32s fish - 1992 surcharge - 45s on 32s

11 Aug 1992 - A small number of sheets surcharged 45s due to a change in postal rates. 45s value is now needed to pay the overseas surface and aerogramme rates, and there were no current 45s stamps.

Image
Artwork for full sheet of text for surcharge on 32s value issued in 1990 – it was initially intended to surcharge sheets of the 15s crab value issued May 1992 but it was then decided instead to surcharge the remainders of the 1990 32s value because 150 full sheets were available and the 32s value would soon no longer paid any postal rate

1988-1989 additions to the set

All the above posts show printings which came from the original 17 artwork drawings done by Walsall in house artist Ray Edge in 1984.

In 1988 it was decided to add another six designs to the set. Five of the new designs would be used for new values which were to be added to the set – 7s, 35s, 42s, 57s and T$1.50. The sixth new design would replace the T$1.00 coral design and a T$1.00 value showing a turtle would be issued in its place.

Ray Edge was asked to produce six new designs showing marine bird life (3 different), seahorse, whale and turtle. These were done, and the new stamps were added to the set between Oct 1988 and March 1989

42s bird – 1988 printing

Issued 18 Oct 1988 – The 42s value is added to the set to pay the zone 1 airmail rate for 15 gm to countries within the Pacific region. Printed photo-litho in 4 colours on paper with fluorescent additive making it whiter, PVAD gum, perf 14½x14, date 1988 at the bottom, issued in sheets of 20

Image
Artist drawing used for two printings in 1988 – in the first printing, the blue colour extended in error into the top right corner, so it was decided to do a second printing to correct the error

The first printing shows the bird set against a blue background which extended fully into the top right corner and so differed from all other values in the set. This was an error caused by the failure of the printers to mask this portion to create an oval. In addition it was felt that the colour of the bird was wrong.

A second printing was then made correcting the shade of the plumage and removing the unwanted colour from the border.

7s bird – 1989 printing

2 March 1989 – The 7s value is added to the set for use as a makeup value for the zone 2 airmail rate of 57s to countries outside the Pacific region, photo-litho in 4 colours on chalk-surfaced paper, with PVAD gum and date 1989 at the bottom, perf 14½x14

Image

Artist drawing used for only printing in 1989 – the background shading originally extended in error up over the value tablet, as shown in the first cromalin proofing. This was corrected before the stamps were printed, and the excess background shading was removed on the artwork as can be seen above

Image
First cromalin proofing - error – too much mauve colour and background shading is too high over value tablet

Image
First bromide proofing - error – background shading is too high over value tablet

The errors were noticed on checking the proofs, so amendments were made to the artwork, and second proofings were then done

T$1.50 whale design

T$5.00– 1996 printing

31 May 1996 - The T$5.00 value design is modified to improve quality. Problem with 1994 printing was that all text was at bottom, so latin inscriptions are moved to the top left. Photo-litho 4 colour process, PVA gummed paper, perf 14, sheets of 12 with two central labels

SUMMARY

Printers for all sets were WSP (Walsall Security Printers)

137 different stamps

1984 set – self-adhesive

First set in the series – all self-adhesive stamps – none of the self-adhesive stamps down to 1986 show dates at the bottom
.
1s shell
2s coral
3s fish
5s shell
6s crab
9s shark
10s shell
13s fish
15s shell
20s fish
29s shell
32s fish
47s shell
$1 coral
$2 crab
$3 shell
$5 tuna fish

1984 Officials

All values from the first set were also issued overprinted official for government department use except the $3 value (one sheet of $3 values was also ovptd official, but not officially issued – these are rare)

1s shell
2s coral
3s fish
5s shell
6s crab
9s shark
10s shell
13s fish
15s shell
20s fish
29s shell
32s fish
47s shell
$1 coral
$2 crab
$3 shell
$5 tuna fish

1985 experiment

WSP experimented with perforations for self-adhesive stamps and issued the 9s value perforated where the backing paper was pulled away from the stamp - a world first

9s shark perforated but still self-adhesive

1986 overprints

By 1986 some of the values were in short supply, so other values with larger stocks were overprinted with needed values

4s on 2s coral
4s on 13s fish
42s on 3s fish
42s on 9s shark
57s on 6s crab
57s on 20s fish
$2.50 on $2 crab
$2.50 on $5 tuna fish

1986 Overprints officials

Seven of the eight values were also overprinted for official use

4s on 2s coral
4s on 13s fish
42s on 3s fish
42s on 9s shark
57s on 6s crab
57s on 20s fish
$2.50 on $2 crab

1987 Trials gummed paper

Up until here, all stamps have been self-adhesive, but in 1987 WSP experimented and used the same plates to print two of the most used values on normal gummed and perforated paper

These two are scarce mint and show no date at the bottom

10s shell
32s fish

1988/89 set

By 1988 many values were in short supply, so WSP printed a new set on perforated and gummed paper – some values from the 1984 set were no longer needed, and other new values were added to this new set – all stamps have the dates of 1988 or 1989 at the bottom

1s shell
2s coral
4s fish
5s shell
6s crab
7s bird
10s shell
15s shell
20s fish
32s fish
35s seahorse
42s bird
42s bird reprint
50s shell
$1 turtle
$1.50 whale
$2 crab
$3 shell
$5 tuna fish

1990 Chalky Paper

WSP did another experiment in 1990 by reprinting four stamps in large format on chalky paper. These have 1990 date at the bottom

2s coral
5s shell
10s shell
32s fish

This set did not last long and is quite scarce in mint condition and on cover

1990 Small size format

WSP then reprinted the same four values with 1990 date at bottom, but this time in small size format

2s coral
5s shell
10s shell
32s fish

Booklet stamps

The same four stamps were issued in booklet panes of 4 panes per booklet (each booklet is the same except for the design on the cover) – each pane has 10 stamps with the outside 3 sides imperf so combinations of perf and imperf on different sides exist - 4 types of each stamp exist - imperf at left, imperf at right, imperf at left and bottom, imperf at right and bottom

2s coral
5s shell
10s shell
32s fish

1992 Reprints

Three values in short supply were reprinted in small format with 1992 date at bottom

2s fish
5s shell
10s shell

1992 New Values

At the same time, two new values were added to the set – the 15s crab is in small format with 1992 date at bottom

15s crab
$10 shark

1992 Overprint

Due to shortages, 2 values were overprinted

45s on 32s fish (small format)
1s on 20s fish (large format)

1993 Overprints

There was a shortage of 10s and 20s values, so these two overprints were done locally on Tonga and WSP only found out about these later on – the 20s on 4s fish is extremely rare

10s on 2s coral
20s on 4s fish

1993 Small Format

Shortages of some values prompted new printings in 1993 – these are small format with 1993 date at bottom

1s shell
3s fish
5s shell
10s shell
20s fish
45s shell
60s shell
80s fish

1994/5 Large Format

Four high values were reprinted in 1994 with 1994 date at bottom – in large format – and the $10 shark was done later and has 1995 date at bottom

$1 turtle
$2 crab
$3 shell
$5 whale
$10 shark

No officials for 1993 or 1994

1995 Small Format

Five values were again in short supply and were reprinted in small format with 1995 date at bottom

10s shell
20s fish
45s shell
60s shell
80s fish

1995 Small Officials

The same five values were also overprinted official for local government use

10s shell
20s fish
45s shell
60s shell
80s fish

1996 Large Format

The five high values were reprinted in 1996 with 1996 date at bottom

$1 turtle
$2 crab
$3 shell
$5 whale
$10 shark

1996 Large format Officials

The five high values with 1996 date were also overprinted official for local government use

$1 turtle
$2 crab
$3 shell
$5 whale
$10 shark

The marine life stamps lasted until 1998 at which time a new birds definitives set was issued.

An excellent thread. I'm not a collector of Tonga but I am very impressed with the thoroughness of this study. It gives me ideas of how to better study areas that I do collect.

This is a great thread and should be used as a ready reference for anyone who is a serious collector of Tonga. Thanks for sharing it.

Great job.

I did not even know about this until recently, but it helps greatly as I have a quantity of these stamps from Tongan paperware, as you all know too my 5 copies of the 4s on 20s fish stamp of 1993.

Thanks for this info!
