I remember buying these when I was about 11 or 12 and being absolutely fascinated by them:

They did rather go over the top after these, though.
I still collect Sierra Leone, but only up to independence now.

They do OK. I took about 6 peppers from a store-bought bag of them and dried and then planted the seeds (after we ate the peppers). They came up like weeds. I must have about 200 small plants. Last year we had about 12 plants and had a very good harvest of yellow, orange and red peppers.

Interesting. So wine is now equal to beer consumption? When I got old enough to drink in the early 70s, only toffs drank wine. It was unknown in working-class homes, and only a rare treat for 'special occasions' amongst the middle class. Then it started to get cheaper when the UK joined the EEC, and it gradually started to creep into everyday homes. Nobody knew anything about varieties of wine, so you started on Mateus Rose (and stuck a candle into the empty bottle) or Hirondelle, or Blue Nun, and even that was regarded as a bit effete and pretentious - men drank beer, girls drank cider or babycham, older men drank whisky, and older women drank things unheard of today, like 'rum and black' or 'gin and lime'.
Pubs didn't sell wine at all. I remember the first 'wine bar' opening in Liverpool in the early 70s - it was incredibly smart and trendy (and expensive).
Lager was just gaining a foothold in pubs, probably because the alternatives were awful keg bitters, like Watney's Red Barrel or Whitbread Trophy.
A couple of years ago, my wife ordered a 'Cinzano and lemonade' in a pub, for old times sake. The young barmaid had no idea what we were talking about!

How things change - today's normal will look pretty weird in 50 years time.

One of the pubs in our Shropshire village was a pioneer dining pub in the early 70's. They used to get a lot of folk coming over from Birmingham in the days when petrol was cheap and the drink driving laws lax. They used to stock a good range of wines (including Mateus Rose).

I thought Hirondelle came a little later.

Hirondelle was certainly MY first, and definitely before we got married in 73.
The others I recall were Don Cortez (rough) and Lutomer Riesling (very rough)
Still not a great wine lover myself, prefer a nice G&T.

Being almost tea-total I'm not a wine drinker either, I just remember some of the fancy names on the wine bottles from way back then. Chateau neuf du Pape etc., etc. I used to have a collection of the old labels back in the days when you could soak the labels off the bottles and I'd not got any stamps to soak!

Looking back, I think the growth in wine sales since the 70s is due more to the proliferation of foreign holidays, rather than price. Millions of people went for the first time to the Med countries where wine was the norm, cheap and plentiful, and rather liked it.

I used to live in London and we'd go quite often on the booze day trips British Rail / Network South-East had quite cheaply. Brought back lots of wines mostly, buying sometimes by look of the label or the bottle (wonky - is that J.P. Chenet or something like that?)...

Hi Bill,
We had a very similiar situation in Ireland at the time - and the same initial wines :)

I remember too the first wine bar opening in Cork. It tried to be very fancy, but it became a late night haunt (something to do with the wine licence) and people, not being used to wine, drank it like beer!! :o
You can imagine the scenes.

The only booze cruises we had were to and from the UK, when duty-free was still in existence. And they are probably back again after the UK leaving the EU.

Cheers! Hic!
