Since getting the long lens, I haven't been closer than more than a half mile from a Bald Eagle, but I will keep trying.

Note how you can see the tree limb behind the Turkey vulture's head, straight through the super developed nostrils.

Not only can they pick up scents from up high in the air, but they also have a highly developed olfactory bulb in their brain.

When we started our New Zealand tour in 2016 I knew that I would see some non-European birds, but never realised how many European introductions there would be, making it ‘just like home’ but not.

Paradise ducks, same location.

While we occasional had a yellowhammer in our garden in Norfolk, even drinking from the bath, they were usually seen in fields and hedgerow, so it was nice to see this pair in the park.

But of course the paradise ducks were new to us.

Never go by memory! They are, of course, Paradise Shelducks, unusual in the bird world in that the female has the more flamboyant colouring than the mostly black male.

A bird that norvic would be familiar with: a Blackbird (male) seen during a 5km limited walk yesterday here in Melbourne. We do get Song Thrush in some places in Melbourne, but they're much harder to find.

They are close, yes, and have similar habitat preferences - and singing ability :)

Here's a Song Thrush that I saw in Melbourne Zoo, back in 2014. Wild bird, not caged.
SongThrush2014ZooSB.jpg
Both the Song Thrush and Blackbird are UK imports from the 1860's when settlers wanted birds to remind themselves of the 'old country' (add Starling, Myna, Sparrows and Mallards to the list)

We had imports from Europe too, that reminded people of the old country, and they pushed the quail and bluebirds, among others, almost out of existence. Hindsight.... :(

A couple of local Corella species :)

First up is a Long-billed Corella. They have the nickname 'cut-throat' due to the orange throat feathers.

LBCorella SB.jpg

Second Corella species is the Little Corella: no throat color and a smaller bill size. These birds are comics, and love to 'play' and twirl on powerlines by their beaks, amongst other behaviours

As we start a new month and I look back, instead of forwards, time for another On this day post from 2016.

As the rain started with the wind coming from Tasmania, I covered the camper and headed back for some coffee. Head down I nearly trod on a pair of these Banded Dotterell on Okarito landing strip, NewZealand.

Went looking for kotuku, the white heron but didn’t see any.

I’d been watching a flock of white-fronted tern (Tara) lifting off ahead of the tide, on the other side of the inlet. Also on the landing strip we’re this Variable Oystercatcher (toreapango) - this one an All-Black - and pair of Paradise Shelduck (Putangitangi), the one the female.

None of the birds was at all concerned by my presence. The dotterells hunched down against the wind, but stayed as I got out the camera, focussed, and took about a dozen pictures, so as to have a couple of good ones.

Is that because of the camouflage or because they are scarce?

Yes, both shy and that they keep well hidden

Here's a sneaky species that I photographed earlier today, a Fan-tailed Cuckoo about to eat lunch. Cuckoos lay their eggs in the nests of other birds, and leave them to do the rearing of their young.
