Nundah Queensland:

Nundah NE3 Qld (with old postal code North East 3)- 26th February 1961.
Nundah (previously called German Station) is an inner suburb in the city of Brisbane, approximately 8 kilometres north-east of the Brisbane CBD. The name "Nundah" means "chain of water holes" in the local Aboriginal dialect. The first permanent European settlement in the area was a mission built in 1838 by German Lutheran missionaries.

The State Savings Bank, another fallen Victorian icon:
Image
Image
Image

Melbourne machine slogan - "Support Lord Mayor's Hospital."
17th October 1960.
The State Bank of Victoria was a bank that existed from 1842 until 1990 when it was taken over by the Commonwealth Bank. It was owned by the State of Victoria.

A government-controlled savings bank had been founded on 1 January 1842 as the Savings Bank of Port Philip. Other independent savings banks merged over time and this development was recognised by legislation in 1912, which reconstituted the bank as the State Savings Bank of Victoria. In 1980 its name was changed to the State Bank of Victoria, the name it had until its sale to the Commonwealth Bank in 1990 and subsequent dissolution.

The State Bank collapsed due to the weight of the grossly irresponsible lending made in the 1980s, in particular by its merchant bank subsidiary Tricontinental, after the Hawke ALP Government's decision to increase interest rates in 1989 brought about the deep recession that put pressure on those financial institutions that were heavily exposed to the property market. Tricontinental eventually collapsed with losses of A$1.5 billion, which threatened the existence of the State Bank and led to its sale to the Commonwealth Bank. The overall sale price was A$2.0 billion.

The collapse of the State Bank was a key factor in the defeat of the State Labor government led by Joan Kirner and the election of the Liberal Party led by Jeff Kennett, at the 1992 Victorian state election.

More from Rod's stock, this time Adelaide with machine slogan - "Help Eradicate TB - Use Christmas Seals" dated 28th October 1960:
Image
Image
Image

The crest on the reverse of the envelope is that of Prince Alfred College, Adelaide.
Motto (Latin) Fac Fortia Et Patere - (Do Brave Deeds and Endure)
Prince Alfred College (also referred to as PAC, Princes, or in sporting circles, The Reds) is a private independent, day and boarding school for boys, located on Dequetteville Terrace, Kent Town – near the centre of Adelaide, South Australia. Prince Alfred College was established in 1869 by the Methodist Church of Australasia, which amalgamated with other Protestant churches in 1977 to form the Uniting Church in Australia.

Prince Alfred College was named after Prince Alfred during his visit to Adelaide in 1867. Prince Alfred was one of the four sons of Queen Victoria and her husband Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. The school has attracted many royal visitors since its foundation, including Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip in 1954.

The founders of PAC were determined that the religious traditions of John Wesley, the founder of Methodism, should be indoctrinated in the school. Young Methodist men of the colony and PAC were encouraged to live disciplined, hard working and predominantly Christian lives, even though they were mocked facing society's temptations.

On Wednesday 18 April 2018, Elizabeth II's son, Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex, visited Prince Alfred College, and participated in an unveiling a stone to commemorate the sesquicentennial of the College.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prince_Alfred_College
What is ironic here is that the Methodist Church led the "Anti-gambling Protestors" claiming this stamp would portray Australia as a country of mad gamblers.

While the stamp went ahead the Post Office tried to appease them somewhat by ensuring there were plentiful supplies of the 5d blue QEII definitive stamp like the one below sent by the Victoria Racing Club (VRC) dated 18th July 1960:
Image
Of course I am still looking for a VRC cover with the 1960 Melbourne Cup stamp. :)

Carborundum Australasia Pty Ltd was deregistered in 1985, but a company with a similar name continued on until this year.

What is Carborundum (or Silicon carbide)? It is a semiconductor containing silicon and carbon. It occurs in nature as the extremely rare mineral moissanite. Synthetic SiC powder has been mass-produced since 1893 for use as an abrasive. Grains of silicon carbide can be bonded together by sintering to form very hard ceramics that are widely used in applications requiring high endurance, such as car brakes, car clutches and ceramic plates in bulletproof vests.

Five Dock machine slogan - "Please Post Early Before Lunch & Before Four O'Clock."
Dated 1st March 1961.
Five Dock is a suburb in the Inner West of Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. Five Dock is located 10 kilometres west of the Sydney central business district, in the local government area of the City of Canada Bay.

The earliest written reference to Five Dock is in The Sydney Gazette of 3 February 1805, which mentions Five Dock Bay. However, the name probably dates back to the days of the First Settlement.[citation needed] All of the sources referenced are in agreement that it was derived from the shape of the bay along the Parramatta River.

According to a publication from the Maritime Services Board, Port of Sydney, (Volume 9, No 3, September 1965), "At the NE point of the bay there were five water worn indentations that were likened to docks, hence the name Five Dock."

Gympie Qld machine slogan - Check Address if Incomplete Advise Writer:
Image
Dated 8th March 1961.
Gympie is a town and a locality in the Gympie Region & located i about 160 kilometres north of Brisbane. The city lies on the Mary River, which floods the town periodically. Gympie is famous for its gold field.

Gympie's name derives from the Kabi (the language of a tribe of Indigenous Australians that historically lived in the region) word gimpi-gimpi (which means "stinging tree"), which referred to Dendrocnide moroides. The tree has large, round leaves that have similar properties to stinging nettles. The town was previously named Nashville, after James Nash, who discovered gold in the area in 1867. The name was later changed to Gympie in 1868.

As motor vehicles became more popular in Australia, Vacuum expanded its operations. In 1924 Vacuum opened its first bulk petroleum products terminal at Pulpit Point in Sydney and took delivery of its first imported bulk oil products cargo, a 1.5 million gallon shipment carried from the United States by the tanker "HT Harper". Lane Cove NSW machine slogan - "Check Address, if Incorrect Advise the Writer".
Image
Dated 14th November, 1960
It would appear there was only one slogan at Lane Cove as it was still there on 3rd February 1961:
Image
Lane Cove is a suburb on the Lower North Shore of Sydney, nine kilometres north-west of the Sydney CBD. Lane Cove occupies a peninsula on the northern side of Port Jackson (Sydney Harbour), at the opening of the Lane Cove River. It is adjacent to the Lower North Shore suburbs of Riverview, Longueville, Willoughby and Artarmon. The regional administrative and shopping hub of Chatswood is located 3 kilometres away. It was also home to former Wesley Cover Service owner Michael Hudson.

There are a number of possibilities of the origin of the name 'Lane Cove'. The first written use of the name was by Lieutenant William Bradley after he had just sailed along the river in 1788. Some have argued that it was named after Lieutenant Michael Lane, a respected cartographer, who had once worked with Captain Cook. Others say that it was in honour of John Lane, who was the son of the London Lord Mayor at the time as well as a good friend of the first Governor, Arthur Phillip.

Image
Image
Another advertising cover from the previously discussed State Savings Bank of Victoria. This one has the Mentone Branch Bank Date stamp on the reverse in violet - 15th October 1960. :)

Mentone is a suburb in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, 21 km south-east of Melbourne's central business district. Its local government area is the City of Kingston. At the 2016 census, Mentone had a population of 12,965.

It is known locally for Mentone Beach, which extends alongside Beaumaris Bay from the cliffs in Beaumaris and ends at Warrigal Road where it meets Parkdale.
Image
Mentone is associated with the Heidelberg School of Australian artists.

Mentone was founded as a resort town named after the Italian spelling of the formerly-Italian French town Menton. In order to keep with the Italian resort theme many streets in Mentone were named after Italian cities for example, Cremona Street, Florence Street, Venice Street and Milan Street. The development of Mentone began in the late 1800s, the Post Office opening on 16 May 1884. :)

Maryborough Victoria machine slogan cancel on Maryborough Knitting Mills (Cuttle) Ltd advertising cover postmarked 28th October 1960:
Image
Image
Image
Image
Image
Image
With the help of stampboarders The Pom & ninhao, we have identified the slogan as:

"Include Postal
District Number
In Melbourne
Suburban
Addresses"

Maryborough is a small town in Victoria, located on the Pyrenees Highway, 58 kilometres north of Ballarat, 168 kilometres north-west of Melbourne, in the Shire of Central Goldfields.

The first Europeans to settle were the Simson brothers, who established a sheep station, known as Charlotte Plains, in 1840. Gold was discovered at White Hill, 4 kilometres north of Maryborough, in 1854, leading to prospectors rushing to the area. At its peak Maryborough is reported to have had a population of up to 50,000 although local historian Betty Osborn, of Maryborough-Midlands Historical Society inc., says it was closer to 30,000.

The town site was surveyed in 1854, with a police camp, Methodist church, and hospital amongst the first infrastructure. The Post Office opened on 19 October 1854.

The settlement was originally known as Simsons, but later changed to Maryborough by the gold commissioner James Daly, after his Irish birthplace.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maryborough,_Victoria
A co-operative butter factory was opened in 1917, the Cuttle knitting mill was persuaded to move from Clunes to Maryborough in 1923 and the Patience and Nicholson tool works moved from Caulfield to Maryborough east in 1924-25. The Maryborough knitting mill, formerly Cuttles, was also the source of town electricity before supply came from Yallourn. Perhaps Stampboarder gmoney can tell us what happened to the knitting mill.

Image
Brisbane Qld Aust - Posted Pillar Box - "Sponsor A British Migrant" - 14th November 1960.

Advertising (Corner Card) Cover of Don Rex Furniture of Rocklea East.

I can't find too much on Don Rex, although there seems to be some of his furniture on eBay. One seller gave a glowing review "A Brisbane based designer and manufacturer from the swinging 60’s and 70’s. Our mate Don is well known for using quality Australian hardwoods, such as Queensland maple, and his furniture is inspired by sweet Danish designs."

It seems Don Rex's furniture out lasted the company as I can see no reference to it on ASIC or the ABR.

Advertising (Corner Card) cover of Patrick Stevedoring Co (Qld) Pty Ltd, who appear to have taken over Queensland Stevedoring Co Pty Ltd.

Patrick Stevedoring Co (Qld) Pty Ltd most likely merged into Patrick Corporation Ltd which was an Australian publicly listed logistics conglomerate. Headed by CEO Chris Corrigan before it was absorbed by Toll Holdings in 2006, Patrick had interests in shipping, rail and aviation, including a 62% shareholding in airline Virgin Blue.

On 24 May 2006, after having had held over 50% of Patrick for the past two weeks and having extended its offer for an additional week after not being able to achieve the required stock to remove Patrick from the ASX, Toll reached 90%. Patrick was absorbed the following day. Patrick had previously been a constituent of the S&P/ASX 200 index. Trade in the remaining shares was suspended on 6 June 2006, and PRK was removed from the official list on 3 July 2006 after completion of compulsory acquisition.

Patrick and Pacific National were demerged from Toll Holdings in 2007 and together became Asciano Limited. :)

However having the best of both worlds did not save Benson after opening in 1946, according to ASIC, they closed 1992.

Advertising (Corner Card) cover of Otis Elevator Company Pty Ltd.

The Otis Elevator Company is an American company that develops, manufactures and markets elevators, escalators, moving walkways and related equipment. A pioneer in its field, Otis is the world's largest manufacturer of vertical transportation systems, principally focusing on elevators, moving walkways and escalators. The company pioneered the development of the "safety elevator", invented by Otis in 1852, which used a special mechanism to lock the elevator car in place should the hoisting ropes fail.

Brisbane Qld Aust - Posted Pillar Box - "Prominent House Numbers Help Everyone" - 7th March 1961.

Berlei Ltd advertising (corner card) cover.

The company began in Sydney in 1910. The Berlei brand originated in 1917. Berlei undergarments are now sold in Australia by Pacific Brands and in the United Kingdom by Courtaulds Textiles.

Berlei conducted a research project to quantify Australian 'figure types'.

The name came from that of the firm's founder, Frederick Richard Burley, who felt that his name as normally spelt was not contextually appropriate to his products.

Berlei Limited was one of the first Australian companies to expand outside Australia. Berlei (New Zealand) Limited was incorporated in 1923 and Berlei (U.K.) Limited was organised in 1930.

Berlei Limited was started in 1910 as a company called Unique Corsets in Sydney, after Fred Burley discovered that the corset business was profitable and that the wholesale segment of the business could be prosecuted on an import replacement basis. Burley made his first overseas business trip to the US in 1913 to research methods and investigate the use of machinery of the time. The 'frenchified' brand name of Berlei was conceptualized soon after and was registered in Australia in 1917. (While this might reasonably be accordingly pronounced after the French style as 'bur-LAY', it is commonly still pronounced as if written 'burley'.) United Corsets became Berlei Limited in 1920.

Fred Burley's vision for the company was "To Design and Manufacture Corsets and Brassieres of such perfect Fit, Quality, and Workmanship, as will bring pleasure and profit to all concerned, while at the same time rendering such excellent service to our Clients and Consumers as will merit their permanent patronage".

Berlei's approach to marketing was professional (although I can't type here the acronym that we school kids made up :D ). However I do recall an advertisement about comfort & stretch.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berlei
To digress a little, I do remember a campfire song from my scouting days called "I ain't gonna grieve my Lord no more". The words revolved around what you couldn't go to heaven in. For example:

"You can't go to Heaven on roller skates,
Because you'd roll right past them Pearly Gates.."

or

"You can't go to Heaven in a fancy car,
Because you can't buy petrol up that far."

but one wag came up with

"You can't go to Heaven in a Berlei Bra,
Because a Berlei Bra won't stretch that far."
