The 14th annual Stampboards Australian Football League (AFL) Footy Tipping Contest is now open for business for the 2021 season, and all members GLOBALLY are welcome to join in the fun.
For the first 10 years, Norm (fromdownunder) ran this competition and put in 1000's of hours of his time in the process. Norm decided to "hang up his boots" in 2017 and I volunteered to take over the running of the competition .... not sure I can ever fill Norm's boots though!
2020 was a year unlike any other and the Covid-19 pandemic had a major impact on the AFL and tipping as it did on pretty much every aspect of life.
Hopefully 2021 will not be as trying and difficult as last year but there is still a possibility of the season being disrupted and as such I have made a couple of alterations to the competition rules.
You don't have to have any knowledge of Australian Rules Football to be able to enter this competition. The winners in the first 2 years had never seen a game of Australian Rules Football between them in their life!
Indeed there have been winners from outside of Australia, meaning anyone, anywhere in the world can win!
Over the first 13 editions of this competition, there have been 12 different winners with just the one repeat winner!
The AFL season runs for over 5 months with 23 rounds of tipping involved. It would be appreciated that members only enter the competition if they intend to continue competing for the entire season.
Between rounds banter and discussion is actively encouraged, so this thread is used for all things Australian Rules Football related as well as for tipping.
We will have 3 prizes which will be awarded to the top 3 tipsters at the end of the season. These are well worth the time that it takes to tip each week. Thank you to the 3 prize sponsors for their many years of continued support for this competition.
The prizes are as follows :
First Prize : A $A150.00 Gift Voucher from Glen Stephens, which can be used to purchase anything from http://www.glenstephens.com/rarity.html or that Glen has listed on the sales forum here on Stampboards - http://tinyurl.com/StampDeals
Second Prize : A $A100 e-voucher for any of the 75,000+ Nett Priced stamp items on fletches1 huge website - http://stampmall.com.au - good for members globally. A fantastic prize for collectors of ANYTHING philatelic. Discount and sale offers on there each month!
Third Prize : Kevin Morgan has again kindly donated an annual "Stamp News" subscription within Australia valued at $99.50 (An overseas winner only needs to pay the extra post cost) OR a THREE Year Digital subscription globally - https://stampnews.net.au/
Members are most welcome to offer up small spot prizes for any particular round throughout the season, should they wish to add some extra fun and competition.
If you wish to offer something for a round, or for a special reason, please post in the thread, including the terms and conditions of the particular competition, and a scan of your proposed prize then at the completion of the round, please post the winner ASAP. It is preferred that the person offering the competition looks after it themself, but if any help is needed then I will try to assist.
It would be good to see a few of these competitions offering small prizes throughout the season, particularly in the second half of the season. This will keep interest going for those who may not be in contention for the main prizes.
The 2021 AFL season starts on Thursday March 18th at 7.25pm AEDT. So don't wait, there is no skill required to play and it is completely free, with the chance of winning great prizes!
The Rules :
A list of the next round of AFL matches will be listed after the conclusion of the each round, Round 1 will be posted directly after this post.
The full 2021 AFL fixture can be found here : http://afl.com.au/fixture. Please be aware, times and venues for matches have only been made for the first 6 rounds at this stage.
All you need to do is tip which team you think will win each of the matches to be played each round.
One point will be awarded per correct tip or for a drawn match .... draws can not be tipped. A drawn match will be counted as a win.
If anybody tips all winners in any given Round, 2 Bonus Points will be awarded to that person. To earn bonus points you must have entered tips for all matches that round before the scheduled start time of the first game of the round.
The total number of points will be aggregated over the entire season and the prizes will be awarded to the 3 tipsters with the most points accumulated over the 198 games of the season.
I will post results of all matches, the progressive AFL ladder, a progressive list of where you stand on the Stampboards tipping contest ladder and the draw for the following round after the conclusion of each round.
All tips for the round must be posted in the one post on this thread. Tipping posts are not to be edited. Once you enter your tips, they can not be changed, so make sure you check your tips carefully before posting.
If you forget to tip a match, you may make another post to include that match tip, so long as it is before the round starts.
Any tips entered after the start of a match (or matches) will score zero points for those matches. There will be no exceptions! So don't leave tipping until the last minute! If you miss the first match(es) of a round, you may post tips after the start of the round but any matches that have started count for zero.
Stampboards time-coding will be used to judge exactly when an entry is made, so even if you are 1 second late, your tip won't count....no exceptions!
If a member does not post their tips in a particular round, they will be awarded the rounded down average score of all tippers who posted tips for the round. As example, if the average score for the round is 4.9, non tippers will be awarded 4 points.
Failure to post in 3 consecutive rounds, without providing a reason for not posting, will see you removed from the competition.
If a member knows they are going to be away, and unable to enter tips at some point during the season, it is fine to post tips in advance....please ensure that they clearly show which round(s) they are for. Be aware that the scheduled draw can change at very short notice if a Covid-19 outbreak occurs.
Members can join the competition at any point during the season. Any member joining after Round 1 will be given an aggregate total of the rounded down average score for each of the rounds that have already occurred before they joined the competition.
If there is a tie for any of the prize positions at the end of the season, the winner will be chosen by a count back system as follows :
First tiebreaker – Fewest bonus points earned during the season. (i.e. most individual correct tips).
Second tiebreaker (if needed) – Good old fashioned count back, starting with most rounds with 9 correct tips, then most with 8 correct, then 7 correct etc.
Third tiebreaker (if needed) – Most correct tips in Round 23, then most in Round 22, then Round 21, etc.
Final tiebreaker (if needed) – If by some miracle they have tipped identical totals every one of the 23 rounds (don't ask me to calculate the odds on that!), the winner will be the person who placed their tips earliest for Round 23.
Running this competition is time consuming and I have a very busy life lately as well as dealing with some on-going health concerns. I will do my best to try and get updates posted as quickly as possible but please be patient if there is a delay.
If you have any reason to contact me regarding the competition, you may post here in this thread but I highly recommend sending a board email directly to me. I will attempt to reply quickly, but there will be times when my life may cause there to be some delay, so please be patient.
Also, please understand that I am human and as such, am prone to make mistakes. If you believe I have made an error, please post on the thread, indicating what you feel is incorrect, and I will look into it ASAP, and make corrections where needed.
Best of luck to everyone who enters and lets have some fun while following the 2021 AFL season!
