- NSW, VIC and SA split border region.
I can still do it from memory. Go on, give it a go and draw the NSW, VIC and SA border. Not hard was it - straight line down.
Correct? Surprisingly to me.... no!
I was looking at the border areas on google maps and as you zoom in the border splits!
When first surveyed, which took years, they got it wrong on one side of the Murray River. From the north the border is actually correct, but from the south the border is about 3km further west taking about 1,000 sq km off SA and making 11km of Murray River frontage confusing.
This apparently was the first border determined in fledgling Australia... and it's wrong.
Never ever heard of this or the controversy that followed it for near 60 years.
Something else I never knew - the Murray along the NSW/VIC border is ALL in NSW, it is not a 50:50 split. VIC ends on the southern bank of the river.
But when it gets to the SA/VIC wrong border, they find that they have 11km of Murray River that is all theirs (to halfway across) and SA has the other half.
Gotta love history!
