Excellent posts Cill Dara, hopefully they will complement/complete Puffin's tour.
I prefer to collect UK, British Commonwealth esp Pacific area ( not excluding West Indies/Canada ) and Western Europe. At the bottom of my zone of interest is Eastern Europe and communist countries.

Lady Cill Dara boards Aer Arann flight at Inverin in Galway for the short hop over to Inis Mór.

Her Ladyship gets to sit up front, beside the pilot......sitting behind, I warned her not to touch anything.

A question.

Quite some years ago, my wife (her first visit) and I visited England on a brief (unfortunately) business trip.

We had to meet up with a business client in Birmingham in a few days.

We stayed near Marble Arch then drove to The Cotswolds - absolutely beautiful.

Then worked our way up through Castle Combe (Dr. Doolittle) and Stow-On-The-Wold (stayed in the oldest inn in England I believe - 940 AD) and finally into Redditch, Birmingham. Redditch guy said he always stayed in the most modern hotels and looked at us as if we were odd - which we were I'm sure - in his mind.

Coming back to Heathrow, we happened upon an English lady who, picking up on our accents, asked how we would describe England in one word.

Couldn't really fit it into one word - everything was green; pristine villages; neat; old, old, old buildings (some guy placed that brick in that wall 500 years ago - type of thing).

She suggested "quaint".

It sounded alright - but then it didn't.

Never came up with that one word.

Suggestions please.

And suggestions for other countries that have "taken your breath away".

"The MV Kerlogue was an Irish ship attacked in World War II that has become the exemplar of neutral Irish ships during the war. The Kerlogue was a very small ship that was attacked by both sides and rescued people from both sides. She was almost sunk by a German mine and was strafed by the Royal Air Force, being left for dead. She rescued the Wild Rose of Liverpool and the survivors of the German destroyer Z27 and its escort, the survivors of which, in the latter case, were brought back to Ireland and interned in the Curragh Camp until the end of hostilities."

Well, Aglish Co Waterford is almost 150 KM from Aglish Co Tipperary.

I'll leave it to the Clueless Aussie Amadán, to continue his Wiki cut and paste, pointless rambling meanderings to places he has never visited.

Do not ask for suggestions from Cill Dara for one word to describe England! I'm sure it would be immediately removed by the Board censor in any case.

PPA tells that Tarrawanna post Office opened on 1st June 1999 & was renamed Towradgi PO on 20th August 1900. This post office reverted to it's original name of Tarrawanna on 1st March 1951. On the same day Towradgi East was renamed Towradgi. Towradgi East had opened sometime in 1950.

Towradgi is a small beach-side suburb approximately 5 km north of Wollongong with a population of about 3,100. It's name is derived from the Dharawal word Kow-radgi, meaning "guardian of the sacred stones" & on an early map it was called Towroger. Towradgi is served by electric trains at Towradgi railway station which opened in 1948.

Towradgi Train Station

Towradgi is bordered to the north by Corrimal, the west by Fernhill and Tarrawanna, and to the south by Fairy Meadow. The Pacific Ocean can be found to the east. Towradgi has also come to incorporate much of the former suburb of Reidtown (to the south-west), some of which has also been incorporated into Fairy Meadow.

A short distance out to sea from Towradgi is the point where the ship, Queen of Nations, was wrecked in the 1880s. The drunken captain, Samuel Bache, mistook the Mount Keira coal mine slag heap fires as the light on Port Jackson's South Head in Sydney, crashed the barque clipper vessel on 31 May 1881. The ship was transporting alcohol at the time, which explains this accident.
