Australia Postal Rates Compendium - 1913 to 1949

Post by traralgon3844 »

The links below come from The State Library of Western Australia's on line access to Wise's Directory for Western Australia.

No only does this directory have the postal, telegraph and Money Order rates it has a wealth of information about Stamp Duties and other social aspects of Western Australia.

The Link to Wises' Directory is here:

http://www.slwa.wa.gov.au/find/wa_resources/post_office_directories/1949

Years covered are 1893 to 1949. I have provided the links to the postal rates 1913 to 49.

Enjoy.

I can't get over the cost of a telegraph to London in 1925. 2/6 per word.

No wonder they needed £2 Kangaroos.

Great information for anyone researching W.A.

Example: you can see that in 1946 the Postmaster at Jardee was Archibald SCOTT.

These links give an excellent snapshot of what the postal rates were at the time of publication.

From these one can see that sometime in 1918 (or 1919) a ½d war tax was applied to most items posted. The war tax was discontinued in 1920 and the postage rates went up by a similar amount in 1920. Does anyone have the actual dates when these events occurred?

I managed to find that the ½d war tax was introduced on 28 October 1918.

Does anyone have the date when it was discontinued?

The removal of the "war tax" took place on 1 October 1920 and the new postage rates applied from the same day.

Yes most high value Roos in the early watermarks were used on Telegrams and most never re-entered the stamp market.

"Repaired" Telegraph punctures are certainly around as a few naughty Postmasters sold the audited forms off instead of destroying them.

Probably once a year MAYBE, do I see a postally used £1 or £2 1913 on the market GLOBALLY .. lots of CTO, but never postal used.

Under the widely used airmail service of early 1930s there was almost no use for them on mail!

Which is why finding postally used Small Multi and CofA £2 Roos is not hard, often with AIR MAIL SECTION cds cancels.

Some information I found....

Basic Domestic Letter Rates

1d – 1911
2d – 1920
3d – 1950
5d – 1959
4¢ – 1966 (Introduction of decimal currency)
5¢ – 1967
6¢ – 1970
7¢ – 1971
10¢ – 1974
18¢ – 1975
20¢ – 1978
22¢ – 1980
24¢ – 1981
27¢ – 1982
30¢ – 1983
33¢ – 1985
36¢ – 1986
37¢ – 1987
39¢ – 1988
41¢ – 1989[57]
43¢ – 1990 (effective 3 September 1990)
45¢ – 1992 (effective 2 January 1992)
45¢ – 2000 (effective 1 July 2000. With the introduction of the GST, the postage component was decreased to absorb the new GST cost, so for the public there was no change in stamp prices. For businesses the GST claimable component of the postage rate was 4¢, leaving a reduced cost to business users of just 41¢.
50¢ – 2003 (effective 13 January 2003)
55¢ – 2008 (effective 1 September 2008)
60¢ – 2010 (effective 28 June 2010)
70¢ – 2014 (effective 31 March 2014)
$1.00 – 2016 (effective 4 January 2016)
$1.10 – current (effective 1 February 2020)

Large letters

Since about 2005, larger letters have been charged a round multiple of the base postage rate, which is helpful to customers if they do not have stocks of the more expensive stamps.

260 x 360 x 20mm – Up to 125g – $2.20
260 x 360 x 20mm – Up to 250g – $3.30
260 x 360 x 20mm – Up to 500g – $5.50

A large letter, including packaging, cannot be more than 20mm thick or larger than 260x360mm, otherwise it will be considered a parcel, which as of 2019 costs a minimum of $8.30 (up to 500 grams).

I have visited several stampboard forums related to Australian postal rates and the truth is that they are all very good. but nowhere do I find information for pre-1960 rates. And I would like to know where I could find the rates for 1960 foreign mail. Can someone help me. Thank you.

Thank you very much for your great contribution Bazza4338, I see that the Australian postal rates for the period 1955-1966 are very complicated.

I can't figure out what rate they would have to pay in 1960 for a letter sent from Melbourne (Australia) to Israel. which law you would have to name for your postal survey.

I upload the image of the letter that I have already uploaded to other forums but I have not received a specific response. Hope someone can help me.

Thank you.

Reason: Added pars and spacing and “air” – always a superb idea on Bulletin Boards! Use the "PREVIEW" button folks. It is there for a GOOD reason. Added COUNTRY.

I'll hazard a guess....

Australia, 1956, Olympic Games Commemorative Issue. - issued 31 October 1956.

2/- was the airmail rate to United Kingdom and most overseas countries.

then the card is wrong, its rate of 2 shillings is wrong. because Israel is not an overseas territory. it would have to be 7.1 / 2 for foreign countries. I believe that the annotations in pen may indicate the lack of fees. this letter is a mystery to me. I think we have not yet guessed the reason for that rate.

Re 1956 Melbourne Olympic Games data.....

7½d was the (SEAMAIL) letter rate to foreign countries; 2/- was the (AIRMAIL) rate to United Kingdom and most overseas countries.

Israel is a Foreign or Overseas country from Australia's point-of-view.

I believe your letter was sent from Caulfield, Melbourne to Israel by airmail and thus the 2/- postage is correct.

The annotation on the letter are the Hebrew month/year and 5 lira.

Given that the letter is to a Jewish Orthodox charity in Jerusalem, I suspect it may indicate the sum received by the charity.

Thanks for your help. I have found it difficult to know the rate. of the predecimal period there is nothing on the internet. a greeting. Do you know where you can consult for future letters of that period?
