Disk have been advised by email of the delay and the revised publication/shipping date, and I thank the larger number who have written back with expressions of support and understanding, which make our efforts all the more worthwhile.

In addition to their Cinderella Price Lists 1990-2000 disk, each Pre-Order customer will also receive, by way of compensation for this short delay, a packet of several Cinderella items from the Lists originally offered for sale by Bill Hornadge.

Meanwhile, in a separate (following) post, I am extending the special Pre-Order price for the Disk to Sunday, May 30, to let other StampBoarders take advantage of this slight delay to obtain the Disk at an advantageous price.

Pre-Order pricing extended to Sunday, May 30

As advised in the previous post, revised publication/shipping date for Pre-Orders is Monday, May 31.

To allow other StampBoarders who've not yet ordered their Disk to take advantage of this slight delay, we are extending Pre-Order pricing to Sunday, May 30, details as under.

Thanks for your patience everybody; the digital (scanned and searchable) version on disk has now been published and all advance orders have been posted. Australian customers should start to receive theirs early next week (though Queen's Birthday long weekend everywhere except Western Australia will delay this); overseas customers should receive theirs in 7 to 10 days - orders have been sent to Canada, Denmark, Germany, Israel and the United States.

To order the completed project for $A35 post free in Aust - please click here -
