WTB Australia 1960 Centenary Melbourne Cup FDCs

Post by BigSaint »

I have had this need to collect as many different fdc's postmarked on 12th October 1960 from different post offices around Australia.

I currently have around 400. The cachet is not important but the postmark is. If members have any they would like to part with that I don't have please reply.

Below is a very small sample of what I am looking for.
Image
A Wesley Cover Service FDC, postmarked at Essendon, has taken me over 20 years to find. The stamp was designed by Frank Manly & he lived in Essendon.
Image
A Royal FDC postmarked GPO Melbourne signed by winning jockey W A (Billy) Smith.

Thank you

Brad :) :) :)

This is a "Hermes Cover", it was the Post Office generic fdc at the time & came in two colour combinations. Red & Blue as you have displayed & Buff (I prefer to call it gold) & Blue.

Here is a recent acquisition postmarked "Cressy Tasmania". I just love the address "Billopp Cressy". There was cover addressed to Perth Tasmania on another thread to a big rural property which was well known in the area. Cressy is about 20kms south of Launceston.

So please keep looking for me.

Archer who is pictured on the stamp for the 100th Running of the Melbourne Cup came from Nowra, a town on the south coast of NSW, a distance by road today of about 500 miles to Melbourne. Legend has it that he walked that distance from Nowra to run in & win the Melbourne Cup in 1860 & 1861. They even made a film about it, "Archer's Adventure" starring a very young "Our Nicole".

Now I hate to spoil a good story with the facts but the newspapers of the day reported him coming off the ship from Sydney with all the other Sydney horses.

So I was very pleased to pickup this cover the other day:
Image
Unfortunately it is not first day & it is not quite Nowra, but it is the Naval P O at Nowra next door. It is the closest I have seen in over 20 years of looking. It looks like one of those letters tourists send home to mum with all the different stamps they can lay their hands on. It is paying the correct airmail rate to the US too, 2/5.

Incidentally in 1978 the Melbourne Cup was won by Arwon, which is Nowra spelt backwards.

A Royal fdc from the closed post office of Yallourn East - PO 1/4/1951; closed 31/8/1970 (per PPA).
Image
This post office would have closed due to the expansion of the open cut coal mine at Yallourn. Yallourn, Victoria was a company town in Victoria, Australia built between the 1920s and 1950s to house employees of the State Electricity Commission of Victoria, who operated the nearby Yallourn Power Station complex. However, expansion of the adjacent open-cut brown coal mine led to the closure and removal of the town in the 1980s.
Image
Brad :)

PS A special thanks to Stampboarder "bjslark" who assisted me in obtaining the cover from an ebayer who would not ship to Australia.

Here is one of those "almost a fdc":
Image
What I surmise happened here is that the sender wrote "first day cover" on it & then posted it. It either missed the "last mail" on 12th October 1960 or an over keen postal worker changed the date on the postmarking machine when he finished his shift at 9.30pm on the 12th October 1960, meaning that the cover was dated 13th October 1960 with a time of 4.30am.

Hi Brad.

I just had a quick look and all I can find so far are two Royal FDC's,
both postmarked from Sydney. :(

I guess you would have these, a green and brown colour, and a chestnut? and brown colour. GPO. Sydney.

I'll keep an eye out. I'm sure I've seen others somewhere in my cover collection somewhere.
Surfing stamps and covers, KED VIII, and Newfoundland.
Europa and Canada and any comic related stamps.

I love these ones which possibly are sent home by tourists:
Image
They do a fdc add different stamps to make up the overseas rate & then the postal clerk cancels them all with the fdi postmarker when in this case the only stamp that was issued on November 2, 1960 was the Queensland Stamp Centenary.

Back in 1960 there were 11 post offices that had "First Day of Issue Postmarks"

Adelaide GPO
Brisbane GPO
Canberra City
Clarence Street, Sydney
Geelong
Hobart GPO
Melbourne GPO
Newcastle
Perth GPO
Philatelic Bureau, Melbourne
Sydney GPO

A big difference to the numbers in the 1980's!

A recent pick up of mine on ebay coming all the way back from the Netherlands:
Image
This fdi postmark was first used on 1st October 1959 & was used up until 30th June 1965 when the large dateline was altered to a small dateline. For the 1960 Melbourne Cup issue I have only seen 4 examples of this postmark & 3 of them are in my collection.

I just love these covers that look like they were sent home by a tourist with all the different stamps. Of course this one is not fdi but rather a late usage (5th February 1962), however it has the unusual address of Swaziland. I picked this up from a an ebayer in the UK, so it is much travelled:

New additions are coming thick & fast at the moment. Here is a Van Dahl cachet which I have been looking for "20 years" & found for me by Stampboarder "The Pom":
Image
https://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=42000
Al Van Dahl (1883 - 1954) was born in Holland & emigrated to the US in 1911. His FDC design of letters encircling the globe was used for numerous US stamps up to the 70's (as well as many other countries in Australia).

Hi Browny

Some of these colours can vary a little depending on how much ink was in the printing machine, but I think the colour combo you are referring to is this one:
Image
But there is this light blue as well:

With the horse colour date in line with Royal insignia.

&

Thank you Mike, but my German is not great & when I hit the translation into English, it looked like it was sending me to ebay UK :?

In regards to Ararat I do have that Post Office & there is a little story to it.
Image
Leslie Grant was a publisher of fdc cachets & a distributor of Wide World, then Wesley & then Excelsior fdcs to collectors in mainly western Victoria & rural South Australia. He ran a business called "Quality Postage Stamps" from 41 Lambert Street in Ararat. It appears he also had customers outside those areas.
Image
Grant's first fdc cachet was the Queen Elizabeth 3½d red on 21st April 1953. He continued to spasmodically produce his own covers inter-twined with Wide World designs. By 1960 he began to use Wesley Cover Service fdcs back stamping them with his address details, although he still managed to do a few of his own up till 1965 with a generic Queen Elizabeth II design.

Not quite first day, third day in fact, but nice commercial usage of the Melbourne Cup stamp, postmarked at the home of winter racing in Perth, Belmont Park.

Following the big annual May "jumps" racing carnival at Warrnambool, it seems prophetic that I should find this one yesterday:

A recent pick up from eBay :

A WCS fdc postmarked at Rosebery, a southern inner city suburb of Sydney, NSW.

Rosebery was once the site of Rosebery Racecourse, which first opened as a pony track in 1906. Race meetings held by the Associated Racing Clubs became as popular as those at Randwick, especially in the 1920s. The track became an army camp during World War II. After the war, it became a training track used by the Sydney Turf Club.
