Hi Brad,

I did find another seller with a few, but you had them all, I should have bought the Port Pirie cover for you, to thank you for the 2 you got me, I just wasn't sure if it was one you didn't have, because your list was updated some time ago.
Next one I find that you haven't got, let me know, and I will get it for you.

Hi Brad,

The same guy, I got 17 covers of mine that I'm collecting last week from him. All over the place, all in good condition, he seems to have a good selection of a lot of different covers. Nothing was to much trouble for him, told me in a day or two at the most. I'm still waiting on other people well before, I asked him, some people have not even responded.

Hi Brad,

Have a few 1978 Horse Racing fdc which after checking against your 2019 list found a couple Broken Hill, Forster, Hamilton NSW ( addressed) and Morphettvale that were not on it but you may have since picked up.
Please advise if you would like any of these.

Of the four you list, I don't have Broken Hill, Forster & Hamilton, NSW.

What would you like for these?

Hi Brad,

Pleased to be able add to your extensive collection of pmks for this issue and would like to fill a few holes in my collection also.
I noticed on your horse racing thread a WCS horse racing fdc that a cover postmarked at Claremont that Scrute provided to fill a hole in your WCS collection, I have a limited number of WCS covers from the earlier pre decimal days through to the 1970's including two for the 1978 horse racing set one posted in Sydney which is unaddressed the other which is typed addressed posted in Adelaide, I would like to swap either of these for your Claremont one or for one of the above pmks.
Otherwise I have holes to fill in my ACSC varieties on stamps decimal and predecimal on fdc collections that need to be filled.

Kind regards
2021

Thanks to the heads up form Desmond Maughan, I was able to obtain this one from Dimboola, Victoria:

Aust fdc 1978 - Horse Racing Port Pirie 1.jpg

And inside:

Australia fdc for the 1978 Race Horses postmarked Port Pirie SA fdi postmark - 18th October 1978.
Australia fdc for the 1978 Race Horses postmarked Port Pirie SA fdi postmark - 18th October 1978.

Port Pirie is a city and seaport on the east coast of the Spencer Gulf in South Australia, 223 km north of Adelaide. The settlement was founded in 1845 and at June 2018 had an estimated urban population of 14,188. Port Pirie is the eighth most populous city in South Australia after Adelaide, Mount Gambier, Gawler, Mount Barker, Whyalla, Murray Bridge, and Port Lincoln.

The first European to see the location was Matthew Flinders in 1802 as he explored the Spencer Gulf by boat. The first land discovery of the location by a European was by the explorer Edward Eyre, who explored regions around Port Augusta about 90kms to the north

The town was originally called Samuel's Creek after the discovery of Muddy Creek by Samuel Germein. In 1846, Port Pirie Creek was named by Governor Robe after the John Pirie, the first vessel to navigate the creek.

The city's economy is dominated by one of the world's largest lead smelters. This came about with the discovery of rich ore bearing silver, lead and zinc at Broken Hill in 1883, and the completion of a narrow gauge railway from Port Pirie to the Broken Hill field in 1888.

Phoenix tells us the Post office opened here around 1873.

Among a "lot" of cover I purchased recently at a Brighton Philatelic Society auction was this one postmarked Cowra NSW:

1978 Horse Racing postmarked Cowra NSW fdi - 18th October 1978.
1978 Horse Racing postmarked Cowra NSW fdi - 18th October 1978.

Cowra is a small town in the Central West region of New South Wales. It is the largest population centre and the council seat for the Cowra Shire, with a population of 9,863.

Cowra is located approximately 310 m above sea level, on the banks of the Lachlan River, in the Lachlan Valley. By road it is approximately 310 km south-west of the state capital, Sydney, and 189 km north of the nation's capital, Canberra. The town is situated at the intersection of three state highways: the Mid-Western Highway, Olympic Highway, and the Lachlan Valley Way.

The first European explorer to the area, George William Evans, entered the Lachlan Valley in 1815. He named the area the Oxley Plains after his superior the surveyor-general, John Oxley. In 1817 he deemed the area "rather unfit for settlement". A military depot was established not long after at Soldiers Flat near present-day Billimari. Arthur Ranken and James Sloan, from Bathurst, were amongst the first white settlers on the Lachlan. They moved to the area in 1831.

The township of "Coura Rocks" had its beginnings in 1844. Around 1847, the township site became known as Cowra, and in 1849, was proclaimed a village. Phoenix tells us the post office opened on the first of January 1850.

During World War II, Cowra was the site of a prisoner of war (POW) camp. Most of the detainees were captured Japanese and Italian military personnel. However, in July 1942, Indonesian political prisoners from the Dutch Tanahmerah prison on the Digul river, in West Papua, were transported as "prisoners-of-war" to the Cowra prison camp, at the behest of Netherlands East Indies government in exile (with others who were ill being sent to Liverpool).

On 5 August 1944, at least 545 Japanese POWs attempted a mass breakout from the camp. Simultaneously, other Japanese prisoners committed suicide, or were killed by their countrymen, inside the camp.

The actions of the POWs in storming machine gun posts, armed only with improvised weapons, showed what Prime Minister John Curtin described as a "suicidal disregard of life".[citation needed]

During the breakout and subsequent recapture of POWs, four Australian guards and 231 Japanese died, and 108 prisoners were wounded. The dead Japanese were buried in Cowra in the specially created Japanese War Cemetery. This is the only such cemetery in Australia, and also holds some of the dead from the World War II air raids on Darwin.

Hi Desmond

Don't sell yourself short, you seem to have picked up a lot of SJ fdcs in a short time where as I have been collecting these for 20 years or more,

I have a list of post offices of around 500 & have about 200 to go. It is a slow process & as they say slow & steady wins the race.

Don't forget you also have the whole world l@@king for you now through Stampboards. Some of mine have come from the UK, the USA & EUrope.

Posting the images of your new acquisitions will keep your collecting of these covers in the spotlight.

Hi Brad,

It doesn't help when you send out about 100 emails, asking people if they have anything and about 2/3 of the people can't even be bothered sending you at least a reply.
Another example, on eBay Aus, I found two over 4 months ago, I asked the seller if he had anything further, he went away looking for nearly two months. He says he has had problems with his ebay account, he has managed to relist them. I've had a major problem trying to find them, I eventually found them, and was in such a rush, I didn't ask to combine P&P, most do it automatically on checkout. I dropped him an message about it, then received what sounded a complaining message about it.
I have found them all over the world on eBay, UK, US, and even Thailand, but mainly Australia, none in Europe.

Hi Desmond

This cover was received today from a PO Box in Forest Hill Vic, which I think belongs to the Australian Stamp & Coin Company in Forest Hill Chase Shopping Centre, & run by Tom Jenkins.

Aust fdc 1978 - Race Horse - Latrobe Street 1.jpg

I dont know what happened to the cover but it had been opened & then resealed with post office packing tape, front & back, which wiped out every stamp on the cover.

However these were inside safe & sound:

1978 Racehorses - Latrobe Street (Melbourne)
1978 Racehorses - Latrobe Street (Melbourne)

1978 Racehorses - Lismore NSW
1978 Racehorses - Lismore NSW
So that explains why he had no SJ fdcs & no 1978 race horses for me.

Thank you for your help with these. :D

I have had for sometime this pair of Adelaide SA 5000 fdcs:

Adelaide SA 5000 fdi postmark (27 mm diameter) - 18th October 1978

A gift from Stampboarder towradji:

1978 Horse Racing fdc postmarked Oakleigh fdi - 18th October 1978
1978 Horse Racing fdc postmarked Oakleigh fdi - 18th October 1978

Oakleigh is a suburb of Melbourne, Victoria, 14 km south-east of Melbourne's central business district. Its local government area is the City of Monash. At the 2016 Census, Oakleigh had a population of 7,893.

Once a large independent city, Oakleigh was absorbed into Melbourne as part of the eastward expansion of the metropolis in the 1950s. As a result, it once had its own large historic Central Business District, its own municipality in the former City of Oakleigh and its own suburbs.

The area is traditionally known to have a strong Greek cultural influence, largely due to the influx of said immigrants to Australia in the mid-20th century. Fourteen per cent of those living in the suburb speak only Greek at home.

Although the origin of the name of the suburb, "Oakleigh," is unclear, local historians have three main theories – that it was derived from she-oaks that grew near Scotchmans Creek; from "Oakleigh Park" an estate near Malvern Hills in England; or from Mrs. Oakley an early settler.

The Oakleigh Post Office opened on 1 August 1854.

Oakleigh, along with Dandenong, soon became one of the closest large cities to Melbourne, and the key to its development was the railway line to Melbourne. Railway workshops, brick works (until 1953, the area supplied 20% of Melbourne's bricks), sand mining, and market gardens became the most important industries in Oakleigh at the end of the 19th century.

Oakleigh was one end of the Outer Circle Railway line. The Outer Circle was built in 1891 as a steam-era suburban railway line, in Melbourne, Victoria. It covered much of the modern City of Boroondara, including the suburbs of (from north to south) Kew East, Camberwell, Burwood, Ashburton, and Malvern East. At its longest stage, it ran from Fairfield station, on what is today the Hurstbridge line, to Oakleigh station, on the current Pakenham and Cranbourne lines

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oakleigh,_Victoria

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Outer_Circle_railway_line

Bet the Government of today wish the Outer Circle Railway line was still in existence.

Sydney University arrived today from Stampboarder "earlierthebetter":

Australian Horse Racing fdc postmarked Sydney University NSW fdi - 18th October 1978
Australian Horse Racing fdc postmarked Sydney University NSW fdi - 18th October 1978

The University of Sydney (USYD, or informally Sydney Uni) is an Australian public research university in Sydney, Australia. Founded in 1850, it is Australia's first university and is regarded as one of the world's leading universities. The university is known as one of Australia's six sandstone universities. Its campus, spreading across the inner-city suburbs of Camperdown and Darlington, is ranked in the top 10 of the world's most beautiful universities by the British Daily Telegraph and the American Huffington Post. The university comprises eight academic faculties and university schools, through which it offers bachelor, master and doctoral degrees.

Phoenix tells us that the post office opened here on 1st July 1926.

HI Brad,

Further to my short want list a badly rusted wide world postman generic fdc with both strips of the produce food set has turned up on ebay, so there must be some around, was wondering if you had any luck with the others.

Kind regards

Sorry Cover2021 I haven't had a chance to mount a search due to end of financial year:

I am not sure these will be easier to find than your earlier want list but I'll check the boxes out the back, you never know your luck. :D

I was shredding an old box of files tonight & found this envelope:

Aust fdc 1978 - Racehorses Mackay 1.jpg

And inside:

1978 Australian Horse Racing fdc postmarked Mackay Qld fdi - 18th October 1978

Yikes, it had been forgotten in there for 18 years :!:

Hi Brad,

Sorry to hear about old mother Hubbard it seems that our swap is going no where so rather than have things drag on I will send you the ten covers of mine that you would like to add to your collection, and in return would appreciate the WCS 1978 horse set postmarked Claremont and the 1960 Challis Melbourne Cup fdc addressed to Mr. Warwick.
Please advise if you are happy with this.
Kind regards

Hi BigSaint,

I'm still waiting to get two covers for you which you don't have, I have just been told of the 3 following 1977 Aust Racehorse FDC FDI, but I think you have them, they are quiet expensive mind:-
Balwyn North
Melbourne
Newport
1978 Aust Horseracing Covers
1978 Aust Horseracing Covers

Hi Cover2021

Sorry I can't swap the Challis fdc away.

I am preparing an exhibit for my 1960 Melbourne Cup covers & I need it for that exhibit. I haven't seen another of these on the market in some time so I think it will be too hard for me to replace in a short time.

I am still looking for the other items you have suggested. :)

Hi Brad,
Thank you for the update, don't know if any of the six 1960 Melbourne Cup fdc's that I have put aside for you would be of any use in your exhibit perhaps you could let me know.
Currently I am also putting material together for several different exhibits which is why I have perhaps been a little too specific, however, we been through that and perhaps it would be easier if you had one or two fdc's with stamps with catalogued varieties on either decimal or pre decimal available to swap.

Kind regards

Hi Cover2021

Can you give me some hints here, as I have over 100 large fdc albums to look through & this could take time.

Hi Brad

I’ve found one of these covers with Engadine NSW cds.

I expect you will already have this one but thought I’d ask anyway.
Cheers
