Should one Scan with Protector sheet..

Post by tikithindi »

Hi,
I am Organizing my Collection of USA, Canada, UNO and India. India collection almost
completely done. Started scanning USA. My silly question is should one scan with Protector sheet
or take out stamp or Stamp Pans from protector sheet and scan it. otherwise is it ok to keep
Stamps in Sheet or Stock sheet and scan. How other people or you do it.
Advice highly appreciated.

If these scans are for your own use, then you can leave them to make your task as simple as possible.

If these scans are to be able to post online to ask questions or to sell, then definitely scan out of protector.

When you scan in any form of pocket, sleeve or holder, the detail of the scan can show bits of dust or flecks/dents in the plastic that appear to be on the stamp. Also, if the stamp is larger than the pocket it is in, you get the dredded “line across the stamp” from the edge of the pocket.

Just one opinion…..

I take them always out of the protection to get as much of details. If it is to sell or swap a common stamp, let it in.

Thank you very much librarianc and stapper
Appreciate you opinion very much. Asking this silly type of question was because I have
huge collection of Block, Zip block, strips and sheets. Singles are kept in stock sheets. Others are in
protector sheets, Glassine page books, Glassine Envelopes and Bags.
Will appropriately scan these. Apart from USA have to do same or Canada and UNO and wild life Issues.

Thanks again.

Cheers

Namasté Tikithindi,

In every case, I try not to much to take the stamps, blocks, etc out of the protective sheets.

On the other hand, once in a while, mint stamps should be taken out to prevent the gum to adhere.

Are those protective sleeves archival quality? I worry about housing one's collection in those.

Hi ddaan,

I use Hawid (produced by Lindner if I remember correctly) protection sleeves. My deceased mother (I bought her collection) used her first somewhere in the 60ies or 70ies and they are still piccobello.

Regards,
Hans

Really depends on what you want the scans for,.

Scanning out of protectors is always better. Especially if you want to blow up and show varieties.

But, if you are scanning large blocks or sheets to show what the basic stamp looks like, then source a picture elsewhere. Then no unnecessary handling of large sheets out of protectors etc.
