List showing Face Value of AP Annual Year Books?

Post by Tassie_Stamps »

Hi,

Just wondering if any Stampboards members have a list of Australia Post annual year book face values for each year 1981-current.

If you do, and could post it here that would be a great reference for me and other members :)

Thanks

If there isn't a list, I'm happy to kick off one, using the few lying around from the bottom of a bulk lot I bought.

It'd be a handy list to have on hand I'd imagine.

Glen Stephens has information on this site:

I believe these are the face values of all the year books issued.

I looked at that before posting above, they are the AP retail prices, which are not indicative of the face value inside.

BB's aren't supportive of cut-and-paste Excel spreadsheets.

Seems so far that AP price was about twice face...understandable, as you're getting a printed book with the stamps...as annual output & total face increases, the % over face price should decline--ie. if its $15 add-on for the book, there could be $17 face stamps, or $50 face stamps, but it'd still be $15 for the book.

I'll upload the FV's of some I have later on tonight if I can find them.. Thanks to other members for their input so far.

With things that are more interesting, like postal history, it's not surprising that these are no longer overly popular!

As I have said on other threads, they are re-sold more often than not still in the original plastic wrapping. What is the point of spending (up to) $100 on something, and never actually looking at what you have purchased? People who buy these and don't even open them cannot be philatelists, or even stamp collectors under any sane definition of the term.

Since there's no harm in duplication (it might even pick out human error) here are the books I have at hand:

1981 - $16.07
1983 - $17.75
1984 - $26.51
1985 - $22.58
1986 - $26.93
1987 - $30.57
2000 - $46.72 and $29.80 International

Since I'm not a mod, we might need one later on to edit an early post on this thread with a complete list, once we've got all the face values calculated. :)

Older people thinking "I'll buy 1 for each of the grandkids, and keep them til the kids are older and can appreciate them". Come that older time, the kids just want a computer game, not a book of stamps, and a dealer ends up getting a giant box with 3x of each yearbook as an estate clearout. :?

All utter nonsense, sorry.

For some years the selling price was VERY near face. Most books they sell vanish forever onto bookshelves etc, so highly profitable for AP.

Is there, or has there ever been, any sort of indication of the numbers of these issued?

I ask because there are some items which only ever got issued in these books, and it would be interesting to get some sort of idea of how many there are.

As an example, this was only issued in the 2005 yearbook.

This is because they don't want to reveal the downward trend in numbers - not just AP but most.

My answer to the bolded part would be "more than enough". Which is all that really matters. I suspect that most people who want the special Year Book only issues would already have them, and that new collectors who would want complete decimal issues including all of AP's variants are presently, and always will be pretty thin on the ground.

Having just bought two books, 2005 and 2007 at a market for $20 each, with stamps still in the original packing and the books unused, does one keep them in this state or does one unpack the stamps into the book?

Actually it does make a difference.

Some will say that the best resell value is in keeping them in pristine unopened condition. But you'll never look at any of the stamps that way, or read the background to the stamp sets.

However, if you don't open them and take the stamps out of the storage sheets, they will stick to the bottom joins between the clear front and the black backed sheets and be damaged. The labels do say that it is recommended that you take them out and put them in the proper mounts inside the books because what they are shipped in is not for long term storage.

I know this personally to be true and have had to very carefully rescue the stamps and put them in the albums.

Well when they sweat and get foxing and rust, from being stored in Queensland in the SWEAT BOX that AP marks as "NOT FOR LONG TERM STORAGE" - IT WILL MAKE A DIFFERENCE.

True.

But collectors can gain this information by a Freedom of Information request.

Australia Post have to tell you numbers sold if asked. It it not "commercial in confidence" or anything like that.

Yes I imagine that is correct.

We have many members here who are retired and have a little time on their hands. Well worth taking an half hour to seek and publish here that info - look forward to it!

If someone has the time, it would be a great idea. Just limit it to sales numbers, don't over complicate it. Ask for year album sales and also total sales of certain FDCs.

The numbers sold in recent years might surprise us.

People need to get onto this quick because as time goes on the sales data gets too hard to find for the people at AP. They aren't miracle workers. The past few (7?) years they could probably find readily, after that it gets buried somewhere. While AP prepare annual reports, these do not descend into the level of granular detail that we want.

If they frame their request along the lines of "I am writing on behalf of a community group, the Stamp Club of ... ", and keep their request sensible, AP might not charge for the info.
