Retouch under Y of PENNY (and frame break under N of PENNY) - ACSC 2(A)h

Image
====================
One of the most extensive retouches to a 1d red position. ABP describes it as follows:
"
(a) Retouched bottom right corner: bottom frame thicker than normal for 6.5 mm from right corner.
(b) Shading below Y of PENNY first line over inner frame is missing for 1.00 mm from right frame. The inner frame bends up at the corner.
(c) Below first N of PENNY: break in bottom frame from 7.0 mm to 7.5 mm."

Upper Plate B

Like plate A, plate B is composed of Die I clichés and was printed along with Plates A, C and D in a 480-on configuration. Plate B was in use from 23 December 1912 to 26 November 1913. Thus the plate was in use for nearly 12 months, which explains the long list of printing varieties attributed to it.

Plate B was always paired to the lower plate C.

The diagram below shows the positions of individual clichés on a plate of 120 units. The plate comprises left and right panes divided by a central gutter. The positions of the watermarks (POSTAGE, etc.) shown on the diagram are reasonably accurate. Being an upper plate Plate B does not have printer monograms. Note that it does have two anchoring punch holes in the right-hand sheet margin (not shown in the diagram).

Clichés shaded have no known constant printing flaws. Clichés without shading have constant printing flaws, with some flaws having more than one state. The numbering of stamps is conventional.

Constant varieties identified in the Australian Commonwealth Specialist Catalogue (2017) (ACSC) are indicated by the lettering used in the Catalogue. Thus, for example, the cliché at position 1L1 has the letter d, meaning that this is the position of the ACSC-listed flaw 2(B)d. Note that the ACSC identifiers start at d and run to o.

The positions of constant flaws and their descriptions come from the following sources:

Adams, D., B. Bell, G. Pope (2004), 1d Red Kangaroo and Map Series, published by the authorss.

Kellow, G.N. (ed.) (2017), The Australian Commonwealth Specialists’ Catalogue: Kangaroos, Brusden-White.

BL1 (first state)
ROSTAGE.

There are two states. In the first, the nearly horizontal white flaw across the centre of P giving it the impression of R is not present.

According to ABP, present are the following two indicators:
"
(a) Bottom frame: small vertical coloured mark on inner side, 0.5 mm from right frame.
(b) Right frame: small coloured mark on inner side, 1.0 mm above bottom frame."

.

.

.
====================

BL1 (second state)
ROSTAGE - ACSC 2(B)d

In addition to flaws (a) and (b), a large flaw by P of POSTAGE occurs, giving it the appearance of an R.

White scratch in bight - ACSC 2(B)e

ABP provides the following comment: "Shading in Bight: 3.25 mm scratch from right end of line 4 down, 9.0 mm from right frame, cutting 16 lines to line 3 over Tasmania, 8.75 mm from right frame."

ABP also notes that there is a secondary marker: "Bottom frame below O of ONE: bulge on outer side, 2.0 mm to 2.5 mm from left frame."

There is a third marker, not identified by ABP, but identified by other authors including J. Sluman in his 1992 mongraph "The 1913 Penny Kangaroo Flaw List": shading below E of ONE, a red spot between the inner frame and the 1st shading line.

All three markers are shown on this example.

BL40
"1" flaw west of Tasmania - ACSC 2(B)f,fa

One of the iconic flaws on the 1d Red Kangaroo.

ABP provides the following description

First state. Shading left of Tasmania: irregular white flaw breaking lines 8 to 12 above first N of PENNY, 6.5 mm from right frame. Breaks vary from 0.25 mm to 2.75 mm in width. Not in earlier printings.

Second state. The flaw extends downwards thru line 5 above the N and then develops a leg to the left along line 3 above the N.

Third state. The leg of the flaw on line three becomes extended.

According to Sluman's 1992 list of flaws.

Shading left of Tasmania: a variable and irregular white flaw breaking 3rd to 11th lines above 1st N of PENNY 6.5 mm from right frame: the breaks vary from 0.25 mm to 0.75 mm in width.

In his 1980 "The 1913 Penny Kangaroo of Australia", Legge describes it as an “extra island” west of Tasmania, continuing down to above the first N of PENNY. This flaw occurred only in later printings and attempts were made to erase the lower part of it.

Legge then shows two examples of possible retouches.

White flaw off Cape York - ACSC 2(B)h

The stamp with white flaw on Cape York also has its bottom frame shaved inwards for 0.5 mm from the left frame.

ABP notes three states. In the first state, the white flaw is not present, but the shaved bottom frame is. In the second state, the white flaw emerges. In the third and final state, the emergence is complete with breaks in (i) line 1 down, 3.75 mm, (ii) line 3 down, 4.0 mm; and (iii) lines 5 to 7 down, 4.0 mm to 3.5 mm. All measurements are from the right frame.

Cracked cliché .

This flaw comes in three states. The first is unremarkable - at the upper left corner the upper frame slopes down. The second and third states are far more interesting, with both displaying a fine crack in the cliché from East to West starting in the shading lines a little above Tasmania.

I have stamps showing the first and third states.

First state.
.
Image
.
Image
.
===================
Second state (Short-lived and rare)

Characteristics are as follows:

(a) Sloping upper frame as in State 1.
(b) (from ABP) "Heavy inking east of Australia and in the Bight: shading lines 6 to 15 above Tasmania, to the east of Australia and in the Bight. The lower line of the heavy inking is a crack that extends horizontally through most of the cliché.
(c) Right innter frame: break 6.0 mm above bottom frame.
(d) Shading above Tasmania: breaks in lines 1 and 2, 6.75 mm and 6.5 mm respectively from right frame.
(e) Shading above Tasmania: break in lines 1 and 2, 6.75 mm and 6.5 mm respectively from right frame."

Cracked cliché

Adams, Bell and Pope identify two states of this rather difficult to see crack. Below, stamp 1 shows the first state and stamp 2 the second.

The two states are described as follows.

"First State
(a) Almost vertical scratch from line 1 above Cape Treville through line 4 (and sometimes line 5) above, 2.5mm from left frame.
(b) Almost vertical scratch from line cutting Cape Londonderry (and sometimes line above Cape) down 3 lines, 6.0mm from left frame.
(c) Crack west of value circle: commencing above E of ONE and extending upwards west of value circle in the WA coast just right of Albany. Not always clear or cutting all shading lines in first state.

Second State
(a) and (b) As above.
(c) Crack west of value circle: commencing above E of ONE an extending upwards west of value circle to the WA coast just right of Albany, visibly cutting all shading lines.
(d) Almost vertical scratch to the left of P of POSTAGE through five lines of shading down from the shading ling through the bottom of P."

Ok. I'm back under control. Let's continue.

This flaw comes in two states, as shown in the two stamps below. From ABP:

"First state
Shading below AU of AUSTRALIA: the flaw start with a 1.0mm break in the first line below AU, 3.0mm to 4.0mm fro the left frame.
Second state
It develops into a larger flaw including the second line 3.5mm to 4.0mm from the left frame. Some copies show a weakening in the shading lines from the flaw, south east to below the P of POSTAGE."

Break in value circle

In early printing there is a break at around 1 o'clock in the the value circle. Later, in addition,

"(b) Shading below last A of AUSTRALIA: small break in line 2 below centre of A, 1.75mm from right frame."

==================
In the stamp below, only the value-circle break appears.
