DESCRIPTION

Six flaws.

(a) right frame: small sharp inward notch immediately below top corner.

(b) Shading in oval: small break to right of centre of 8th line, counting up, below neck.

(c) Right value shield: line shaped like handle of shepherd's crook through ball of figure 2 and curving down just before meeting side of large 1, There is also a line upwards from the top almost joining the base of the small 1. (E.28)

(d) Shading behind emu's legs: roughly triangular flaw caused by absence of right ends of 11th and 12th lines (counting down).(E28)

(e) Shading between emu's legs: small break in outline at centre of rear leg, with variable abnormalities in adjacent shading. (E.28)

(f) Head and shading at front: distortion of outline of neck immediately below beard giving appearance of Adam's apple. The shading line joining the lower part of the projection has its upper side rough throughout its length.(E28)

N.B. Some copies show abnormalities in shading on neck and across band which are in line with the flaws on the emu and in the shading, and this may indicate a cracked electro.

Combinations (E.25, 26, 27) (a), (b).
(E.28) (a), (b), (c), (d), (e), (f).

I believe this block is 7R28-30 - 7R34-36 as it is consistent with faults described by Davidson and Dix.

3d KGV block of 6 with top left 7R28?

7R30 - No faults listed

7R34 - Described as:
a) POSTAGE the colour centre of the O is enlarged and colour encroaches on it's outline between 7 and 9 o'clock making the lower left part of the outline straight.
b) POSTAGE band: small dot or mark just below the letter O at 7 o'clock.
c) Left value shield: the upper half of the right border thinned
d) Outer white oval: thinning under POS of POSTAGE. (May not be present)
e)Value Tablet: the thin curved line at the top of the tablet is abnormally thin under the P of POSTAGE.
f)Shading at left of value tablet: a variable number of lines, usually 4 or 5 at the upper part of the shading are thickened, and some of the thickened lines may coalesce to form solid colour.

Re: All Australian King George V wiki posting thread

Post by satsuma »

We need an executive decision as to where the information about the "hollow S" overprint is located in the wiki.

It's listed in the ACSC as:

½d Orange 69(OS)(8)r
1d Green 82(OS)h recorded from all 4 plates
2d Red SMW 102(OS)j (does not occur on all sheets)
2d Red CofA 103(OS)j (does not occur on all sheets)
3d Blue 109(OS)(8)m
4d Olive 116(OS)(3)u (does not occur on all sheets)
and it is not present on the 5d value.

Upper image hollow S - lower image normal

Upper image 109(OS)(8)m found on 8R17
Upper image 109(OS)(8)m found on 8R17

The timeline of production of these overprints also raises a question.

½d Orange stated to have utilised a 240 forme delivered into stock 21 Apr 1932
1d Green stated to have utilised a 120 forme (at least sometimes), issued Mar 1932
2d Red SMW stated to have utilised a 240 forme issued Feb 1932
2d Red CofA stated to have utilised a 240 forme issued Feb 1932
3d Blue a 240 forme is implied by the hollow S being identified as plate 8 only issued Mar 1933
4d Olive stated to have utilised a 240 forme delivered into stock 2 Feb 1932
5d Brown stated to have utilised a 120 forme delivered into stock Jan 1932.

The logical inference is that first a 120 forme was made to overprint the 5d value to match the sheet size.
Then when the decision was made to overprint the 2d and 4d values a second 120 forme was made which could be attached to the first forme as required allowing the overprint of the larger sheets. This second forme was produced with the hollow S.

This explains the hollow S on the 4d olive being on the upper plate and on the 3d blue being on the lower plate. If the 240 forme was not separable into 2 by 120 formes, this would be impossible.

This also explains the occurrence of the variety on all four plate of the 1d Green as it allows the formes to be attached in different orders at various times, thereby making such occurrence possible.

What can we make of the comment "not found on all sheets"?
Two explanations come to mind.

It may be that there was a third 120 forme and from time to time the two without the hollow S were attached together.

It may also be that when a second overprint run was decided on, the 240 sheets had already been guillotined so a single 120 forme was utilised and it happened to be the one without the variety.

I'm quite happy to receive further comment about this, whether in support or to refute.

7R23, Early state

7R23.jpg

DESCRIPTION

From the top down:

1. Upper Frame: Narrow break where the frame should join the left side of the top of the crown.

2. Small break in the third shading line above the left wattles.

3. Shading at the right of the left wattle spray: 17th line (counting down) broken for 0.5 mm immediately before it joins the leaf of the spray. (Partly obscured by the postmark in this copy.)

4. White flaw on emu's leg.

5. White dot to right of right fraction bar.

6. Spot above the R in THREE.

7. Spot between L & F of HALF.

8. Left Lower Corner: Rebuilt with added metal resulting in a ragged appearance of 2 mm of the lower frame, abnormal pointing of the corner, and running together of lines of shading adjacent to the corner. The repair wore rapidly. This early printing shows a part of the repair having separated from the main stamp design.

This is a clearer image of 83 4R55 than is currently in the wiki.

On reflection, there is perhaps some further comment required about Plate 4.

Here is the imprint, from which the plate 4R55 flaw was imaged:

Here is 4R55 showing the flaw:

Here is 4L60 showing detail:

Here is our wiki example of 4L60:

wiki example
DESCRIPTION
State 1
There is a diagonal white scratch above the letter "T" of "POSTAGE".
The bottom horizontal arm of the last "E" of "HALFPENCE" in the central value tablet is missing.

So it would appear that State 1 is actually State 2 and my pair is State 1
There are indications that a flaw is developing above the "T" of "POSTAGE"
The bottom horizontal arm of the last "E" of "HALFPENCE" in the central value tablet is complete.

Note also that the first "E" of "HALFPENCE" has a small vertical flaw below it, in both cases.

I'm interested in feedback from the experts.

Further to the previous post here is a plate 4 imprint block:

Here is the detail of the neck flaw:

83(4)R55

And here is 4L60 with effectively no flaws present at all
83(4)L60
83(4)L60
Perhaps this is Stage 0?

18R55 No Watermark
No Watermark 18R55
No Watermark 18R55

DESCRIPTION

There is a small coloured flaw in the inner white oval which joins the left end of the 3rd shading line from the bottom of the oval to the coloured band above the letter "O" of "POSTAGE". Appears to be absent on this example

There may be a blurred flaw below and to the left of the letter "P" of "POSTAGE". It also affects the kangaroo's foot. This occurs only in no watermark and later single watermark printings. As can be readily seen.

Although we have 14L12 State 2 in the wiki, and state 1 is without known flaws, this example appears to be a state in between state 1 & 2.

intermediate? state 14L12
intermediate? state 14L12

The white flaw between eye and ear is clearly evident but all the other weaknesses are yet to develop.
