The "new" computer is working well. I just have to tell it that my name is not David.
The old computer is working OK but is much slower than the new one.
The scanner is talking to the old computer.
Not so much with the new.
So I interchange between the two depending on what I need to do.

Terry Pratchett was a comedy genius with an incredibly vivid imagination and an ability to debunk almost every earthly organisation and social mores you can think of. Lord Vetinari's secretary was brilliant and based on every civil servant you can imagine, especially Yes Prime Minister's Sir Humphrey.

On second thoughts, perhaps I have got them back to front. I wonder which of the two of them was the more devious? There could be a University course on Social Science, with a thesis growing there.
I prefer to collect UK, British Commonwealth esp Pacific area ( not excluding West Indies/Canada ) and Western Europe. At the bottom of my zone of interest is Eastern Europe and communist countries.

Happy Day!

Today is the day New South Wales Covid restrictions are finally being eased. Lockdown in the Newcastle area was initially imposed for a week, from 5 August. That week has stretched, with multiple extensions, until 11 October. That's 69 days.

Availability of vaccines was problematic in our area, and testing was also problematic at the start of the lockdown period. Now the daily new case numbers are still high in our area, but the "economy versus health" policy by the State Government (especially the new Premier) is "let's ease restrictions now!" Most people I know in our area will be very cautious for the next few weeks, even though many of them are now double-vaccinated, and even the younger ones have virtually all had their first vaccination...

We will be anxiously and cautiously watching daily reporting of numbers of cases over the next fortnight(*) at least.

/RogerE :D

(*) Australian/British English "fortnight" = US English "two weeks". ;)

Current Covid statistics underlying remarks in my previous post:

Four week totals:

It is not easy to find mortality data — presumably deliberately "hidden".

Four items of mail arrived today. Two postcards addressed to you know who from you know who. 8-)
and two letters addressed to that Terry fellow.

Maggie thanks the mystery woman for the postcards sent. :D
Terry thanks Australia Post for the junk mail and the government for the boring letter.

TMW bought the Kalgoorlie AP issued postcard at Geraldton post office and then waited until she got to Kalgoorlie before posting it. 8-) Not sure what the building on the postcard is. Guessing that it is the former council chambers.

Whilst it is still Monday, this is appropriate. My phone reminded me this morning that three years ago this week we were in Budapest. We're thinking we'll have to try to go back again when we can.

More about Wave Rock, shown on Wonder Woman Wendy's postcard.

Katter Kich = Wave Rock, Noongar Country
Katter Kich = Wave Rock, Noongar Country
.
Wikipedia wrote:Wave Rock, also known as Katter Kich by the Noongar, is a natural rock formation that is shaped like a tall breaking ocean wave. The "wave" is about 15m high and around 110m long. It forms the north side of a solitary hill, which is known as "Hyden Rock". This hill, which is a granite inselberg, lies about 3km east of the small town of Hyden and 296km east-southeast of Perth, Western Australia. Wave Rock and Hyden Rock are part of a 160ha nature reserve, Hyden Wildlife Park. More than 100,000 tourists visit every year...

Wave Rock has cultural significance to Ballardong people (part of the Noongar grouping). Local people believe that wave rock was a creation of the Rainbow Serpent, and was created in her wake by dragging her swollen body over the land after she had consumed all of the water in the land. They respect this area as an icon of cultural learning, with a moral from this Dreamtime tale to be remembered for life. The rock is part of a dreaming trail that extends from the south coast near Augusta to the Great Victoria Desert country to the north east. Other features along the trail include Mulka's Cave, Puntapin Rock, Jilakin Rock, Jitarning Rock and Dumbleyung Lake.

Geomorphology
Wikipedia wrote: Wave Rock is a spectacular example of a flared slope — a concave-upward or -inward bedrock surface that is typically found around the base of inselbergs, bornhardts, and granitic boulders and also on their higher slopes. Flared slopes like Wave Rock are particularly well developed in granitic landforms of south-western and southern Australia.

The flared slopes are argued to have formed by the concentrated chemical weathering around the base of an inselberg by groundwater. The chemical weathering of the bedrock by groundwater produces a concave-upward or –inward pocket of deeply weathered, relatively loose, and disaggregated bedrock within the formerly solid bedrock base of an inselberg. The land surface around an inselberg is underlain by deeply weathered bedrock. When the land surface is lowered by erosion, the pocket of deeply weathered disaggregated bedrock is also removed to produce a flared slope such as Wave Rock. It has also been argued that flared slopes can form during the erosion of slopes of any inselbergs...

Some reflections
• The technical geomorphological information gives greater appreciation and understanding of the site. Is that information accessibly provided for the hundred thousand tourists who visit the site annually?
• Is the significance and importance of the site within indigenous culture accessibly provided for those many tourists?
• Is the site managed in a way that respects its geomorphological significance and its cultural significance, and protects it from negative impacts of high volume tourism?
