Don Rex Furniture Pty Ltd advertising (corner card) cover. I can't find too much on Don Rex, although there seems to be some of his furniture on eBay. The Brisbane connection is that was the sales office for Queensland and the NT.

If you wanted the steel products from Port Kembla, you ordered and paid thru Brisbane.

By their nature, the sizes and steel strength required necessitated specific rolling dimensions thru the mills. Very little output from Port Kembla was rolled without a specific order.

An order usually took 12 weeks.

Perhaps Dunning & Downs, Brad?

Seeing my old covers enjoying their 15 minutes of fame is, well, interesting.

The next shoebox heading to a PO box in Cheltenham will feed this thread for months.

If anyone is inspired to do a cover study of a Letter rate stamp of Australia (c1930-2000), I'm probably your man.

As Brad's enthusiasm suggests, it's fun, and surprisingly inexpensive.

BRISBANE POSTED IN COUNTRY BOX.
In 1960/61 Brisbane and suburbs were still using locality codes. ie NW1.
Outside that area would be considered country Queensland.

Thank you towradji on that extra information on Australian Iron & Steel. Perhaps they were furnishing their offices through Cribb & Foote.

Thank you Rod for the Dunnings & Downs suggestion, I will try a search on that one later. I have found plenty of "Ups & Downs" with these old businesses.

L@@king forward to the next batch.

Thank you Terry.

I guess similar to Melbourne with the suburb of Frankston. Being outside the 50 km radius of the Melbourne GPO, Frankston residents received "country registration" for their cars, that continuing on to the 1990's when someone decided it was no longer country. Gould Street which backed right on to the beach was for the holiday houses of the rich, while their poorer cousins headed to the caravan park on the foreshore particularly at Christmas.

Neil Fuller & Sons Pty Ltd advertising (corner card) cover & are now known as Riviana Foods. Riviana Foods is one of the country's leading and most successful food importers and is proudly Australian owned. They are part of the SunRice group of companies. With a uniquely diverse business, they manufacture, distribute and market a number of highly regarded brands across the retail grocery and food service sectors nationally.

Collectively, these brands boast a portfolio of over 500 products across multiple food categories including:

Rice
Olives, Antipasto & Traditional Pickled Vegetables
Olive Oil & Vinegar
Condiments & Sauces
Savoury & Sweet Biscuits
Fruit – Canned, Pouch, Frozen, Dried
Vegetable – Canned, Pouch, Frozen
Seafood – Canned, Pouch
Portion Control Desserts
Pasta & Noodles

The story begins in Wellington, New Zealand during the 1940's when they were founded as Neil Fuller & Sons. During the 1950's the business moved to Australia then in the early 1960's extended its business to include rice in Queensland. In the early 1970's, Neil Fuller & Sons was taken over by Riviana USA and then in later years was acquired by Colgate Palmolive.

During the early 1980's, the New Zealand Dairy Board acquired 50% of the equity of Riviana Foods Australia from Colgate Palmolive with full ownership being secured in 1986. In 1993, the New Zealand Dairy Board divested Riviana Foods Australia to Rice Growers Limited who currently remains the sole owner.

Today they are now a unique, dynamic and diversified food business that has a number of highly regarded brands within the retail grocery business including Always Fresh, Riviana, Fehlbergs, Admiral and Mahatma and the food service business with Riviana, Menu Master, Ocean Supreme, Garden Supreme, Regal Sea, 4 Seasons & Tastic."

https://www.rivianafoods.com.au/about-us
For the best part of the last 30 years I looked after the books of a competitor of Riviana Foods. For privacy purposes we will call him "The Gherkin Man". He was always trying to stay one step ahead of Riviana. He made a fortune selling what people didn't want in their hamburgers. :D

Adamstown is a suburb of Newcastle, located 6 kilometres west of Newcastle's CBD. It has a railway station, that opened in 1887 with the Newcastle–Gosford section of the Main North line. Manifold Heights is a residential suburb of Geelong. The Post Office opened here on 25 March 1929, but has always been known as just Manifold.

Another recent eBay acquisition but this time on WCS, the earlier one being a Royal. :)

Another recent eBay acquisition returning from England:

Brunswick, Victoria & paying the correct 2/3d airmail rate.
Brunswick is an inner-city suburb of Melbourne, 4 kilometres north of Melbourne's CBD. Traditionally a working class area it is noted for its large Italian and Greek communities. Brunswick's major thoroughfare is Sydney Road, one of Melbourne's major commercial and nightlife strips.

Brunswick takes its name from George IV and the city of Brunswick, Germany, which laid within his ancestral Kingdom of Hanover. It is bordered to the south by the suburbs of Princes Hill and Parkville, to the east by Brunswick East, to the north by Coburg and to the west by Brunswick West. :)

Ormond Vic on Australian Post Office generic Hermes fdc in blue & gold
Ormond is a suburb in Melbourne, Australia, 12 km south-east from Melbourne's CBD. An Ormond Post Office opened on 1 January 1870 and closed in 1884. It reopened in 1907.

In 1905, Abraham Lewis begun operations of a timber mill in the then market garden estates of Ormond (formerly East Brighton) as the surrounding subdivision began to grow. Furthermore, in the early 1930-40's the Lewis family purchased a larger piece of land neighbouring market gardens on the corner of Jasper Road and Jasper Street. At this site, A. Lewis & Company PTY LTD was built and continues to this day in the same family ownership and operations. Although when I walked past recently, I had the impression the business may have closed.

In the mid 1900s the council changed the street name to Lewis Street to avoid confusion between the main road and side street being both named Jasper as those in the area simply referred to the street as "the one Lewis's is on".

The Ormond shopping strip is located primarily on North Road, and has declined since its heyday in the middle of last century. North Road was the north boundary of Henry Dendy's Brighton land grant.

A long time ago I acquired this generic Royal fdc postmarked Woolgoolga NSW:
Image
Image
Woolgoolga being a town on the Mid North Coast of New South Wales, on the Pacific Highway, approximately 550 km north of Sydney and 365 km south of Brisbane. The closest city to Woolgoolga is Coffs Harbour, which lies 25.8 km to the south. PPA says the Post Office opened here on September 1, 1884.

I had not seen another Woolgoolga (anything) until yesteday at Stampboarder Michael Eastick's Shop in Forest Hills:

This one being a WCS addressed in the same hand as the previous Royal & also back stamped "Woolgoolga Central School", which appears to no longer exist. :)

towradji sent me some 1960 Melbourne Cups on piece which he acquired from a Brighton Philatelic Society auction:

Box Hill E11 Vic Aust with time - 2nd November 1960.
It is quite different to this one on a Royal fdc:

Box Hill Vic Aust - no time.
And quite different too on this uncacheted fdc:

Box Hill E11 Vic Aust - no time.
Box Hill seem to have a few different postmarks in simultaneous use.

From "The Post Offices And Hand-Held Datestamps of Victoria" Volume One by Gary Watson, John Webster & David Wood.

Box Hill Victoria 14km East of GPO, opened as Post Office 1st February 1861.

As alluded to in the previous post there were a lot of hand-held date stamps in use at Box Hill on 12th October 1960:

60A BOX HILL VIC-AUST large date line (LDL) earliest recorded use (ERU) 2/7/41 latest recorded use (LRU) 1957. The middle shown example in the post above & 3 years after the LRU & rated S.

80A BOX HILL E.11 VIC-AUST LDL ERU 6/7/47 LRU 18/6/64. This is the bottom example in the post above & rated RR.

90A BOX HILL E.11 VIC-AUST LDL ERU 28/7/47 LRU 20/9/61. This is not shown above & rated RRR.

110A BOX HILL E.11 VIC-AUST with Time (T) LDL ERU 24/11/56 LRU 13/7/64. This is the top example on piece shown above & is rated C.

120B BOX HILL E.11 VIC -AUST with small dateline (SDL) ERU 11/5/60 LRU 30/11/63 & not shown above, rated RR.

130A BOX HILL E.11 VIC -AUST SDL ERU 17/3/60 LRU 6/2/68 & not shown above, RR.

C = Common, S = Scarce, R = 13 to 24 copies, RR = 7 to 12 copies, RRR = 4 to 6 copies & RRRR = 1 to 3 copies. :)

PS I note that a "First Day of Issue" postmark was not introduced at Box Hill until 31st August 1970.

From "The Post Offices And Hand-Held Datestamps of Victoria" Volume Two by Gary Watson, John Webster & David Wood.

Camperdown is 106 kms west of Geelong & it, like Box Hill had a few hand held date stamps in use on 12th October 1960. It was renamed from Timboon on 1st January 1854:

140A VIC-AUST LDL with T ERU 10/12/45 LRU 23/5/68 & I believe this is the one shown above & rated C.
150A VIC-AUST LDL ERU 12/47 LRU 12/4/50 rated RRR
150B VIC-AUST SDL ERU 6/5/71 rated RRRR
So 150A became 150B upon change of dateline sometime between 1950 & 1971 but most likely sometime around 1960.
160A VIC-AUST LDL ERU 20/8/55 LRU 6/4/59 rated RRR
160B VIC-AUST LDL ERU 13/1/61 LRU 22/6/88 rated C
So 160A became 160B upon change of dateline sometime between 6/4/59 & 13/1/61 C
170 VIC-AUST SDL ERU 8/7/60 LRU 22/6/88 C
180 VIC-AUST SDL ERU 3/7/62 LRU 22/6/88 C
It is possible that 180 came into use at the same time as 170 but a 1960 usage has not been recorded.

A first day of issue postmark was introduced at Camperdown on 18th April 1972.

From "The Post Offices And Hand-Held Datestamps of Victoria" Volume Two by Gary Watson, John Webster & David Wood.

City Road (South Melbourne) SC5 is one & a half kms south west of the GPO. It opened as a RH on 28/8/1892 & was reclassified as a PO about 1902. It would appear around June 1960 it's postal code was altered from SC4 to SC5.

Like the previous it had several hand held date stamps in use:

70A VIC-AUST SDL with T ERU 28/6/60 LRU 21/4/66, rated C. This is the example shown above as the hyphen between C-A is 2mm long.
80A VIC-AUST SDL with T ERU 11/10/60 LRU 6/2/68 - hyphen C-A 2.5mm long & rated C
90A VIC-AUST SDL ERU 26/10/60 LRU 6/2/68, rated R.

First day of Issue postmark introduced on 17th February 1982.
