earls-court-1910.jpg
GB 1910 Earls (Court?) postmark: 4th January 1910.
The Earls set sail from Rathmullan, a village on the shore of Lough Swilly in County Donegal, accompanied by ninety followers, many of them Ulster noblemen, and some members of their families. Several left their wives behind, hoping either to return or retrieve them later. The late Tomas Cardinal O’Fiaich, Archbishop of Armagh, gave a lecture at Rathmullan in September 1988 and recounted that the Earl of Tyrone allegedly “had a gold cross which contained a relic of the True Cross, and this he trailed in the water behind the ship, and according to O’Ciainain, it gave some relief from the storm” during the crossing to Quillebeuf-sur-Seine in Normandy, France. They finally reached the Continent on 4 October 1607. This supposed relic of the True Cross was probably a minor relic taken from that kept at Holy Cross Abbey, which they had previously visited en route to Kinsale in 1601.

Their destination was Spain, but they disembarked in France. The party proceeded overland to Spanish Flanders, some remaining in Leuven, while the main party continued to Italy. Tadhg Ó Cianáin (sometimes cited by historians as O'Keenan) subsequently described the journey in great detail. While the party were welcomed by many important officials in the Spanish Netherlands, he makes no mention of any negotiations or planning between the earls and the Spanish to start a new war to regain the earls' properties.

Ó Cianáin's diary is important as the only continuous and contemporaneous account of the Flight. Its original title, Turas na dTaoiseach nUltach as Éirinnthe departure of the Chiefs of Ulster from Ireland – has been changed since the creation of the more dramatic phrase "Flight of the Earls" to the latter's modern literal translation, Imeacht na nIarlaí.

Llanrwst is far away from Australia.

Llanrwst and its bridge have some history too (look it up on Google if you're interested).

It is amusing sitting eating an ice cream an watching the traffic on the narrow single lane bridge - it has a blind summit and if two vehicles meet at the top, one of them has to reverse off the bridge. In practice that was easier said than done as there was often more than one vehicle having to reverse! We did see it full - three vehicles each way in an impasse!

UAR-64-40m-feluca.jpg
United Arab Republic (Egypt) 1964 40m definitive, featuring boats on the Nile River.

Nothing like sailing up the Nile on a Saturday in your felucca!

Wikipedia wrote:A felucca (Arabic: فلوكة‎, Greek ἐφόλκιον) is a traditional wooden sailing boat used in the eastern Mediterranean—including around Malta and Tunisia—in Egypt and Sudan (particularly along the Nile and in protected waters of the Red Sea), and also in Iraq. Its rig consists of one or two lateen sails.

They are usually able to board ten passengers and the crew consists of two or three people.

Despite the availability of motorboats and ferries, feluccas are still in active use as a means of transport in Nile-adjacent cities like Aswan or Luxor. They are especially popular among tourists who can enjoy a quieter and calmer mood than motorboats have to offer.

Felucca is not to be confused with Fallujah. ;)
Fallujah, Arabic: ٱلْفَلُّوجَة‎, al-Fallūjah, Iraqi pronunciation: [el.fɐl.ˈluː.dʒɐ].

Fallujah is a city in the Iraqi province of Al Anbar, about 69km west of Baghdad on the River Euphrates. Fallujah dates from Babylonian times and was host to important Jewish academies for many centuries.

The city grew from a small town in 1947 to a population of 275,128 inhabitants in 2011. Within Iraq, it is known as the "city of mosques" for the more than 200 mosques found in the city and the surrounding villages.

In January 2014, the city was captured by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIS; sometimes called ISIL) and suffered major population loss. On 23 May 2016, Iraqi forces announced the beginning of their attempt to retake Fallujah from ISIS. On 26 June 2016 the city was declared fully liberated by the Iraqi army.

I enjoyed the Mystery Woman's mention of "fake gold" to spice up those gold mine sites. This was apparently commonplace in New Zealand also, and was termed "salting the mine."

The America's Cup is named after a boat, not the country. Alan Bond, a flamboyant businessman from Perth challenged the New York Yacht Club's undefeated holding of the cup in 1983. I recall he said "12 meter offshore racing is like standing in a cold shower tearing up 100 dollar bills". Against the odds he won and the America's Cup was defended off Fremantle in 1987.

Australia Post issued two sets of stamps:

I am sure there are many other sets of sailing related stamps, but the blurb on the back of this 1981 FDC mentions the America's Cup.

New Zealand 1971 Rutherford splits the Atom set. Birth centennial.
Wikipedia wrote:Ernest Rutherford, 1st Baron Rutherford of Nelson (1871 – 1937) was a New Zealand-born British physicist who came to be known as the father of nuclear physics. Encyclopædia Britannica considers him to be the greatest experimentalist since Michael Faraday (1791–1867). He also spent a substantial amount of his career abroad, in both Canada and the United Kingdom.

In early work, Rutherford discovered the concept of radioactive half-life, the radioactive element radon, and differentiated and named alpha and beta radiation. This work was performed at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. It is the basis for the Nobel Prize in Chemistry he was awarded in 1908 "for his investigations into the disintegration of the elements, and the chemistry of radioactive substances", for which he was the first Oceanian Nobel laureate, and the first to perform the awarded work in Canada.

Nice to see that 2012 Irish minisheet celebrating the 350th anniversary of Dhlí BoyleBoyle's Law .
One of the most outstanding modern mathematicians was Irishman William Rowan Hamilton.

Sir William Rowan Hamilton LL.D, DCL, MRIA (3 Aug1805 – 2 Sep 1865) was an Irish mathematician, Andrews Professor of Astronomy at Trinity College Dublin, and Royal Astronomer of Ireland. He worked in both pure mathematics and mathematics for physics. He made important contributions to optics, classical mechanics and algebra. Although Hamilton was not a physicist — he regarded himself as a pure mathematician — his work was of major importance to physics, particularly his reformulation of Newtonian mechanics, now called Hamiltonian mechanics. This work has proven central to the modern study of classical field theories such as electromagnetism, and to the development of quantum mechanics. In pure mathematics, he is best known as the inventor of quaternions.

.
A famous account of Hamilton's discovery/invention of quaternions is worth repeating:
Hamilton was looking for ways of extending complex numbers (which can be viewed as points on a 2-dimensional plane) to higher spatial dimensions. He failed to find a useful 3-dimensional system (in modern terminology, he failed to find a real, three-dimensional skew-field), but in working with four dimensions he created quaternions. According to Hamilton, on 16 Oct 1843 he was out walking along the Royal Canal in Dublin with his wife when the solution in the form of the equation
i² = j² = k² = ijk = −1
suddenly occurred to him; Hamilton then promptly carved this equation using his penknife into the side of the nearby Broom Bridge (which Hamilton called Brougham Bridge). This event marks the discovery of the quaternion group.
A snippet: it is common for spacecraft attitude-control systems to be commanded in terms of quaternions.

.
As a measure of his wide-ranging significant achievements, here is a view of the many links Wikipedia has for posts relating to Hamilton:

His work as a pure mathematician plays a major role in physics, another example of the "unreasonable effectiveness of mathematics in the natural sciences".
