Sydney machine slogan cancel number 16.
The Millions Club was founded in 1912 with the aim of making Sydney the first Australian city to reach a population of one million. It was founded by Arthur Rickard, a property salesman and developer, who enlisted the support of a number of leading politicians and businessmen. It was linked to the youth and child migration programmes of the Big Brother Movement and Dr Barnardo's Homes. The Millions Club later became The Sydney Club. It was based in a property at 122 Pitt Street, Sydney. :)

CRIBB & FOOTE

Sydney 8 Machine cancel - "Keep Australia Clean - By Plant Quarantine".
Some information on the addressee, as there are a lot of covers addressed to them in Rod Perry's batch of covers he sent to me.
Image
Cribb & Foote Ltd, Ipswich’s leading department store for over 125 years. Founded by Benjamin Cribb (1807–1874) and John Clark Foote (1822–1895), and subsequently operated by generations of Cribbs and Footes. Initially trading as the ‘London Stores’, Cribb was sole owner up to 1855, when he partnered with Foote. From 1925 to 1937, it was under Cribb family ownership until it became a public company in 1937.

They were a general merchant and draper that became a major department store and Ipswich landmark, specialising in fashion amongst a comprehensive range of goods.

The store occupied a prime position on the corner of Brisbane and Bell Streets in the main shopping district of Ipswich’s CBD. The site is so well known that when the shop burnt down in 1985, a new central landmark, Ipswich City Square, was built in its place. Over the 19th and 20th centuries, Cribb & Foote developed franchise stores in Brisbane, Rockhampton, Warwick, and Gatton, but the Ipswich store was always the jewel in their crown.

The original Ipswich store was built in 1849 and stood until 1985. In 1972, the company was bought out by Walter Reid & Company—following an offer made in 1971—and was registered as ‘Cribb & Foote Pty Ltd’. In 1977, it was relaunched as ‘Reids’.

According to Trove, Box 469 Sydney was held by John Shorter Pty. Limited who were selling Royal Doulton bone china.

A search in Trove for "Box 469 Sydney", including the double quotes, will find some references to this company. (As I am on my phone I cannot see how to make a link to the article).

Thank you Nina for this information. The "John Shorter" name does ring a bell as one of an iconic Aussie business.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Shorter_Pty_Ltd
John Shorter Pty Ltd, commonly known as Shorters, was an Australian manufacturers’ importing agency company, best known as the Australasian agent for the British ceramics firms Royal Doulton and Mintons. John Shorter Pty Ltd remained the Doulton agents in Australia until 1979, when Royal Doulton Australia was established.

John Shorter was born in Staffordshire, England, in 1853 and came to Sydney in 1879 to install the Doulton display in the Garden Palace for the Sydney International Exhibition. He died on 30 January 1942.

Mansfield, Victoria & I am told the date of the postmark is 19th October 1960, so just a week after issue:
Image
Mansfield is a small town in the foothills of the Victorian Alps.. It is approximately 180 kilometres north-east of Melbourne by road.

Mansfield, originally known as Mount Battery, was at the boundary of a number of pastoral runs, and a township was surveyed in 1851 and named after Mansfield in Nottinghamshire, England. Settlement came after the discovery of gold nearby and the Post Office opened on 1 January 1858.

The railway to Mansfield arrived in the town from Tallarook in 1891, being closed on November 18, 1978. The last passenger service was on May 28, 1977.

The Electricity Supply Association of Australia is now known as the Energy Networks Australia (ENA) & is the peak national body representing gas distribution and electricity transmission and distribution businesses throughout Australia.

As of 10 November 2016 the Energy Networks Association began trading as Energy Networks Australia. Energy Networks Australia commenced operations as the Energy Networks Association (ENA) in January 2004. It replaced the Australian Gas Association’s Network Operators Committee and the Electricity Supply Association of Australia’s Distribution Directorate, and assumed the representational functions of these two associations on energy network issues. In January 2016, the Energy Supply Association (esaa) became jointly owned and managed by the Australian Energy Council and Energy Networks Australia and its Board now consists of representatives of the Australian Energy Council and Energy Networks Australia.

Collaroy Beach at "High Noon":
Image
Image
Terry (Ubobo) tells me that Hopson & Tobin show that Collaroy Beach is the only NSW postmark starting with "Collar" that has a time in front of the dateline.

Collaroy Beach is part of Collaroy, a suburb in northern Sydney which is 22 kilometres north-east of the Sydney CBD. This area was originally part of Narrabeen but was renamed after the S.S. Collaroy ran aground on the beach in 1881.

Collaroy Beach Post Office opened on 12 February 1923. Collaroy Plateau Post Office opened on 1 April 1949 and closed in 1988. Collaroy Plateau West Post Office opened on 1 November 1967 and was renamed Collaroy Plateau in 1996.

Rosewood, Queensland - 9th November 1960:
Image
Image
Thank you to Terry (Ubobo) for confirming the identity of this postmark as Rose Wood / Rosewood. It seems spelling is optional.

Rosewood is a small town and locality in the Bremer Valley, Queensland within the local government area of City of Ipswich.

The town of Rosewood is located 61 kilometres west of the Brisbane CBD & about 21 kilometres west of Ipswich with a population of just under 3000. The origin of the suburb name is believed to be derived from the Rosewood (Acacia harpophylla) or the Dysoxylum (a Mahogany species, referred locally as a rosewood despite bearing little relation) tree or shrub, both commonly found in the south-east Queensland region at the time of Rosewood's settlement.

Bundamba, Queensland:
Image
Image
Image
Dated October 1960.
Terry (Ubobo) kindly confirmed this one as Bundamba.

Bundamba is a large suburb of City of Ipswich & only a cople of kms east of Ipswich CBD. The origin of the suburb name is from the Yugarabul Aboriginal language meaning place of the stone axe.

The Redbank - Bundamba Loop Line comprised a series of railway sidings serving coal mines in the area. A spur line splits from the main track at Bundamba station, and heads to the Swanbank Power Station. Steam trains operated by Queensland Pioneer Steam Railway run monthly between Bundamba Racecourse station and Swanbank station. However the racecourse has since been renamed Ipswich. :)

Bogantungan is a town in the locality of Willows in the Central Highlands Region, Queensland. The town is 930 kilometres (580 mi) north west of the state capital Brisbane and 350 kilometres (220 mi) west of the regional city of Rockhampton.

The Central Western railway line passes through the town which is served by the Bogantungan railway station. The small number of houses in the town are located around the railway station.

As the railway headed west from Rockhampton, a number of towns sprang up at the head of line. These towns were only intended to service the work of the crews laying the rails, but some have lasted over a century. Bogantungan was one of these. It became a town of some thousands of people, with around 30 hotels. After the line moved on, so did most of the town, to form the next settlement.

Bogantungan Post Office opened on 8 July 1881 and closed on 22 December 1982 (per PPA).

Wowan Queensland:
Image
Image
Terry (Ubobo) helped me identify this one as Wowan from the Rod Perry stock.

Wowan is a small rural town and locality in the Shire of Banana in Central Queensland. Wowan and the surrounding area has a population of 338. The town takes its name from the Wowan railway station, which in turn was named from the Aboriginal word for Australian brush-turkey. The town was settled in 1912. Wowan State School opened on 1 June 1900, 12 years before the town settled, how did that happen?

PPA says the Post Office opened here in June 1915. :)

Greenacre, NSW:
ImageImage
Kainnikanada confirmed this as Greenacre NSW from the Rod Perry collection.

Greenacre is located 17 kilometres south-west of the Sydney CBD & is a part of the South-western Sydney region. This area was previously known as East Bankstown. When the first road went through the area, an acre of land was cleared for cultivation. The contrast to its surrounding area led to it being referred to as the 'Green Acre'. In 1909, Greenacre Park Estate became one of the first subdivisions in the area.

PPA says the Post Office opened as East Bankstown/Bankstown East on 1/8/1946 & was renamed Greenacre PO 1/9/1956. :)

South Yarra, Victoria from the Rod Perry stock:
Image
Image
12th or 22nd October 1960 :?:
South Yarra is an inner suburb of Melbourne, Victoria, 4 km south-east of Melbourne's CBD.

The area was settled by European settlers in the 1830s, around the time of the establishment of Melbourne. During the 1840s, it became popular with wealthy citizens of Melbourne as a suburban retreat from the town. Several large houses were built and, together with neighbouring Toorak, it maintained its upper-class reputation into the post-Second World War period. South Yarra Post Office was open briefly in 1854, then reopened on 21 June 1858.

The main shopping region of South Yarra runs along Toorak Road and Chapel Street. Trade along these two arteries are focused on trendy and upmarket shopping, restaurants, nightclubs and cafe culture.

South Yarra is also home to some of Melbourne's most prestigious residential addresses. Residential land price records (per square metre) have been set by properties in Domain Road, Walsh Street and Fairlie Court.

I'm delighted you're having so much fun with that 5d Archer lot, Brad.

You're going to love even more the second tranche, presently under construction.

One minor "thing", if you don't mind correcting: For the record, the material is from my stock, rather than "collection".

South Yarra machine slogan cancel - 25th October 1960.
This cover addressed to Professor D P Derham from Melbourne Church of England Girls Grammar School (MCEGGS) as it was in 1960 but now Melbourne Girls Grammar School (MGGS) whose crest appears on the reverse of the cover.

Melbourne Girls' Grammar was founded in 1893, as a private school in Domain Road, South Yarra, by Miss Emily Hensley and Miss Alice Taylor. In 1900, the School moved to its current location in Anderson Street, and in 1903 it became the first girls' school to be owned by the Anglican Diocese of Melbourne.

Merton Hall, the senior school of Melbourne Girls' Grammar, was named after the house in Cambridge, England, where Newnham College began.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Melbourne_Girls_Grammar
The addressee is a person of note. Sir David Plumley Derham (1920-1985), lawyer and vice-chancellor, was born on 13 May 1920 at Armadale. After attending Trinity Grammar School and Scotch College, David entered the University of Melbourne (BA Hons, 1941) in 1938 and resided at Ormond College. Articled to his uncle Francis Derham, he was admitted to practice as a barrister and solicitor on 3 November 1948; he signed the Bar roll on 5 August 1949. In 1960 Derham wrote of the need for a second law school in Victoria and in 1964 became foundation dean and Sir Owen Dixon professor of law at Monash University. He accepted the invitation to succeed Paton as vice-chancellor of the University of Melbourne, taking up the post in March 1968. Sir David died on 1 September 1985 at home in Toorak, and was buried in Templestowe cemetery.

With the Cribb & Foote covers from Rod's stock, it stands to reason that there should be some postmarked in Ipswich itself:
Image
22nd November 1960 - "Address Mail to Private Boxes it Expedites Delivery.

Image
28th November 1960 - "Use Electricity Safely"

Image
7th March 1961 - "Electricity Care Makes Mishaps Rare".
A few different slogans there, it seems like they changed them regularly. :)

And finally for Ipswich from Rod's stock, this pair:

24th February 1961 - Check Address If Incomplete Advise Writer.

A pair of "Burnie Board & Timber Pty Ltd" of Booval Qld, advertising covers for another business that no longer appears to be around. :(

Booval is a suburb in the City of Ipswich situated between Ipswich & Bundamba. The origin of the suburb name is from the Kabi Aboriginal dialect meaning frilled lizard.
