Even though I didn't know Norm as a person it feels very sad that we won't see him on this board anymore.

His thread eBay and Other On-Line Dreamers was and still is my favourite on here, whenever I need a chuckle I go to that thread and see what's been put up.

Having been here from day one he's one of the few you expect to be on the board forever, He will be greatly missed on here by everyone i'm sure.

R.I.P fromdownunder ( Norm ) :(

Such sad news.

Norm was a stalwart of this site and always had a balanced view on most subjects (except the dreamers  ). For a Geelong supporter he was OK.

Thanks for all you have given over the years Norm.

I have no words!

Norm was one of the early members here and a stalwart of the Moderator team. I recall many good times and sometimes copious drinking with Norm and Stampboards friends over the years.

From memory I first met him at a Stampboards dinner in Melbourne during the 2010 stamp show, then at a number of similar dinners since then in both Melbourne and Canberra.

The photos and commentary above here brings back good memories and I was looking forward to catching up with him again at the Melbourne Stamp Show next year. Unfortunately, it won’t be the same without him.

Our sincere condolences to Norm’s family and friends.

R.I.P. Norm.

Several years ago Norm used to trade in boxes of his surplus stuff against collections from our lists.

Fletches was working with us at 21st Century Auctions at that time, and a lot of Norms "cast-offs" went to him to help start his business.

Not sure if Fletches1 knew where it had come from. 8-)

Norm accumulated a LOT of spares, being a true Worldwide collector.

He had an absolutely massive carton of OFF paper world stamps on hand, and I was looking for such a genuine lot to giveaway in our ''WIN A MILLION STAMPS - A BEDFUL.''

https://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=20112

In his usual generosity Community spirit, he named a price, and I told him that was way too low and paid him several times that. We ran the comp, and got a ton of entries.

Norm was delighted with the result, and raised the story main times. :)

To celebrate our next major milestone, I was thinking aloud among the Volunteer Moderator Group as to what we could do, and fromdownunder (Norm) mentioned he still had "The Box" sitting on his floor he was wondering what to do with.

"The Box" was a large carton filled with off-paper stamps Norm had accumulated over the years. As many know, Norm is one of a near extinct breed - the true "Whole World" collector. His aim I think he once posted, is to try and collect one example of EVERY simplified stamp from EVERY country.

So when buying collections and mixed lots and stockbooks etc, Norm took out and kept the ones he did not have already, and in general I gather the balance then were tossed into "The Box". And "The Box" over time got larger, and larger, and larger ......... :)

Anyway, I did a deal with him, and Norm was happy with the outcome, and mailed it up, and that box will soon be someone else's "Box"!

What is in there? Well even Norm did not really know, as he'd been assembling it for many years and had lost track.

All I can say was that when spread out on the bed as you can see, it was several inches thick in places with stamps, and off paper stamps are incredibly dense - a small handful is way over 1000 stamps.

The vast majority looked used to me, but I did see some mint, even MUH imprint blocks among it.

Taking a look at them when spread out on my bed to photograph, I'd state the obvious that Australia and AAT and earlier "States" component was a lot stronger than you'd get, if an American or a British collector had assembled them, for obvious locale reasons.

There looked to be HUNDREDS of Australia KGV heads spread around there .. with lots of 1d reds etc sighted. Norm said he thinks a complete KGV used booklet pane went into "The Box" at some point at the time he added all the other KGV heads.

I also saw quite a few Kangaroos - and even noted several 2/- 3rd watermarks, which of course are $35 stamps EACH these days.

As you can see from the photo, I saw things like postally used GB blocks of 10 of the £5 Machins, and blocks of other different £5 types, and even some of the seldom seen massive £10 GB "Britannia" mega high values.

They are all in "The Box", along with higher face values from Australia, NZ, USA, Hong Kong, Canada - and you name it!

It is really heartwarming to read such great stories and reminiscences written about Norm - fromdownunder. He was very highly thought of.

I never knew him or met him, but he's been a big part of the Stampboards family for so many years that all members can't help but be touched by the kind words written and saddened at his passing.

My condolences to his family.

Didn't know him personally, but I was aware that he was a personality on this forum. I like much his thread of the 'ebay online dreamers', very fun indeed...

Good Lord – just saw this thread now and hadn't expected to see this logging into Stampboards this evening.

Condolences, thoughts and prayers to his family and friends.

As others have said, he was well known by many on these boards, whether you may have met him in person or not. Always such a helpful gentleman too, who was, I am sure, an inspiration in philately to many the globe over. I remember his advice well when I first joined some years back.

[Reaches for the hanky to dry his his tired eyes].
